Ridley Scott has said this in not an Alien prequel. When you look at the evidence you see that these are not the same ship or planet. it is definitely not the same planet, but the ship is way too similar

Wow, good work. Interesting... Maybe a hole in the story already?

I've been going back and forth for awhile and I've beginning to settle on the idea that they're not the same planet, not the same ship......

What hole @Bonedust? Ridley DID say it was a prequel (we have that in our news archive); it's not a direct prequel.... The planetoid in 'Alien' is too small to be the planet in 'Prometheus'. The ship does have too many slight differences in shape to be the same ship in 'Alien'. It would seem to me that whatever happened to the ship in 'Alien' happened separately from 'Prometheus' and likely before it.....If this is their home system, why couldn't a different ship have had the accident that finds that derelict where it is in 'Alien'? What occurs in 'Prometheus' is its own thing in that universe...where's the hole in that story?

JESUS H ! Give it a rest! After 30 years you people need something better to do than compare sets and models of a SciFi move... Just enjoy the movie and move on... Next you'll be comparing TOS USS Enterpsie to the 'Re-Boot' USS Enterprise from Star Trek. IT ONLY A MOVIE, IT'S NOT REAL! ARGGGHHHH!

Oh, it is going to be the same ship. Same LV-426. Same Space Jockey. I would hate it if Ridley Scott resurrected the identicle Space Jockey in an identical chair-thingy in an identical chamber only to say "Oh yeah, it LOOKS the same but its different. Maybe he just modernized it. Eye candy. Not saying it's bad but this is a genre that has fanatical fans. Let's face it, we LOVE picking out differences. A hole in the story? Possibly. A modernized update? Probably. :D

I think this is what Ridley Scot meant when he said we will see Alien DNA in this one. It's the same species and same class of spacecraft, but not the one in Alien. Capt. David 7

@Cap'n Dave: Pretty solid research, man. Gotta say Space Jockey vs. Star Chamber got my mind racing. Age of the derelict? Fossilization?

craigamore

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 11:48 PM
Now remember Late..the Jockey in the chair is a suit, so any "fossilization" may just be desiccation of a far less ancient kind....

Capt. David

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 11:51 PM
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Space Jockey is a biomechanical suit the Humanoids wear to interface them with the ship. Capt. David 7

The only thing I can be sure about is in that top picture in the derelict model shop, Stanley Kubrick was taking a leak under that workbench when he realized he had been caught on camera. Oh, that and those ribs of the SJ in Alien are actually stress bearing suit girders but Ridley is forgiven in my book for not having the chance to point that out way back when.

RedLeader said: "Looks the same to me..unless you want to get picky." Granted that, AT A GLANCE, the alien ship, the interior, etc appear to be the same, but look at them for more than a few seconds and you'll see many differences. The same applies the the Space Jockey itself, compare and contrast: There are four possible reasons for these obvious changes: a) Ridley and his team have made a number of mistakes (unlikely!) b) Ridley is ret-conning the SJ and the alien ship (I hope not) c) It's NOT the same alien ship or SJ as seen in alien d) It IS the same alien ship and SJ as seen in Alien, but being bio-mechnical they will start off looking as they do in the existing Prometheus screenshots and at some time 'morph' (maybe or maybe not seen in Prometheus) into what we have seen in Alien.

It's the same ship, same planet, same SJ's. This movie is a re-imagining of the universe Alien was set in, things are going to look different.

@Bonedust It does seem a little like looking to find holes in the story, to call “hole in the story”, simply on this basis? Who has declared that the Space Jockey, “chair-thingy”, and chamber are supposed to be “identical”? And why must it be the same vehicle - or planet, for that matter? Why might it not be one of a fleet of 20 vehicles, that are all similar? Even at our limited stage of development, we have long since recognized the benefits in duplicating production of our devices and technology: For example, we had 6 Space Shuttles? If all markings were removed and they were taxied to park in a line in front of you, could you really have told them apart? They were not "identical" - but they were built on the same basic template, had a common design and were, therefore, similar enough to be generic - and practically indistinguishable.

