The Darkest Hour

I've been reading reviews of this new sci-fi/alien invasion flick. I can't find a single word in favour of this film, which I thought looked quite interesting from the trailer. It is being universally slated! From what I'm reading about it it's not hard to imagine why. Think Skyline with invisible aliens & set in Moscow & your probably about there. But most worryingly of all I've just read in one review that it was written by non other than Jon Spaihts who, along with Damon Lindelof, also wrote Prometheus! Should we be concerned? Because the Darkest Hour is sounding like one of the worst sci-fi/alien invasion films ever made from what I'm reading (and I'm reading a lot!!) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3123612/ "The Darkest Hour isn’t a movie, it’s a sad, uninspired pastiche of sci-fi cliche surrounded by a dull, messy melange of lazy storytelling"

Ridley Scotts Legend - Minus the kick ass design of Darkness played by Tim Curry, that film is an abombination, yet he has also directed Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator & Black Hawk Down (amongst others) and those four are considered top-notch films by virtually everyone.

I'll give you Alien, Blade Runner and Black Hawk Down, but I felt Gladiator wasn't all that great. For reasons.

You get my point though - you can't win 'em all. Take the other Lost guy J J Abrams - Lost (nope), Star Trek (meh), Super 8 (its a big version of the aliens from star wars episode II), and the Fringe (love that program).

I agree with JJ Abrams, though I liked Super 8 (for reasons not involving the design of the alien). Lost, Star Trek, Cloverfield... All meh, for me. Don't get me started on Joss Whedon, though.

i did love Legend ... there are some scenes i can press the pause button and watch them for hours . i did hate super8 ( great start and then an abominable list of cliches ) Serenity ... is embarassing . i think Pandorum is a bit underrated

I saw it (the darkest hour) on Wednesday. Uhm, it was a complete nonsense and crap, in my opinion. +, I did enjoy Super 8 and Cloverfield. Just saw someone's discussing about it.

Cloverfield was different, that's about all really.

Pandorum was really really good. Didn't like the kind of Warrior-1337 girl otherwise.

I kinda enjoyed skyline....i guess cause i was'nt expecting much after reading so many negative reviews....I though Battle Los Angeles was one of the worst invasion movies ever...bored me to tears...but thats just my opinion. Cloverfield was interesting...the shaky camera annoyed the shit out of me...but at the same time I think it would have gone unnoticed if it was'nt for that particular gimmick? District 9.....now that was an awesome movie!...

I loved the A-team, and my fave scene in the film is when Murdock tries to defibrillate a car (makes me laugh every time). Pandorum, I don't really know, always wanted to watch it then forgot about it.

PAndorum is interesting ....very cliche is some parts but its carried by a very nice plot ( with alot of twists ) good technical part and a ben foster in great shape . There are some let downs in the secondary characters ( the woman plain suck ) . ITs classic SCI-FI that rely more on the plot than special effects ( that are indeed good ) BTW there is an horror gem that almost no one know and its called THE BURROWHERS ...that is a good , dark , gritty movie .

Sometimes good screenplays can be poorly executed (insert example here). But sometimes average screenplays can be elevated to something special - dare I say it, the original screenplay for Alien (called Starbeast) was on the whole average. It took Sir Ridley, his team and serendipity to pull Alien out of the doldrums and into an unparalleled plane. I've not been convinced about Jon Spaights - maybe nor was Sir Ridley (hence Damon Lindelof). But you can trust that whatever the screenplay finally looked like, this director is the sort to change things while in the flow of it - usually to the benefit of the final production. Therefore, I tend to have faith in something good being delivered. P.S. I read somewhere that Jon Spaights had distanced himself from the "Alien Harvest" script that's been circulating the Web - another reason to be optimistic.
