i remember when I saw that and what I was thinking...In the scene right before it she shows her SIGN to will smith's lady...I knew right then she was gonna die...I found a Lot of that movie "Cheesy" quite frankly, but THAT moment, you are right was filmed very very well, and the effect it had on audiences on the big screen was in fact palpable. It cannot be easy to film a scene like that.

your right Spartacus, The movie IS cheesy in many part. To make that scene they had to build a landscape scene and then what they did was turn it on its side. Fire mostly rises, so to get that look, they had the the camera turned too. thats how the fire moves the way it did.

'Dark City' - Shell Beach 'Blade Runner' - Tears in Rain I'm sure I can come up with more if I thought about it longer.

@Rickk, I have to agree with that choice Rickk in fact...It is the only sci-fi moment that I have spent my lifetime trying to recreate properly in video game play to no avail...there was one game made for the PC where you could do it but I was crap at at it, and I want a new game to come out one day where I can die spending my last few moments blowing that Muther Up by shooting a photon in that tube thingy!!!

Spartacus, you should check it out. By the way, I'm into electronic-based music (EDM, EBM, industrial, etc.) and I can't tell you how many songs I have that use many dialogues/quotes/sounds/etc. from these beloved sci-fi movies we mention on this forum. Sci-fi and that music goes hand in hand in my opinion.

My other choice would have been the scene in Outland where the guys head pops from explosive decompression. LOL!!

wow, awesome post membrane I think so too, in fact I think sound makes the biggest difference in how we feel and especially how our own "sense memory" is activated anyone with a decent enough surround system will tell you it is so...also...as a direct example...and being Jewish and a bit older, when I first saw the ending of Inglorious Basterds it was like a cathartic experience, seeing The Top Nazi Brass get gunned down in explosions and fire was quite exhilarating even though it was really just a comedy. The sound effects made it all that more enjoyable. The Baseball Bat scene in particular made incredible use of it and there are far better examples than just this film. You are so on the money there IMO.

Oh man how could I have forgotten The Thing. The scene where they try and use the defibrillator on the guy and his chest turns into a huge mouth and bites the other guys arms off. That was one of those scenes where your brain just refuses to acknowlege what you have just seen.

I'll never forget the scene in the most recent star trek film where they sky dive down onto a huge drill? (can't remember well) the villains were using to destroy Spock's planet. Kirk and another crew member duke it out with some Romulans on one of the platforms of the weapon while it's operating. The platform didn't seem very stable. Very edgy stuff. I enjoyed that scene. Practically all of District 9 was memorable.

@Rickk, funny you said that...One of my all time Science Fiction favorite Horror films was a little unkown Brian De Palma Gem called "The Fury" with Kirk Douglas and John Cassavettes {Great Actor, think he died a few years back} and Amy Irving...Here is the ending to that film...It Rocks !!! "STAR WARS (1977).... Opening scene... pan to Tattooine... enter Blockade Runner & Imperial Cruiser." Me too! One of the best scenes and the perfect way to introduce someone to star wars and really pull them in. I'll never forget when I saw Empire Strikes Back. At that time I was like 2nd grade in elementary school probably. I wasn't used to seeing heroes get their butts kicked by the villains. Usually in good versus evil films the heroes typically win. I honestly thought Han was dead! And Luke gets his hand hacked off! That was different for me.

Yeah, Sparta, wasn't that an awesome trek film? I thought the series was done, I mean what else could they come up with? But hey, they actually pulled it off, man:) One of the stronger trek films for sure.

@want-to-see-prometheusNOW! - Yea, That J.J. Abrahms is some kinda great new movie maker. @Membrane Me too, a lot, that guy did a great job on that thing and the ending of that film was spectacular for it's time. Kirk Douglas and Amy Irving and Cassavettes were all fantastic in it, as was the rest of that all start cast like Charles Durning, and even Darryl Hannah had a bit part in it.

Spartacus, since you like the Ontological scene in 2001, this is for you (start around 4:40) - Piece Process - My Mind Is Going That song samples 2001, while others were written specifically because of a great sci-fi movie, like these... Covenant - The Replicant Front Line Assembly - Replicant

Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

@Biehn_Bandit I think it was you that mentioned The Thing first. I was a big fat John Carpenter fan growing up and all of his films had something, even if just a small thing, that was groundbreaking. His vision for the Thing IMO made it one of the Top 3 Science Fiction Films overall, ever made. The theater experience ONLY enhanced what was already a near perfect modern science fiction horror film. and it paid due homage to the original as well. Great Choice!

@ Spartacus re: The Fury - Everyone remembers the head exploding scene in Scanners, but I think that ending in Fury was the original, and way more intense...

I cannot express How much I love that movie "HybridVigor", so much so I made my father, Mother, and Brother see it with me and They actually all loved it too, it was a "funky way cool flick" back in the day...I think it still is today and the telekinesis scenes in particular I loved the best.

That film "OUTLAND" with Sean Connery had a whole "BladeRunner" feel to it and came out before "BladeRunner" did it not?

So so many for me, its hard to tell. I am someone who does not have favorites in anything really, i never had one stand out favorite Wrestler, never had one stand out Movie/TV Babe i had a crush on etc. off course Aliens Franchise is there, but so too is Terminator and in both some of the movies are not as good as the others... i.e Alien/Aliens Rocked, Terminator and Terminator 2 also. I feel the Aliens that followed where more of a disapointment than the Terminators that followed. For me Star Wars has to be up there, maybe at the top but again while SW 4-6 was great 1-3 had some good and some not so good parts. But i guess thats what happens when you make a sequel or even prequel, it has a hard task living upto the Orginal.... Even Reboots dont quite work either, Star Trek and Nightmare on Elm Street just again could not live upto the orginals. There are many other movies i liked to many to list really, but include The Thing, i also liked the Black Hole and many many others, inc Flash Gordon i could go on and on. But yes i guess that Predator, Star Wars, Alien/Aliens and Terminator have to rank really high in any list i could make.

Flash Gordon, now that's a classic... and it sure is Hard to argue with that entire T-2 film {extended ultimate nothing more could possibly be revealed edition}as the subject.

@Spartacus, That metal-clad T2 ultimate extremo edition is totally sweet. ------------ Just because I don't think I've seen any listed on this thread yet, here's some anime.
Black Heaven - Middle-aged family man and former guitarist in the heavy metal band Black Heaven is recruited by a space army to use his guitar-shredding skillz to active an enormous weapon used to fight interstellar aliens.

Serial Experiments Lain - Shy technophobe high-schooler gets her first NAVI (handheld computer) and accesses "the Wired" (the internet) for the first time. Subsequently learns the true nature of herself. Cyberpunk, trippy, psychedelic, weird, awesome. Full of WTH-ery and head-exploding qualities in general.

Akira
Fall down seven times, get up eight.