I really think we need to give Ridley Scott artistic licence to revisit and revamp certain aspects of the SJ and "derelct ship" so long as it doesn't alter (at least greatly) the Alien story...here's why (and understand I am coming at this as a complete fan of the original Alien movie); 1) time is not a 1:1 ratio in movies...obviously..or else a 24 hour setting would take 24 hours to tell..director's take licence with time all the time in movies and use it to their benefit, so the fact that we know the derelect ship from the original Alien movie to potentially be millions of years old is not relevant...that's our assumption of it and we were never told with 100% certainty just what happened to it before...it's all conjecture both time and story wise. Obviously you can draw some pretty basic assumptions if it's fossilized then we know it takes millions of years on earth for something to fossilize and that's under ground with great pressure...above ground it could have become dust or the alien atmosphere could have served to preserve it like footprints undisturbed on the moon...here again as a movie goer we allow the director certain freedom to take us where he is going to and we have to let go of preconceived thoughts, beliefs, etc. in this process... 2) the special FX have grown incredibly since 1979...as incredible as the FX were for 1979, it's 2012 and I'm sure there are things about the original SJ and derelect ship that bugged Ridley Scott when he revisited it from an artistic standpoint (remember he's telling a visual story) and he felt the artistic licence (or perhaps need) to "correct" or even just to modernize them to keep the story interesting or to better suit the Prometheus story. I look at it like the ship and SJ are iconic enough that we are familiar with them so he is perhaps expanding upon the brief glimpses of what we saw in Alien and not tying himself to what was perhaps 8 minutes of film in the original Alien and any preconceived theories by fans in telling the Prometheius story... I keep in mind that the original SJ was only seen for about a minute in Alien...everything we know about it is complete conjecture on our part or a passing statement or question posed by Scott or someone else involved in Alien..it was never a developed plot of how that ship got there and we are basing the SJ in Prometheus on that minute...the truth is we have no idea so RS can go anywhere he wants...I doubt he is allowing himself to get caught up in minutia but rather is using his artistic licence to create something that while it won't line up perfectly with Alien enough of the strands of DNA will be there to make the logical leap and connection to Alien. 3) we love the original Alien so much that I think we may sometimes feel threatened by anything that may potentially change our understanding of something we don't even know anything about in the first place...I'm guilty of this too..I think it's more romantic association than anything...but importantly so long as the upgrades, changes, revised aspects of the ship and the SJ don't drastically change the DNA of Alien then it gives RS complete licence to go anywhere he wants and well....he did say it was not a DIRECT prequel...so he really built a lot of wiggle room in to give himself room to move in which ever direction he will take us. I believe when it's all said and done we will have enough of a story to connect the dots which is how RS operates anyways...the Alien creature was rarely seen fully in the original b/c it would ruin it's impact if it was and I think he's taking a similar approach to the story line and will allow us the freedom to connect the dots to Alien in the end. I do believe this the planet and ship from the original Alien movie. I could be wrong but I think this is plausible enough that I'm going to give him the room to take me where he is going to w/o preconceived notions in stone on my part.

@JonesTheCat - I think it's "C", and @ allinamberclad you are correct, Ridley Scott seems to hint that, yes this IS the same Universe, but the Universe is a mighty damn big place. This is the same race, but not the same planet, or ship. But this does give us the connection to the original Alien ... one we will see revealed in the last 10 minutes of the movie. That's one thing that has been repeated ... the last 10 minutes are everything in this movie. Capt. David 7

Why is it such a hard concept to grasp? It's not the same ship.....

We still have no idea on the planet. I still think it might be a sister moon to LV426 but really it doesn't matter to me. The planet in the background just looks too similar to alien. people have been saying the last 10 minutes were all super closed set and few have seen it. I hope for not a xeno but something more subtle. I think the original alien would ruin it for me.

@genjitsu17, not a hard concept to grasp...but until we have definitive proof I'll leave the door open b/c knowing something about how director's take artistic liberty all the time I don't believe this is a closed case...I'm open to it either way, doesn't really matter to me one way or another..weather it is or is not the same ship/planet as in Alien, but if it is it's fine with me too..

Thing is, the jockey chair looks cheaper than the one in Alien, as does the room. They look like plastic. Doesn't look like they're taking advantage of the growth of SFX in the last 30 years.

Shane

MemberOvomorphApr-06-2012 3:41 PM
@biehn-bandit according to a couple people on avpgalaxy, the special effects were only completely finished in the last few weeks, so that might change. hell, with each additional trailer things keep looking different. Each one has more and more after effects added. Just wait and see, maybe it will surprise us.

I find it hard to conceive Ridley Scott "re-imagining" his own work. Typically a re-imagining is done by someone "based" on someone else's work. If this were the same ship, space jockey, and planet ... I think he would stay with the original and maybe enhance a few things. But this is far beyond any enhancement. This is different. That said, I think Ridley Scott will give us the answer to the mystery of the original derelict ship and space jockey. But I think it will be an indirect, or inferred answer. This will be new, but will still let us understand what happened. Keep in mind Alien Resurrection takes place at least 257 years later than Alien, and there is no history of this race of superior Humanoids' with God-complexes wrath on Earth inhabitants. Something happens. Something "big". Capt. David 7
