The ampules in the Ampule Room (at least the bigger ones Shaw sees around the Big Head may resemble ancient Egyptian canopic jars (used to individually preserve the various bits of viscera of mummies). Canopic jars, however, are usually topped with stoppers in the shape of animal heads. It's a long shot, but maybe this ties back to the origins story (the animal heads representing the idea that whatever comes out of the jar turns you into a different kind of creature, as interpreted visually by an ancient people.) No idea how this may relate to diferent-sized containers, though - canopic jars did exist in different sizes, but only because animals were often mummified too.

Also, in the 2nd TV spot]2nd TV spot that came out there is a shot of another ampule room where the ampules are stacked and there are sections of smaller ampules.

hmmm. interesting, perhaps the SJ have designed many weapons in trying to create the perfect one which may eventually become the xenomorph
And perhaps we see some of these escape/breed with the crew since we know some of them die by "bugs"
Also the virus looking black ooze maybe one of these 'weapons' from the ampule room.

This was discussed when leaked pictures came from the set some time ago.
It probably maybe that the jars are somehow biomechanical eggs, of some kind...
something we're not used to. Or it might be that they hold dirrent content, and shift in size, becouse of that.

I've had a couple of different ideas.
1. They are different varieties of creature, each have a specialized part to play in an invasion. Like the different ranks and parts of an army.
2. Thye are the separate ingredients for creating life forms. The engineers, rather than carry a generic set creatures, carry with them all the elements required to create a bespoke creature based on conditions of the planet they encounter.
We humans arrive, and start mixing things up, like a bunch of children with a new chemistry set, and f**k the whole thing up for them and us.

Could be that the contents were altered prior to our arrival or that we were meant to receive instruction on how to use the contents. Our knowledge could well be child-like compared to the Engineers, but we take samples and examine the samples as if we have some sort of expertise. Perhaps with our relative rudimentary understanding we fail to see that we are way, way, way in over our heads.
