MemberOvomorph01/12/2012...just adding my idea based solely on what I've seen in the trailer.
Bearing in mind there are a lot of shots out of sequence in the trailer...
For whatever reason, the crew of the Prometheus head out to explore the Alien structures on the alien planet. Dunno why they go - but i don't think it's a distress beacon thing - Ridley's done that once already in the original Alien and i reckon he won't use that ol' line again.
One thing is clear to me, there are NO Engineers left alive...everything is derelict.
They explore the derelict and find the 'star chart room' - amongst other things. Obviously, they find the room with the human head statue and the ampules. Now, as the tagline suggests, the crew think this points to the beginning of mankind ('they went looking for our beginning'). However, upon disturbing the ampules as they try to remove them for study, they set off alarm systems etc and one of the guys gets 'infected' by whatever's in the ampule.
Now, this is where it gets interesting....the crew at first think that the ampules are responsible for mankind's existence, BUT they're actually designed to mutate humans into more Engineers - this is how the engineers propagate I think.
So, they all race back to the Prometheus, and the chap who got 'infected' starts to mutate and turn against the humans - probably so he can try and mutate them too (possible by incapacitating them and taking them back to the ampules - a bit like the Alien drones do in the other films).
We then see this mutant human in the star chart room/bridge/telescope room. We see him here mid-mutation. He's far bigger than a human, the bridge of his nose seems weird - sort of halfway between human and the snorkel style nose of the Jockey. He then fully mutates and enters the telescope chair and tries to take off in the ship. His destination is Earth, where he plans to infect all human life and turn them all into Engineers.
The captain of the Prometheus takes off, leaving Shaw and the other one on the ground. He crashes into the alien ship in a suicide attempt to ensure the ship and it's deadly cargo can't make it back to Earth.
The Prometheus crew thought they were discovering the origin of mankind, but they stubbled across a dead alien race that can only live by infecting and mutating human life...hence the words at the beginning of the trailer: "You don't understand' , 'we were wrong' and 'I'm so sorry'...
...there we go, hope you followed it ok. It seems to tie in a lot of things ok for me. But one thing that i can't find a reason for is the big circular ship you see over the water fall....
thanks for reading, and go easy on your comments - it's just a bit of fun after all!
PS: I'd not seen the belly inflate thing till just, so yeah, the guy who gets infected maybe impregnates Shaw or someone else and either the baby or the original infected human turns into the Engineer. But however it happens - the crux of my argument is that the Enginneers need to harvest us poor humans in order to procreate. They're are none of the left anymore - until one of the crew gets themselves mutated into one of them and tries to kick start the Engineer race again by flying off to Earth to harvest mankind - and that's what the Prometheus crew find out and try and stop.....

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012I've got similar views 'Krak Fox'. My idea is that the evidence they find on Earth infects and starts to slowly change the guy we are seeing in the wheel chair. From the infection he mysteriously knows of the Engineers temple location.
I'm tending to think the other mutation (helmet guy) is an early form or originator of the xeno; perhaps what ever he eventually mutates into will lay eggs and lead to the film ALIEN.
I'm going with your idea though but think that Shaw will have a baby which will grow into the giant blue Engineer that is operating the chair.

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012Two things from trailers that support this view ...
1) In the Teaser Trailer part 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vD7Z-CTbbKk
at about 8-10 seconds we see what looks like 'the mutated man' growing about a foott in height like his legs are extending. And as we know engineers are 'tall' so the human mutates into an engineer theory seems viable.
and 2) the ommisson of the belly inflating, which was in the original minute long trailer. but not in the new "full length" trailer ... tell tale sign that this is a key part of the plot?
for my money The Mutated Man is Elizabeth Shaws love interest and he rapes or sleeps with her after his infection and she gives birth to something or someone ?

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012While I appreciate Krak Fox sharing his idea for the plot, I feel that PROMETHEUS will be bigger and more action-oriented than that. With the success of hard core sci fi action movies like AVATAR & the very enjoyable PLANET OF APES movie, 20th Century Fox would want to have repeat business. There are mercenary characters in the movie which I guarantee translate into action scenes. I think there will be clashes between human & infected humans, humans vs aliens/SJ. There are frequently speculated scenes of "uncivilized behavior" which is going to be something we have never seen before. They will not re-visit the successful ALIEN franchise without the action angle.

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012Engr101 - I know what you mean - I'm just summing up without going into the nitty gritty details and have missed out a lot of the A to B stuff to in order to get across the backbone of the story. How many action scenes, fights, uncivilised behaviour etc there will be is by the by - i just wanted to put across an overall basic premise of the movie : )

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012Thanks for posting that Krak. It's always interesting to read other peoples opinions. This is definately one of the better forums when it comes to quality speculation :)
I've had the same thought about the Engineers and/or Jockeys being a dead species that gets revived by the humans in the movie. But, I'm not sure "dead species" is even correct, and I'm not sure being revived/reborn is even accidental from the Engineers point of view. This might be the Engineers way of being immortal of sorts and waiting out the Aeons while their creations evolve.
A couple thoughts.
Engineer creates life on a large number of planets, and leaves some breadcrumbs behind. Once a creation evolves intellectually and technologically enough to discover the breadcrumb, that civilization is ripe enough to be harvested.
Perhaps the Engineer awaits in a stasis chamber seen in the cockpit room to be awakened by curious creations? Or, like you said, the Engineer has a trap setup in his temple where any species finding it gets mutated and becomes the Engineer. Throw in some type of genetic memory, and the Engineer is basically resurrected.
I don't think the Engineer is part of a civilization. I think he is the last of his kind or one of a kind due to his resurrection method. I think the space jockeys are also his creation and his servants. He might be going to earth to crete servants instead of creating more of his kind.

MemberOvomorph01/12/2012I always figured the space jockey's chair looked too much like a gun to be anything else... and I was also beginning to wonder why he would need to wear an "environment suit" when sitting in the chair - unless the chamber would open up to be exposed to space. When I add these things up with the fact that these new urns or specimen capsules look pretty aerodynamic in shape - well, I'm wondering if the mechanism is some sort of delivery system used to seed worlds or maybe used as a biological weapon by shooting these urns into a planet they want to wipe out causing widespread planetary infestation. Probably not but you know, I always say if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
