MemberOvomorph12/19/2011The recent Filmofelia article with Scott seems to confirm his disappointment with how Alien evolved into a series of straightforward actioners. Cameron's film is thrilling no doubt - but as Ridley appears to express, none of the subsequent films explored the more macabre themes of the first; themes I'd consider like the sexual predatory nature of the Xeno, the ancient remains of the Jockey race etc.
The impression I get from everything we've been drip-fed so far, is that in some skewed kind of way, Scott is salvaging his contribution of the first film, and attaching it to a new canon. It's as if the events of Alien will contribute to the story, but the overall grand tale has yet to be told, therefore negating the value of the sequels. Shame in one sense because it also makes Ripley less significant. Sigourney's turn in Alien3 was my favourite performance of the series, but if it means we can return to the darker premises of the original film, I'm all for Scott's disassociation.
I hope there won't be any references to themes from the sequels (the Queen pariticularly). Alien was a stylish horror, rooted in a realism that connected with its adult audience and made it a surprise blockbuster. But the Xeno sadly became more of a sideshow thrill with Aliens, and the cerebral concepts were diluted. Vincent Ward's unmade project had potential, but ultimately was sacrificed for being too "out there". Sadly the series couldn't make up it's mind what it wanted to be in 3 and 4, an we were left with a franchise in limbo that had really lost its way.
Scott isn't rebooting, just rescuing his creation through telling a new story that owes a little to a series of events that haven't even occurred in Prometheus's timeline yet. They will have some effect, therefore giving them some relevance in the scheme of things, but the original films won't be integral to the real story that has to be told….how man was created!
Prometheus is big budget and is probably obliged to have Cameron style thrills and explosions somewhere along the line - but I can also feel confident there will be a far more intellectual story at its heart. Telling the origin of mankind is no small subject, and hopefully we'll experience a wholly original and entertaining take on this subject that will leave us frazzled in the best way possible...leaving the theatre discussing new ideas!

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011Well, if the idea is that humanity is actually the rusult of some highly advanced, malevolent, ruthless intelligence mucking about with technology, that would explain a lot, wouldn't it?

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011I get the impression that Ridley didn't like the direction the Xeno's ended up going in, hence no traditional Xeno's in Prometheus. But that isn't to say that there arn't Xeno's full stop, I'm pretty certain there will be something completely original but with just a hint of Xeno.

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011Actually, the Alien is not even a Xeno as well...I believe cameron brought that term into play...like Scott said, producers and writers have squeezed them dry...I like to see something darker and sinister...and that is what Scott is going to give us...

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011I'll 3rd that. Whatever it is, I think we will all be pleasantly surprised.

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011In one of the interviews, Scott states that the odds of us being here, are astronomical without the intervention of aliens.........so why are the odds of aliens far in advance of humanity any less extreme? His position isn't logical, unless it's nothing more a bit of salesmanship for the plot of his latest movie.

MemberOvomorph12/19/2011i think it would be kind of cheap to find out that humans were made by aliens, not only is that contrary to what science has revealed, it is(perhaps as a result of the aforementioned fact) less majestic and profound.
what could work is if humans...as in the lifeforms required to produce humanity were created in a lab by other humans from other parts of the galaxy and distributed to alien worlds.

MemberOvomorph12/20/2011i think he made a bit broader statement ...and is that the probability that humanity evolved from nothing without some help ( divine or alien ) is quite low ...everything is too perfect to be the product of ...void ....

MemberOvomorph12/20/2011I have to say this is no surprise and I am quite happy there is no real connection with the Alien movies. The Alien franchise is long since dead I have been harking on about this for the past month on this site. No money in xenos so Fox wont touch it. Scott want go there either because it would ruin his name. Think about it as a big new venture where there is lots more to explore going in new directions. So long as some answers come in relation to Alien how and why etc I'll be more than happy. I too am really looking forward to it.

MemberTrilobite12/20/2011@ MCAID - I have been stating from the off that IMO this is exactly what Prometheus will be, which is the impression given to us by Ridley and "that LOST guy" Damon Hasslehoff (or something) - That Prometheus is set within the same universe but the events depicted within not only preceed Alien but head in a direction completely different to Alien, inspired by the ideas and notions that were the original driving forces of Alien (sex, life, death, ancient aliens etc.), that were later abandoned by the sequels for a more mainstream franchise.
Think of it this way - The Alien franchise stems from Prometheus, as will a new, original and more epic franchise dealing with the issues of gods and engineers. Prometheus is the trunk of the tree, the Alien franchise was/is but one of the branches, Prometheus will give the choice of many other branches... if you follow my meaning.
