Couldn't find this anywhere recently or otherwise... lock freely if it's been discussed.
Are we missing something obivious?
The woman looking biomech figure giving birth... it's the derelict.
The shape is also very reminiscent of the Egyptian symbol of "KA" translated as "soul or spirit".
Ridley is a fan of the "all about everything" theory... right?
I began thinking of this based on the other thread about the "derelict as a meatphor". There will be tons of cross-religious metaphors... yes?
Collating...

I realized somethng else late last night ina cold sweat that's kinda related. Ridley, in that same speech i think, mentioned the last 8 minutes of the film, and that this is WHERE we will see ties to the Alien Franchise/Universe..."starands of DNA' was how he put it...
I think in the last 8 minutes this is where we will see whatever made the hole in the hull of the Space Jockey Vessel and which we all know where it leads, I think we're going to see 1 or more facehuggers in the last 8 minutes of the film.
Just an educated hunch.

Ka (upside down)...

@ Spartacus:
Something makes that hole, right? A facehugger has the ability to melt through a space helmet without hurting its occupant and one drop of its blood nearly breeched the Nostromo... tough little sons of bitches.

Is it just me or does the victim in that picture look slightly like a Space Jockey? Maybe it's just Giger's style .
March 06, 2012
No, That is EXACTLY WHAT IT IS ...I RECOMMEND YOU READ OR LOOK THROUGH THE BOOK AT LEAST ENTITLED..."NECRONOMICON"...YOU CAN FIND EXPLANATIONS FOR HIS MORE INFLUENTIAL PAINTINGS AND ALSO THE BOOK "THE ALIEN VAULT" EXPLAINS A LOT OF THEM AS WELL. THERE ARE LOTS OF REFERENCES IN THE ONLINE db OF STUFF AS WELL
IF YOU GO LOOKING ON GOOGLE YOU CAN FIND WHERE TO DOWNLOAD THE ACTUAL BOOK ITSELF WHICH I DID AND IT IS AWESOME.

hello,.
This Giger painting made me think the alien (pictured top) is fertilising the egg,.
The glow comes from the belly,. the life force to coppulate the egg,.
March 06, 2012
What if where the egg is coming from is the womb of the one that created it? Shaw? It is pretty obvious that the figure is female....like Murphy said, the Life Force or the origin of this egg is from a female but what kind of female?

With just a quick search on Google I came up with 2 early posts about this:
The Source of an Alien Derelict
Nut
The shape is most definitely based on Nut rather than Ka though.
March 06, 2012
@Cain, EXACTLY! That's what I was thinking. What happens if in the last few moments of the trailer when Shaw screams "PLEASE", she's giving birth to an egg.

Yes, thanks for those links Biomechanic. I see this has been previously dealt with brilliantly. And here I've been sitting sifting through the pages of posts on this site when I could simply Google my request... sometimes my stupidity amazes me.

The Egyptian Goddess Nut...
March 06, 2012
critics have commented on the vaginal likeness of the hole in the derelict.....the comparison between the derelict and nut is a very interesting one
March 06, 2012
Wiki says this
Nut was the goddess of the sky.She was seen as arching over the earth, protecting it.
Theres your confirmation for noahs ark then too.... Wow and all this was already concieved and I never even looked into this symboliism before hearing of prometheus but then again why would you as it's only now they are starting to let this cat out the bag....
Jone's.... Jonesy..... Here kitty kitty
March 06, 2012
whoops double post.... Anyway the shape is basically uncanny I think you are 110% right on this one....
Just also picked up on this after further reading on wiki
A sacred symbol of Nut was the ladder, used by Osiris to enter her heavenly skies. This ladder-symbol was called maqet and was placed in tombs to protect the deceased
Jacobs Ladder from spirit to matter and matter to spirit in conjunction with the signs of the zodiacin our galaxy
she Who Holds a Thousand Souls: Because of her role in the re-birthing of Ra every morning and in her son Osiris's resurrection, Nut became a key god in many of the myths about the after-life
Nut was the goddess of the sky and all heavenly bodies, a symbol of protecting the dead when they enter the after life. According to the Egyptians, during the day, the heavenly bodies—such as the sun and moon—would make their way across her body. Then, at dusk, they would be swallowed, pass through her belly during the night, and be reborn at dawn
Nut is also the barrier separating the forces of chaos from the ordered cosmos in the world Ridley also said they would have 2 sides to the Space Jocky alien race and talked about chaos and order... Hmmmm defo onto somthing with this one yep
So somone is going to die and be brought back to life in this film... but won't be the same? I think this is perhaps a big possibility we see a resurrection... Could get a bit fanatical on that spaceship but instead of just a horror death we see a resurrection thats actually scarier
the archielogical dig will probably be eygpt or near to which is in africa where also the first homo-sapiens are reported to have evolved.
Going to start researching RA and Osiris now... RA is the sun and Osiris is the eye if I'm not mistaken... So we've just leaped from greek mythology to eygptian mythology but greek mythology is later on so we must start before weylands references to unravel some of this puzzle.... AMAZING POST BY THE OP
Basically even if the SJ's exterminated all of us they could bring us all back to life again if they wanted to ha ha think about that
Now I've also started thinking about soul swapping can they swap peoples souls that would mean the only ones who would be imune are the androids in this scenario... Like taking holloways soul and put somone else in there or swap crew members souls about very psychological horror gone insane after all the body is only a vessel, matter is it all about the soul this movie and life and death... Perhaps we are thinking on the wrong level and need to start thinking of the human soul and not the crude material i,e, the biological skills we know the SJ's to already possess
