Off the beaten path scifi movies

What are your top 5 or 10 scifi movies you like that may not be well known? I am trying to get ideas since I have fallen way behind in movie watching. For instance, BigDave and ninXeno426 recommended Ex Machina and I watched and enjoyed it. I can only think of three at the moment but feel free to list your favourites.

1. Equilibrium

2. THX 1138 (early Lucas pre Star Wars)

3. Overdrawn at the Memory Bank MST3K edition (funny riffage and not a terrible movie on its own)

Bicentennial Man was pretty good. It really went into what it is to be human etc sort of like discussions we have had about David 8.

Thanks ninXeno426.

I think it quite frightening because the technology appears to be almost within our grasp.

Today I have been dedicated to post on as many topics as possible until I pass out from drinking too many beers.

"I totally forgot to do Children of Men,that's one of my all time favorites and still better than Gravity which I like."

@ninXeno426, I think same director did both!

@dk, yeah I think The Running Man was and still is underrated. They rebooted Total Recall, but if ever there was a movie ripe for remake, it's The Running Man.

Speaking of Total Recall, if we're accepting Minority Report as unsung then you've got to include it also. Not to mention, Stargate.

Yes both Alphonso Cuaron @Stan Winston. Both great films,Gravity is more popular but Children of Men is better.I second Stargate,it's a tad underrated and overshadowed by the SG-1 tv series(which I like)

Naval ships is a great setting for sci-fi horror films (and games). I recommend the following:  (if you haven't seen them already)

Virus (1999) - A pretty dark film about a hostile alien energy that hits the computer system of a large research ship, and then begins controlling the onboard industrial robots that start building these crude machines that turn against the crew and harvest their bodies to form a cybernetic race.

Think The Borg from Star Trek but much more violent and nasty with lots of gore and great special effects (both practical and CGI.) The Strogg from Quake is an even better example.

Deep Rising (1998) - the more lighthearted choice here both in terms of the ship (Virus takes place on a spooky research vessel while Deep Rising takes place on a luxury cruise ship) and the overall tone, which is a bit more ridiculous and exaggerated here with a tiny ounce of humor, but it's nonetheless a good film that I recommend.

It's about giant serpent-like creatures (not going to spoil the truth here :) attacking the ship and killing everyone.

What these two films have in common are the fantastic visual effects for its time.
