On the David overview it mentions that he has twice the neural net capacity of humans. Like any AI it's only a matter of time before it becomes self aware and ignores any programming it may have been given.

David might have just been a convenient name that started with D. The previous synthetics in the Alien series were named Ash, Bishop and Call... A, B, C. Who knows?

Speaking of AI. Remember at the end when they find David at the bottom of the ocean? He turns out to be a flagship model of robots that has captured the imagination of future robots. The futuristic robots are far more advanced and have created a new culture of their own. The human race has long since been extinct. Have you ever wondered why the Derelict is so sterile and cold? Or why the new glimpse of the Temple and the giant humanoid sculpture feels so cold? Perhaps it's because the space Jockey race is actually the evolution of synthetic life. Contrasted to the human race in Alien where there are pictures of pornography on the walls, humans are requiring sleep, food, and many other attributes that make the human race warmer and more organic....
