centrospherePrometheus ForumEvidence of "Bio-Mechanoid" within AlienFeb 9, 2012
"@centrosphere...why would you want to eradicate the one term that universally defines the artistic vision of H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott as it refers to the derelict, the Sj and the xeno in 'Alien'? It's the essence of the thing...the fundamental definition of what 'Alien' is."
As I said before _ in the thread about interestellar scenes _ my personal sense of esthetics asks for some degree of realism. That´s why I´m pursuing a more rigorous definition of "bio-mechanical". To me, "bio-mechanical" is a term that or defines some kind of "cyborg", a mix of biology (self-organing matter) and hardware (some sort of assembly), or is a tautological term. As the xenomorph clearly isn´t a cyborg, to me it´s only an organism, albeit a very singular one.
Besides, I would dispute what is the "essence of the thing" here. You must remember that a movie is a complex, collective product. The original O´Bannon idea for the movie, that I would consider as the "core" of Alien properly, is silent about the nature of the xenomorph. Actually, he was inspired by the behaviour of some species of wasps that put their eggs inside living beens.
Also, Giger is not a science person, he is an artist. His influences are from Salvador Dali and Ernst Fuchs _ look at this:

Artistic freedom can, and must, go wherever it wants to. But if we are talking sci-fi here, and not fantasy, then we should ask what kind of being the xeno is. I think the internal coherence of the "Alien" universe, where Scott brought to sci-fi the realities of an industrial society ("truck drivers in space", etc.), deserves that we develops a science-based understanding of the xeno.
Of course, some persons will like this approach, some will not. As ArchEtech just said, every approach can be accused of "reading too much" into the movie. I can see that my initial proposal _ erradicate the term "biomechanical" _ is heretic to many "Alien" fans that love Giger work. BTW, I love Giger art also, and my take here is not geared to denigrate his work; I´m just asking for scientific coherence in a science-based setting for the "Alien" saga. Peace!

Just for the record: when I say that the xeno is "only an organism", it´s not depreciative. On the contrary, to me biological organisms ARE wonderful machines, and our beloved xeno shines in this pantheon.

Thanks Craigamore. I thought there was another reference to the xenos being silicon-based, but... I may have dreamed it?

I undrestand you're points @centrosphere, I do, but we'll just have to agree to disagree.
As to your O'Bannon comment, let's not forget that Giger's work was the Yin to the biological Yang, you mentioned, as inspiration for his script. Not only was it a instrumental in guiding O'bannon's imagination to begin with, he's the one who showed Ridley Giger's work and made the point of saying, in so many words, this is where we must go with this.
I'm sorry if my response to you was strong, but I was getting at a point.......that Giger's work played an irreplaceable formative role in the writing, conception and direction of 'Alien'. So when the artist calls his own work 'Bio-mechanical Art', it's not a term you can just throw away, because you're not fond of it.
As to my interpretation 'bio-mechanical', it is my own critical reading, but I come at it that way, because if we simplify what this xeno is, what bio-mechanical is, in terms we can so easily understand, such as cyborg tech, because that terminology is recognizable, it then becomes too familiar, less alien and less frightening. At that point, why even watch? Why bother? All of the fun is in that tantilizingly disturbing mystery. I imagine it as something entirely new, because it's clearly meant to be....the exact details may be different....but that's beside the point.
You want to understand it becuase you need to rationalize it in "scientific" terms. As you yourself said, "we are talking sci-fi here". Science Fiction exists to allow for what we cannot explain or understand and yet imagine, wonder at and enjoy......maybe you're not meant to know, understand or comprehend....maybe that's the point.....

I think that Shaw was sent on the mission with "secretive" aims provided by Weyland, but once they make contact with these SJ's then she realises that what she thought she knew about the mission etc was dead wrong. . .
ReplyPrometheusForTheWinPrometheus ForumTrailer IntroductionFeb 9, 2012
I agree. She probably thought it was just a mission to investigate an uninhabited planet, but found out something was there that tests her faith and she sees many people killed. Her original theory was wrong, and she had no idea what she was in for...

I think, as far as Prometheus goes, I'd definitely be taking the blue pill. Keep me in cryosleep, and just don't ever wake me up!

