dkAlien: Covenant ForumThe first robot recognized as a citizen. Dawn of The Second Renaissance?

From another article. Still seems AI is making progress:

Sophia needs an internet connection and is connected to a real human operating a laptop, and the questions she answered were chosen ahead of time.

Software brain aside, Sophia also lacks legs, making her a lot less mobile than her human counterparts

The current model of Sophia is the 13th incarnation of Hanson Robotics' software-powered robot and will visit Sydney, Melbourne and Perth, The Australian reported.

Chief scientist Dr Ben Goertzel is using Sophia as part of SingularityNET's push for a new online space for the exchange of AI algorithms.

'Her intelligence will be plugged into the platform for the benefit of other developers, particularly those looking to make robots as smart as Sophia,' he said.

I prefer Faris. Seimetz did a great job. Her performance was memorable. I don't like Daniels at all, mostly because Waterston's acting.

Daniels- a very tough character and obviously was given a bigger role and more development.

Rosenthal had a lot of potential but had very little development or screen time.

Scrolls yeah there were a few scripts.

Gibson's script here was the one of the original full scripts developed.

The script with monks was Vincent Wards version, the last full script done for Alien 3. Fincher who took over as director didn't like it but they had set pieces made so he changed monks to prisoners, and a wooden space orbital to a smelting-prison.

He then cobbled together the final Alien 3 script literally on the fly as they filmed. Hectic!

Daniels.

She watched a loved one burn alive(That would have ended my monster hunting career right there..Watching anyone burn up like that...They would have taken me away on a stretcher and I would never get in a sleep coffin again!)

Plus she killed 2 Xeno's. Looks good on the resume'.

MowTinAlien: Covenant Forum"Entry of the Gods Into Valhalla"

A synopsis of that scene in the opera:

"At last, the gods prepare to enter their new home. Donner summons a thunderstorm to clear the air. After the storm has ended, Froh creates a rainbow bridge that stretches to the gate of the castle. Wotan leads them across the bridge to the castle, which he names Valhalla. Fricka asks him about the name, and he replies enigmatically that its meaning will become clear when his plans come to fruition.

Loge, who knows that the end of the gods is coming, does not follow the others into Valhalla; he tells the audience that he is tempted to destroy the gods and all they have deceitfully acquired. Far below, the Rhine maidens mourn the loss of their gold and proclaim that the glory of the gods is only an illusion."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Rheingold#Scene_4

In the Opera Loge predicts the end of the gods because they are corrupt and flawed. Loge is Loki the trickster Norse god. Loki and Satan are very similar. I think it makes more sense to see David as Loge than Alberich because it fits more closely with the Paradise Lost analogy of Satan and Xenomorphs as demons.

So here David is predicting the end of the gods as he plots to destroy them through the demons he is creating.

He ties together Christian and Norse mythology beautifully.

I guess I prefer Daniels... Only because she had literally had more time non screen. They create as as strong a character as possible, but I enjoyed it, as well as Waterston's performance. I do agree that Seimetz (Faris)did a great job when she had the time. This topic reminds me how great the cast really was. Only a few characters were given a chance, but I feel like everyone was doing a great job portraying them.

@ Ati - WOW!  Great find!  Alien III could have been so much better than what we got with Alien 3.  I guess the hardest part would have been the limited CGI available in 1987?

I don't think his faith played any part in him checking out the Ovomorph.  When you think about it, if you're already in a room with another person and the eggs, whose first thought would be that something is going to jump out super fast and latch onto your face?  These characters haven't seen the other Alien movies, and I doubt anyone would think about David not being attacked because he's machine.  No creatures we encounter on earth would differentiate between a real person and a machine that looks, moves, and sounds exactly like a real person.

The premise sounds way more exciting than A3, but sounds kind of campy.  For some reason I imagined John Carpenter kind of gore when I read the part about the New Beast emerging from a screaming person being torn to pieces lol.  But sounds like it would make a really good comic with that kind of imagery.

On Daniels killing David:

I think it would be much better if she beheaded him and threw him in a sack.  Maybe use it as a basketball.(David likes basketball)

Karin and Rosenthal were good too, I actually liked all the characters who went down on the planet. Not sure yet about Ricks and Upworth.

