MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:19 PMI don't know who on this forum started using the word "ampule" to describe the urn-like canisters (or any other containment vessel seen in the movie Prometheus), but it's got to stop because it's as annoying as it is ignorant. Clearly this has gone viral because many are following the lead lemming off the cliff.
The word "ampule' has a very specific meaning. An ampule is a small, hermetically-sealed vial having a rubber lid through which a hypodermic needle is inserted for the purpose of drawing up liquid contents for subsequent injection. It is not a general term to describe any container.
There are no ampules shown anywhere at anytime during the Prometheus trailer. The canisters seen in the temple are very, very far away in size, structure, and function from what an "ampule" actually is.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:26 PMi dont agree 100% ...the ampule or better i think ampoule ( in italian is the same word ) is also used in electricity ..and the shape is quite similar to the one we see in prometheus ( expecially in some electric things ) . I can agree that URNS should be a more precise word .
( i can agree that people use some stupid words without knowing the mean , i see on chats that many women use the word "hun" like "honey" "dear" ..forgetting that the Huns were a savage population from the east and that the "huns" were also defined the german soldiers of WWI )

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 7:33 PMThe World Famous Merriam Webster Company and it's Dictionary division define the word as follows...
Ampule
Variants of AMPULE
am·pule or am·poule also am·pul
1: a hermetically sealed small bulbous glass vessel that is used to hold a solution for especially hypodermic injection
2: a vial resembling an ampule

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:04 PMHey hold your horses Ladies and Gentlemen....please! :) I must say I respect Jacques Strappe for he must be a hard-core fan of Alien. I admire his dedication to detail. And I don't think he was rude of any kind. He just respects the history of this movie very much. So...respect. I also like that little cat-dog fighting between us cause it proves nothing more than we are truly great fans of Alien and strong personalities as well, hard at defending our arguments....By the way..since dictionary is of the issue, does anyone of you really know what Prometheus means? Since I am Greek, let me give you perhaps a cool insight...Prometheus is derived from the Greek word Prometheia wich means Supply...So Prometheus is the Supplier...the supplier of fire of the Gods to mankind. I am not showing off...just trying to calm down things a little.!:)

@Golic
John (pointing at the sun): Look! It's a jellyfish.
Mary: Huh? That's not a jellyfish, that's the sun. A 'jellyfish' is a slimy invertebrate that lives in the sea. It's a radically different thing than the sun.
Constealltion88: There goes Mary, splitting hairs again!
Golic: Mary is a huge nerd!
@belladonna
Word definitions have nothing to do with grammar. Poor grammar is forgivable in forum posts. A complete misunderstanding of word meanings is not. Your complete misunderstanding of the word 'grammar' would be a good example here.

lol, It could be that I reflected a tone subconsciously that I did not mean to but if that were the case my excuse would be that I am paranoid around references to Nazi's even when made in good natured fun, being Jewish and all, lost most if not all of my relatives in the 2nd WW.

he obviously is, im wondering if there is a little bit of a language/cultural barrier that doesnt make it so apparent that he is being an asshat trying to insult a mass amount of people.
textbook narcissism, usually from having many personal short comings that they havent found a healthy way to deal with.
obviously uses the internet as an outlet to take their frustration out on random anonymous people to make themselves feel superior.
its sad really, usually such a pompous attitude annoys me but now i just feel sorry for him, probably doesnt have any close friends to talk to for help.
:( poor guy.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:17 PMIf I'm not mistaken, Ridley Scott used the term "ampule chamber" in an interview with Empire magazine. That's where that term for those things originated.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:19 PMOk! That's it ...I'm calling sir Ridley to have the movie released by tomorrow...That would fix things right between us right? :)))

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:27 PMWhy RS keeps using that word, I don't know. It is a very particular term to choose when he could use urn, jar, etc; not exactly random I would think. I'll be interested to see how his use of the word actually relates to what is in those things.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:27 PMThe use of ampule in this context @Jacques Strappe has more to do with the likely biological or chemical contents of the "containers" we see in the ampule room.....to paraphrase Spartacus' definition....a hermetically sealed, bulbous vessel that is used to hold a solution.....the likely contents of those ampules contextually justifies the use of the term in this case....I'm sorry friend, but I don't think your reasoning justifies the argument or your tone.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 8:51 PMTechnically, an ampule is a completely closed glass container.
What you're describing--with the rubber seal on the top--is a "vial."

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:12 PMThis is an ampule:

The key feature is that the top is actually part of the bottom. That is, the top is actually broken off before you can access the contents.
If the term originated with Ridley Scott and we assume that he knows what an ampule is, perhaps these vessels share this feature--perhaps they are hermetically sealed and must be broken to access their contents. But an ampule is typically only big enough to hold about 1-3 mLs of volume so it's rather odd to refer to something orders magnitude larger using this term.
People who are taking this personally are way off base. I mean no offense to anyone.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 9:39 PM@Jacques Strappe ...
Mate ... it's Science 'bloody' Fiction ... it's NOT based on FACT ... it doesn't have to be ... plus this is an ALIEN world we're dealing with ... what's to say their AMPULES are not different? ...
You're not offending anyone ... and we're not taking it personally ... you're just rubbing some up the wrong way ... that's all ...

I admire your attention to rational precision.
However, as a result of that self-same quality, you may find it is part of your destiny to be misunderstood - if you haven't found it the case, already.
@Gem]n[
Without prejudice to you, you have moved me to point out that, on the contrary, good Science Fiction is, very much, based in Fact - and it is, from that basis, that it looks toward Fantasy.
It is that firm basis, in Fact, that informs our acceptance of it's overall plausibility.

AdminPraetorianApr-14-2012 10:41 PMThe "Ampule" are probably contained IN the protective canisters/urns, in any case Ridley was the one who started calling the place "the ampule room".
"An ampoule (also ampul or ampulla) is a small sealed vial which is used to contain and preserve a sample, usually a solid or liquid. Ampoules are commonly made of glass, although plastic ampoules do exist.
Modern ampoules are most commonly used to contain pharmaceuticals and chemicals that must be protected from air and contaminants. They are hermetically sealed by melting the thin top with an open flame, and usually opened by snapping off the neck."
Here is a real ampoule, filled with a substance called Cesium:
Here is David8, pulling what looks like 4 connected "ampoule" out of the protective urn:
As far as size goes here is another one containing Cesium and it is huge:

As you can see from the picture's caption, it was TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX who started using the word "ampule" in one of the very first official promo pics they released for Prometheus.
If you want to quibble over semantics, maybe you should write the studio a letter. Besides, we still don't know that the urns in the "ampule room" aren't full of, you know ... ampules.
Here's the URL if you want to check out a bigger, more easily readable version of the picture.

MemberOvomorphApr-14-2012 11:16 PM@Jacques Strappe:
The term "ampule" was first used by Ridley/Fox when describing the early stills from the film which were released late last year (referring to the one particular interior shot as the "Ampule Room."
It did not originate on this forum.
(EDIT: Whoops, didn't see the post right above mine - nvm)