@ The High Priest
Their is an abundance of threads dealing with speculation and mystery on the derelict ship, space jokey and/or engineer origins...ampule rooms...eggs...and the entire Prometheus plot in general....this is not one of those threads however...it's maybe less formal ....but it's nice fresh and entertaining....(for a change)...u my friend need to chill...or go and engage in your active sexlife!

True....lol.....u know their is nothing wrong with all the geeky speculation....but it's been done to death....I mean based on what we got from the trailers and interviews...their is no rock left unturned....so it's getting a bit stale....and I mean no offense to anyone out their that starts another one of those often tiring threads....but then why can't we just have a nice casual thread here and their as well.....the discussing was about who u gonna take to see Prometheus with and how u think they might react to the whole experience.....what's so fucking odd about that?

Gonna take the hubby. I have already desensitized him over the last few years with descriptions of my somewhat regular, twisted aliens-chasing-me dreams and endless diatribes over the brilliance of Alien, the unnecessary changes to xeno head features in Aliens, Bambi in A3, what the hell is the white, pasty thing at the end of Res and OMFG WTF was that for the AVP films. He already has me pegged for an incurable fanboy and amazingly enough still doesn't mind being seen with me in public. Ain't love grand.

190 minutes = 3 hours and ten minutes and the bunch of us have discussed this many times...but do we have any confirmation of this yet FRANTZ?
If it is true it is such an awesome thing !!!
It will also probabaly mean we have NO CLUE yet at all, what's really going on in this film.
ReplyFrantzPrometheus ForumDoes anyone know how long this movie is going to be?Feb 9, 2012
no we dont have any other clue about the lenght .... but ridley scott surely is for long movies ...i expect nothing less than 2 hours and half anyway
ReplyCharismPrometheus ForumDoes anyone know how long this movie is going to be?Feb 9, 2012
Hmm... Maybe it's 190 min of recorded material? I didn't expect more than 2 hours movie from this. This must get money. Longer movie = less seanses in a day = less money. All Aliens had 1:50 except Aliens, but this was Cameron, and his wife was a producer.
Replymadmak72Prometheus ForumDoes anyone know how long this movie is going to be?Feb 9, 2012
Good point about the expense of a long movie, but I have always believed that something of this scale, the more you spend the more you make. Well.... that is if the director can engage an audience well... and with Ridley at the helm he should be able to tell his story 3 hours if need be! Think of the repeat ticket sales, and MAN, this will be a movie that will SELL Blue-Rays. Huge profit margins there. **Although they will probably release the 3 hour version ON the Blue-Ray to promt more sales... anyway, I truly hope we at least get something as long as Aliens.
ReplydbPrometheus ForumDoes anyone know how long this movie is going to be?Feb 9, 2012
Judging by the long running times of the #1 and #2 international box office hits of all time (Titanic & Avatar). I'll be hoping for a 3 hour epic. Everyone knows the rest of the world can focus longer than a typical US audience. (Haters: I live in FL).
Either that or the derelict needs to sink into the ground at the end followed by the blue guy getting pushed off a piece of rubble by Shaw and slowly sinking away too.
(But she'll never forget him.)

.... that doesnt look like the same room to me. Lighting is different, and floor doesnt seem the same. But maybe thats because of the lighting. And am i mistaken or is one of the three dudes in a wheel chair? All three are suprised by the girl that seems to have just walked in and fell to her knees... Something must have went wrong lol.

Craigamore is onto something.
If you enlarge the top image (copy from browser and paste in Paint, or whatever), take a look to the left of Vickers' left shoulder. Notice the green stripe on the door, and that the door is labeled "C3".
Now, look at the door in the bottom image. Same green stripe, same "C3" label.
Why I don't think the rooms are necessarily the same: If you were to enter the room from the door to Vickers' left, the exam table would be directly in front of you. And in the view from behind Shaw in the bottom photo, there isn't an exam table directly ahead. Of course, it *could* very well be the same room, and there are two doors into the room, with the two photos shot from a different perspective.
So these two scenes may not take place in the exact same room, but they absolutely take place in the same location.
