Alien: Earth is the official title for the upcoming TV series being developed for FX and Hulu. The Alien series was created by showrunner Noah Hawley and premieres on Disney+, Hulu and FX this summer! Read on for more information on the first ever Alien TV series!
Where does Alien: Earth take place?
The Alien: Earth series takes place on planet Earth, unlike the conventional space station / alien planet settings used for the Alien films.
The series' official tagine reads We Were Safer In Space - a play on the iconic In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream tagine of the 1979 original Alien film - hinting that the horrors Humanity will experience on Earth will be more terrifying than the ones experienced elsewhere.
When does Alien: Earth take place in the Alien timeline?
Alien: Earth will predate the original Alien film timeline by only 2 years, taking place in the year 2120 (the first Alien takes place in the year 2122), but 30 years after the events of Prometheus (2090).
Is Alien: Earth connected to Alien: Romulus?
The short answer, is no. Alien: Romulus takes place 12 years after the events of the Alien: Earth series and it was confirmed that while both projects were in development around the same time, there was no correspondence between Fede Alvarez and Noah Hawley regarding any crossover material. The two projects remained separate, so there will be no references to any of the elements found in Alien: Romulus.
What is Alien: Earth about?
Official plot synopsis for the Alien: Earth series was released in March, 2025:
When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat in FX’s highly anticipated TV series Alien: Earth from creator Noah Hawley.
Alien: Earth is set in 2120 when five corporations – Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold – wield the power of nations, and proprietary advancements in technology provide the promise of a new tomorrow.
The mysterious vessel referenced above is a Human vessel called the USCSS Maginot. The series teaser trailer reveals the Maginot was carrying a number of alien specimens on board, when some of them break containment - killing the on board crew and forcing the ship to crash land on Earth.
Beyond what the official synopsis provides, we also know the series will focus heavily on the development of Synthetic / Android technologies and the blending of technology and Humanity. The aforementioned corporations in the synopsis are all vying for dominance in a world with many untapped technological avenues - much like the world today with various corporations investing in alternative energy technologies. Some of the corporations in Alien: Earth will favor purely robotic Synthetics while others are experimenting with transhumanism and the integration of artificial intelligence in Human beings.
Where do the Alien vs. Predator films fit into this series?
While both Alien vs. Predator films took place on Earth as well, the series has been touted officially as the first time a Xenomorph has been on Earth, essentially rendering the AvP films no longer canon.
Xenomorph design in Alien: Earth
Thanks to a leaked behind the scenes video from the set of Alien: Earth, we have a good look at the practical Xenomorph suit used for the series:
It differs from previous Xenomorph designs which have prompted fans to wonder whether or not the Xenomorph was born from a different, non-human host.
More images of the Alien: Earth Xenomorph, among other media for the series can be found in the Alien: Earth image gallery here.
What actors are in Alien: Earth?
Alien: Earth will star a robust cast, featuring Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Adarsh Gourav, Kit Young, Timothy Olyphant, David Rysdahl, Babou Ceesay (Guerrilla, Damilola), Jonathan Ajayi (Wonder Woman 1984, Noughts and Crosses), Erana James (Uproar, The Wilds), Lily Newmark (Pin Cushion, Sex Education), Diêm Camille (Washington Black, Alex Rider 3), and Adrian Edmondson (War & Peace, A Spy Among Friends), Moe Bar-El (The Peripheral), with guest star appearances by: Richa Moorjani (Never Have I Ever), Karen Aldridge (Severance), Enzo Cilenti (The Crown), Max Rinehart (Industry), Amir Boutrous (Good Omens), Victoria Masoma, Tom Moya (Midsomer Murders), Andy Yu (Fargo), Michael Smiley (Bad Sisters), Jamie Bisping (Mandy) and Tanapol Chuksrida (Thai Cave Rescue).
How many seasons will Alien: Earth have?
While the future of Alien: Earth, like any series will rely heavily on performance, audience feedback and how much money the series can generate for FX / Disney, unlike most new series, FX are very confident and hopeful for the future of the series. So much so that they've already ordered and booked Noah Hawley for a second season!
Back in July 2024 while speaking to Variety, FX head John Landgraf was quoted saying:
We’re pretty bullish on ‘Alien: Earth’ and we’ve told him that assuming, as we hope, ‘Alien: Earth’ is a returning television series, we want him to focus on on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of Fargo.
So for now, Alien: Earth will at least span 2 seasons, with further seasons left to be determined.
