MemberOvomorphApr-29-2012 2:34 PMIn some round about way I'm thinking the Engineers in Prometheus will symbolically represent a potential evolutionary pitfall of man if he continues down the path of cold-hearted scientific progress at the expense of humanitarian values (such as compassion). In many ways Weyland Industries and specifically Weyland himself represent this attitude as it exists within our society today (and the near future) as corporate ambition/imperialism at the expense of such values (same theme is present in "Alien"). Subsequently its quite clear that a parallel is being drawn between Weyland Ind. and the Engineers (think terraforming) that is going to be the driving force behind this movie. This is why thematically it would be interesting to see Peter Weyland (if he is in fact still alive) mutate into an engineer as it would further illustrate this parallel between them. I don't think this movie is Ridley Scott trying to reinforce the case that Aliens spurred our evolution forward (though its quite clear that he believes something to this effect) but is instead intelligently using this as a plot device propelling the actual themes.

MemberDeaconApr-29-2012 3:40 PMWell i guess we dont know for sure, it would seem that he is using this kind of story as a back bone and the Prometheus Myth.
I think he is implying that in the Aliens Universe that the Engineers or someone leaving clues from that system played a part in the creation and evolution of man.
Thats not of course to say thats what happens in real life or what Ridley beleaves, as its just a Sci Fi plot after all.
As far as mankind well mankind has always been evil, its not science thats corupted mankind, before that riches, land and religon has also corrupted and caused man to want to destroy others and pillage.

MemberOvomorphApr-29-2012 4:38 PMIf a Corporation had the chance to harvest technology millions of years advanced from ours, what lengths WOULD they go through to succeed? As Ridley said, technology that far advanced from ours would appear god-like. How would we interact with such a species? Could we interact?
Should we?
And as far as the set design of the interior of the ship, discussed on another thread, I do believe that it is built to transport a 'king.' Further proof to me that Weyland is on the ship. And Vickers his personal chaperon and heir, if not his daughter altogether. She would know what he would want with such technology. And she might not be inclined to give it to him...
