MemberOvomorph09/28/2011I don't see a discussion on one of the most important elements of the upcoming prequel....special effects.
I may be all alone on this one, but I'll be damned if Ridley decides to incorporate an unhealthy amount of CGI and green screens in Prometheus.
I was able to handle Cameron's "Aliens", but by the time Fincher raped the series with "Alien 3" I could not handle how lazy the effects teams had become.
Please, Ridley Scott, pleeeeaaase go back to your roots. Create a prequel that MAKES SENSE in being a prequel. Don't pull a Phantom Menace on us.
Who votes OLD SCHOOL Effects and Set Designs????

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011Practical > CGI. Practical is so, so much better.
Ridley has stated that he'll ONLY be using practical effects for this film. At Comic Con Charlize Theron said not seen any CGI used, or any green screen sets (just mock up CGI shots used on monitors to help the actors perform whilst on set).
And we also know for a fact that huge 200ft sets have been built inside the 007 stage at Pinewood.
More over; very, very early Prometheus news stated that an "8ft Anamatronic SJ had been built", with other rumours stating that the SJ will be "played by a man in a giant costume".
So I think it looks promising!
...Although there was an early on-set sighting that essentially stated: "3 Xenos were spotted in blu-fx suits and were ready for work on green screen".
We'll have to see!

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011I think a minimum of CGI will be used ...the only problem i see with pratical effects is that the movie will be totally in darkness ( and from some shoots it seems so ) ... and to be honest im a bit bored with this ... im not worried of CGI if they are made with taste ... ET was a pratical effect that today will make us laugh ...and jar jar is a CGI effect that today make us cry ...

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011Given Scott's avowed aims with the film I suspect CGI is largely extraneous to the project, apart from depicting space-flight. I hope he doesn't want to have the SJ swimming in pursuit of the earthlings.

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011No one talks bad about David Fincher. No one. Alien 3 was not his fault; it was Fox's. Fincher was brought onto that movie very late into production and didn't even have a definite script for most of it. He saved it if anything.
Of course Ridley Scott is going to use CGI: it's cheap and is more practical in terms of rendering things on the screen. He'll probably use CGI for panoramic shots or full-body E.T. shots and then use make-up and rubber suits for close-ups.

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011Yes, I read your post and we agree Spartacus. Good points all around.
I was responding to the erroneous notion of how David Fincher "raped the series with 'Alien 3'" written farther up the page. I want to get the word out that Alien 3 would have been a lot worse without him.

MemberOvomorph09/28/2011I have said that I understand everyone's frustration but I never agreed with it, I feel that film was grossly misinterpreted and unfairly critisized as well. Thanks for being so fair, transparent and honest about how YOU see it.

MemberOvomorph09/29/2011Xenotron that is actually incorrect.
Ridley has been recently quoted (possibly in the Comic-con footage? I can't quite remember) but anyway, he said that:
"Thats a miss conception, its actually no cheaper to do things with CGI".
