AdminEngineerFeb-28-2012 12:59 PMI'm not so sure about that now. Unless the Derelict is never discovered by the crew, and instead is sent from another planet by the Engineers to stop the humans from discovering something on the planet they do venture to. -- That scene where the Derelcit crashes at the end of the trailer.(we think it hits the PROMETHEUS, stranding VIckers and Shaw)
So you think the tunnels are part of the temple and lead deep under ground to the ampule room and map rooms instead of being part of the derelict ship?

Gavin
MemberTrilobiteFeb-28-2012 1:04 PMI have a suspicion that the temple may have actually been built on top of the derelict by an ancient race, it would explain why no such temple was found by the colonists in Aliens, The Derelict destroyed it upon taking off...
Crew enter temple, find a hole, tunnels lead to the ampule room which them leads to the innards of the Derelict. the deeper they go the more advanced things get.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 1:06 PMI don't think it's an excavation site on Earth, otherwise, why are the crew members wearing space suits with helmets? I think it's a drain to keep rain water and runoff from flooding the Big Head/Ampule room.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 1:25 PMThe hole looks like a wound or an orifice, because there's not a sharp rim at the top, rather the rock flows into the hole and downward. Or, in another way, the rock is being sucked down there. (I'm thinking of that Giger painting of the derelict where the rocks around the ship look like they're recoiling away from the ship.) It seems like the hole has been created unnaturally (acid?).
Maybe the hole isn't very deep (or at least terminates without leading to another room), and something is grown or incubated in it.
If the hole is a tunnel to somewhere else, I imagine some sort of creature passing through the hole, and if you look at the following picture, it'd be massive. You could plunk 4 or 5 of the crew in the photo through the hole side by side.

I'm curious about the placement of the hole, too. It's centered in front of the doorway the crew is walking through. I wonder if there's any significance to that, and whether there are additional holes that we don't see.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 1:32 PMYou know, if that is inside the derelict... and the derilict is supposedly a living, organic kind of being/ship..... I'm not real sure I'd go anywhere near that hole.

CrazyDave55811
MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 1:37 PM@RickK I think you described it perfectly. Apart from that, I wouldn't want to be near that hole; I'd imagine the floor has a tendency to be slippery, and apart from the assumption of it being organic, it's sure to be a long way down. My testicles shrink from looking down from huge heights as it is, and if it's pitch black, ergh.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 2:02 PM@RickK,
That's freaky. It could be some sort of breathing tube. Imagine falling or being sucked into it, and the last thing anyone hears is your scream trailing off.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 2:22 PMI was thinking more along the lines of... well - that the image brings to mind something at the completely OPPOSITE end of the digestive tract.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 5:37 PM@RickK
Opposite of the digestive tract? You mean like, er, puke? Or shit going in instead of out? Either way it's spooky.
@jones
If it's a breathing tube then I'm sure that anyone inside that room will have to worry about being sucked in or pushed out all because of that hole. It doesn't look like there's anything to hold on to, either. xD

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 7:36 PMThe way rock does seem to be "flowing" down that hole, I wonder if it's volcanic rock, maybe that's a lava flow going down into the opening
