MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 12:44 PMHas anyone wonderd why they would call the ship Prometheus? Why would you name a ship after a myth that involves stealing something ( Fire )from a higher inteligence (Gods). Admittedly these "beings" have no reference point of our culture and its mythalogical stories. Its more a point that by the names definition "we" are being blatantly obviouse in our intentions of setting out on a journey to take something that is not ours to take. Weird thinking or just a blind alley?

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 12:49 PMYea, make me wonder too. It's like naming your ship ICARUS (from the movie SUNSHINE featuring Benedict Wong, an actor in PROMETHEUS). As we all know ICARUS comes crashing to Earth when he flies to close to the Sun. I wouldn't board that ship. Makes you think about naming your space shuttle ATLANTIS when we know what happened to that continent. (Maybe that is about ATLANTIS rising). But it serves as a literary device used very often in Hollywood.

I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:00 PMThat's a very good point. Calling the ship Prometheus was like having a sign on the ship saying 'Hey, aliens, we're coming to steal your technology, and you're going to eat our guts for doing so'

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:02 PMUnless you´re naming it not because of the myth, but because of the name´s meaning: in classic greek, "Prometheus" means "forethinker".

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:03 PMMakes me wonder if the whole Prometheus myth idea is a non plot. Although RS has talked about the myth several times. Frustratingly facinating.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:05 PMGreat point centrospere I hadnt thought of that angle.
Although its double meaning could be seen as misleading dont you think? It seems to me that our imaginations have been let loose on this film which can only be a good thing. Makes you wonder if RS "pops in" every now and again to give himself some entertainment in plot speculation.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:16 PMForethinker may have a positive vibe to it but you know what happens to the Great Forethinker in this particular Greek mythology. He is chained to a rock with an Eagle pecking at its liver...for an eternity. But forget all this logical thinking, it's a poetic license.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 1:52 PMI'd infer (from the TED footage) that Peter Weyland reveres the character of Prometheus - an Icon who's daring enough to take from the "gods" and give to mankind. If so, and the "Prometheus" mission is anticipated (in planning) as a major landmark for the Weyland compnay (most probably as Peter Weyland's coming towards the end of his natural life - or even comes to fruition after he's expired) it sort of makes sense that they'd give the ship that name. It's then ironic that the events of the mission turn out to be Prometheus-esch (as they initially assume it to be an invitation).

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 2:10 PMAt the end of the TED talk, Weyland states that we are the gods now. Maybe it isn't about stealing from the SJ/Aliens/whatever, but who's gonna steal what from us?

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 2:15 PMOh, and the use of flametrowers... Prometheus did steal fire from the Gods.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 2:29 PM@truman, Your original post on this thread made me laugh---how true. I hope RS does poke in here to see what his fuss is about, that would be great. Because there is a hell of a lot of GREAT ideas and theories floating around on this site. I love it.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 2:40 PMI do think that Ridley Scott should have named the ship something like USS .....o. I mean for example USS Nostromo, USS Sulaco etc. To be honest I am not sure whether Prometheus belongs to Weyland/Yutani or to the navy.....or where Nostromo or Sulaco belonged to.

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 2:57 PMIt's not uncommon to name ships after mythology.
Narcissus anyone?

MemberOvomorphMar-22-2012 3:44 PMIf you examine the Prometheus Project files on the Weyland Site you can see that the funds appropriated for the endeavor are in the neighborhood of 2.3 Trillion dollars. 50% of this coming from Weyland Industries, 25% being allocated by Government, this does not mean the US, and the final 25% coming from private contributions. The companies valuation being 218 Trillion, this project would be more like a generous charatable contribution rather than a hardship. However look on the bright side. The financial future of our world economy is simply dazzling!

the other ICARUS ship (named from the fans) of planet of the Apes was one more cool ship