Agree, Faris was a nervous wreck when she saw things were getting out of control, but she acted like everyone facing an unknown highly aggressive threat. She was overwhelmed,  hesitant, asking for help and fighting back when understood she had to help herself. Her character could not replace Daniels but her acting was extremely believable.

Those scenes with Faris running back and forth unable to decide and asking for help were more intense than both scenes of Daniels fighting the Protomorphs.

Faris was an interesting character. As the pilot she was resourceful, decisive, adaptable and highly skilled. But she totally out of her league when the bullets started firing (which admittedly she was not paid to deal with). Like Lambert in Alien, she totally fell apart when faced with the horror's, pace and brutality of a 'morph encounter.

Personally I liked Rosenthal character, though mostly from the Origins novel. The film barely gave a glimpse of the cool-headed, ever alert and fiercely loyal final member of the Covenant crew.

Much like Lope for that matter. Great character's over-shadowed in the film.

I liked Carmen Ejogo as Karin, even though her character was very underdeveloped.

SuperAlienAlien: Covenant ForumHow might the mini facehugger be used?

ali81 the alien universe is shrouded in mystery and it will remain this way. The ambiguity  of RS left the door open for every possible interpretation. And for endless passionate debates around the movies.

I feel like these movies are made for the fans primarily rather than for the general audience and easy money.

dkAlien: Covenant ForumDaniels as a leading character

ali81 Fair enough. I perceived Daniels as a character who was tough as nails yet had vulnerability and I admired that. Unfortunately, the character development/possibilities were over shadowed by David.

ali81Alien: Covenant ForumHow might the mini facehugger be used?

all depends on if the book is a legitimate way of answering questions not answered in the movie or not. if the novelisation is regarded as complete canon or not. if RS would come out and say 'yes, the novel explains where the eggs came from. david arrived and found an egg' then we could take the novel as a 'fill in the gaps' novel. but its not clear how much of the book is indeed fact especially as some things in the book don't line up 100% with the movie

plus not everyone who has seen the movie will have read the book so theyr still left with unanswered questions. for me, the movie must answer the questions and they need to stop using other mediums to fill in blanks just so those involved can reference it to answer questions they cant actually answer themselves. just more and more things that can harm peoples opinions of AC.

iraptus totally agree with u on Theron, she would have made for a better Daniels imo

dk, have to disagree with u bud. Daniels was nothing like Ripley and I think she was written deliberately to be different so to limit the amount of obvious comparisons between the 2 characters. ripey had character, something about her that jumped off the screen. u wanted her to make it off the ship or kill the xeno. daniels couldv died and it would have had no effect on the film. she was poorly written and not well portayed imo.

It seems some of those ideas from Alien III showed up in AC in some obvious ways to me. I did not click on all the links, but I know that A3 was very problematic with story and script and stuff being written during filming. The information provided here is both interesting and strange. I am happy with how things worked out. Pretty mind blowing info Ati- thanks!

On second thought, good riddance that Oram died. It was a good demonstration that faith is not fact. Placing trust in faith over facts proved fatal. Good. "That flower smells like a rotting carcass- something the primitive part of my brain tells me to stay away from. No, I have to examine this rotting smell. Oh yes, this is sti-"

I liked Oram on a level because he seemed to really care, but he became careless and should have listened to Daniels.

William Ford Gibson (born March 17, 1948) is an American-Canadian speculative fiction writer and essayist widely credited with pioneering the science fiction subgenre known as cyberpunk. Beginning his writing career in the late 1970s, his early works were noir, near-future stories that explored the effects of technology, cybernetics, and computer networks on humans—a "combination of lowlife and high tech"[18]—and helped to create an iconography for the information age before the ubiquity of the Internet in the 1990s.[19] Gibson notably coined the term "cyberspace" in his short story "Burning Chrome" (1982) and later popularized the concept in his acclaimed debut novel Neuromancer (1984). These early works have been credited with "renovating" science fiction literature after it had fallen largely into insignificance in the 1970s.
