Lawrence of ArabiaAlien: Covenant ForumBryan Fuller Is Not a Huge Fan of Alien Covenant

Thoughts_Dreams

The only characters that mattered in the original saga was Ripley, everyone else were side characters that barely had development. Some were likable, yes, but not the main course. The reason those were a bit more heavy though is because that was Ripley's (a human) story. These prequels are David's and will focus on his viewpoint. Never did I say that the A.I. were the main focus of Alien or that it was the case for the originals but they have served an integral role throughout. Please, open your mind just a tad to new experiences because that is what Ridley is doing instead of retreading. We got the hero story, now it's time for a villain. The humans in Prometheus and Covenant are fine because, like the original Alien, they were their just to be torn to pieces and we didn't need to know anything about their backgrounds, plus they serve their purpose in the mythos that is unfolding. That's not to say they aren't important and that there weren't any likable characters.

“Those scenes with Faris running back and forth unable to decide and asking for help were more intense than both scenes of Daniels fighting the Protomorphs.“

Yeah because that seemed to be a scenario that could happen in real life if you are unlucky enough (see my paragraph about the dangerous animal).

Thoughts_Dreams so being chased by a neomorph could happen in real life while fighting a protomorph not? Or Amy played so well that you can easily think of a real life scenario?

They are indeed new aliens, neo in ancient Greek means "New" or "young".

And Ridley said that they are the first generation of alien.

Great point. Every time David speaks it is as if he is just placating who he is talking to in order to manage them Lawrence of Arabia.

@Gavin "Whereas most men given access to such technology would likely have created the first true synthetic to be female"

I agree with this statement, yet I think I can explain why Peter Weyland made David a male and not a female.

When David wakes up, he is in a large room filled with a replica of Michalangelo's sculpture of David (or it could be real).  We also see a picture hanging on the wall which looks like it was made during Michalangelo's times.  These times that I'm referring too are the Renaissance times.  Peter Weyland is very intelligent and I think we can all agree with that.  David is also very intelligent and I think we could all agree with that too.  During the Renaissance, there were massive breakthroughs in about every subject area that existed at the time.  So, the people during those Renaissance times, especially the High Renaissance times, were very smart.  From observing Peter Weyland's room where David was awaken, we can assume that he is a fan of Renaissance art and we could even assume culture.

The point I'm getting to with this is that the artists during the Renaissance times thought the woman's body was ugly and that the male body is perfect.  So perfect, that the male body is considered god-like.

If we take Peter Weyland's art collection and his intelligence (reminiscent and possible paralleling of the men during Renaissance times) into consideration, I think it would make sense for David to be a male because of Peter Weyland's interest and character.

"Was Victor Frankenstein gay?"

I can't remember any movies about Frankenstein.  Sorry.  No comment.

"Fury-161, a prison complex entirely populated by men."

I always considered that as an interesting story for Ripley to figure out how to survive in.  She almost got raped too.  So, I just saw that as another element for Ripley to tackle.  I really don't consider that movie to have any homosexual sides.  The prisoners considered themselves religious too.  They were like monks and monks aren't homosexual.

"Vasquez, a woman with bigger balls than any of her comrades."

I thought she is one of the best characters in the whole Alien franchise.  It's good to see a woman in the military that is just as good or better than any of her comrades.  I'm glad the future is predicted to have women in the military like we see in Aliens.  I don't think she's anywhere close to being gay either.  She's just tough.  She's got a perfect job to show that toughness too.

"In Alien it was meant to be inferred that both Ripley and Lambert were bi-sexual, and that the crew of the Nostromo was 'freeloving'"

I've never heard this concept that I can remember.  I guess I could consider Ripley being bi-sexual in the original Alien (sorry Weaver), but I can't see Lambert as being bi either.  Of course, I wouldn't have imaged Lope or Hallet in A:C being gay.  Really, I don't notice much reference among the characters to sexuality in the original Alien movie.  I did think that Ripley had a thing for Dallas, but that could also have come from me reading "Alien: Out of the Shadows".  To me, the characters act like friends who have done what they are doing before.  That is, until the alien arrives all because of Ash, the stranger to the group.

"The humans do eventually find the engineers, and then learn they’re trying to rebuild their ship so they can come to Earth and destroy up. They stop the threat and kill the engineer, but Shaw can’t let it go. She needs to know why. Why go to all the trouble? Why bother to create in the first place?

David already knows the answer. He’s always known. Creators are disgusted by what they make. We create because we’re bored, and when we realize what we’ve made is actually alive we quickly try to control it. Eventually our creation evolves out of our control, and our only option left is then to kill it."

Shaw's quest for answers is redundant and part of what makes her human as the answers are right there but they are pointless as David already knows and is why he does what he does.

Gavin: I am sorry but I disagree a bit. Shaw extremely naive and irrational. That characters was without a doubt one of the worst characters that I have seen in the Alien franchise this far. She makes the characters in AR look like Oscar winners because at least they didn't behave that dumb compared to Shaw (as far as I remember it). You mention a movie that follows David and Shaw, if that is the movie that they would have been given us then I would have boycotted it because of Shaw so that is at least one thing that they got right. At least we can agree that Covenant had a lot about it that was bad.

Lawrence of Arabia: They were alright but the characters could have been built a lot better. They were a bit too anonymous for me. They should have had more parts that explained what the characters were about, that gave them more personality (for example what they did like crew messages that they have on youtube although they should have been in the movie).

I have to create the music videos in private because my wife absolutely disapproves of the whole strategy and has expressed anger at my explanation. She said she was over Alien: Covenant and wishes not to hear of any update, breakthrough, setback, etc..in our forum discussion.

I liked all the female characters and thought they were all quite competent and well-acted. I love Daniels but preferably, I liked Karine cuz even though Ledward was violently convulsing she still sympathized with him and gave him that hug. Plus the way she supported her husband was admiral. Shout out to Rosie though!

Homosexuality, in an Alien movie, what a novel concept (sarcasm alert)

In Alien it was meant to be inferred that both Ripley and Lambert were bi-sexual, and that the crew of the Nostromo was 'freeloving', a concept also inferred in the first two Terminator movies, but never actually mention until Terminator Salvation.

The Alien while seemingly feminine in its slender form has, quite literally a Penis for a head.

Vasquez, a woman with bigger balls than any of her comrades.

Fury-161, a prison complex entirely populated by men.

But here's the noodlebaker...

Weyland devises synthetic technology and his ultimate creation is a synthetic, virtually immortal and Aryan male. Whereas most men given access to such technology would likely have created the first true synthetic to be female, for both nurturing and sexual reasons. Is Peter Weyland gay, and having been created by him and nurtured by him is David also Gay? Was Victor Frankenstein gay?

I really didn't like Upworth.

I would have to pick Daniels over Faris because Daniels wouldn't leave a friend locked up in a room with an alien.  I like Daniels smarts and decision on the whole landing on Planet 4 question.  Of course, Oram was the captain, so the crew went to Planet 4.

@Batchpool

We don't really know what David is thinking, but I do think David didn't decide on killing Walter till after the kiss.  During the kiss, I think David was still deciding and wanted to see what Walter's reaction would be during and after the his kiss before he tried to kill him.

Walter's face is really confused looking, so I don't think that was what David wanted to see.  Plus, Walter didn't kiss back.  Maybe David was expecting that?  Walter really didn't make any expression other than being confused with David's kiss.

So, maybe Walter made the wrong emotional response, which was being confused.  I could see that David would have wanted a different emotional response which would make him think Walter is on his side in some way or at least Walter should've said something.  Walter didn't even say anything.  He was confused and silent.

I guess Walter isn't as smart as he is advertised to be by Weyland-Yutani.  I don't know why his guard was down after having that conversation with David before the kiss.  He should've been ready for a fight, but instead he was almost killed.

Mark Hamill, no joke. He works well as Luke, he did a good joker in the animated series, and I enjoyed his role in Kingsmen even though it was a small role. It seems to me that he can do a lot of things so yeah.

“These prequels, and Alien in general, are Lovecraftian horror which means they will be anti-antropocentrism or misanthropic in general.  Lovecraft's works tend not to focus on  characterization  of humans, in line with his view of humanity's insignificant place in the universe which is in line with the message of these films. So if you're expecting a likable cast of characters you will be disappointed.”

Then how did Alien 1, 2, and 3 manage to get the characters right but not the rest if they were not centered on the human part? Sorry but I don't buy that. In one way they might have said that mankind is a small part of the universe but they were still focused on the human characters and made them important to the story (1-4). It was the human adventure or what ever to call it that was important in the first 4 alien movies.

Up until Alien 4 they got many characters right and I would also say that the humans were important in AR. When they did Resurrection they started to fail with the humans for some reason.

I can easily remember likable or interesting characters from Alien 1-3 but I don't find many of those in AR and the prequels (which is not to say that they don't exist).

Maybe they said that humanity is just a small part in the universe but that is not to say that they are focused on AI, that is your wish rather than an actual fact even though AI was an important part. It wasn't up until they made Prometheus that the exaggerated the role of AI and hence reduced the human part. The movies until then had been about the human side even if you wish that they were about AI but to me they are not. In no way did the Alien movies before Prometheus spend that much time on robots so Alien has never been centered on AI and humans have always until Prometheus been more important than robots.

Your argument might hold for AC and Prometheus, but not for the rest. Because the prequels have failed with the human characters this far and have focused too much on AI they are a disappointment.

Both of them were OK, I didn't dislike any of them. It is just like with most human characters they were not given a lot of thought. One thing that AC did right was that none of the characters were written in a way that annoyed me. Prometheus had many characters that I disliked Covenant didn't have any of that so that was a step forward. The focus on David is what made the movie worse than it could have been.

I felt sort of sorry for Faris when she broke her foot and had to run away from the neomorph. That scene was a good action scene by the way because I really felt for her. Eventually the closest that we can get to that in real life is if we are for some reason chased by a dangerous animal (let's say a mad dog) and we hurt a foot while we still have to run the best way that we can to avoid getting killed.

“Those scenes with Faris running back and forth unable to decide and asking for help were more intense than both scenes of Daniels fighting the Protomorphs.“

Yeah because that seemed to be a scenario that could happen in real life if you are unlucky enough (see my paragraph about the dangerous animal).

To me it is like someone that is waking up in the morning takes a shower drinks some tea and so on. Maybe it is connected to the Xeno's morning routine?

First get something to drink, read some and then go out and kill some humans. ;)
