I think the black oil is just a substance that the snake thing swims through...the other material that pools in the one shot is related to those tiny black jumping bean looking things David is interested in...

I agree and the big hole in the floor with the trenches going towards it is a drain for the oil.

Looks like the urns exploded, they show black oil? Also same black stuff can be seen when David pulls out the content of the urn on the ship.

Yeah, the dancing black debris David smiles at, [i]is[/i] intriguing. It could be vibration, electromagnetics, a gravity effect....Sj jumping xeno beans.......who knows? This movie is going to be so awesome. I really don't think anyone will enjoy it more than the old-timers. ;-)

i just read a theory, that the cobra-hugger (new iconic moniker - love it) evolved from the black liquid that seems to have oozed out of those damn mysterious urns meaning, the liquid is self evolving, it does remind me a bit of the great X-Files: Fight The Future @artyoh: i am one of those old-timers, and i am in TOTAL awe of this new film, my heart pounds faster with every new and cool image i see, and yesterday was no exception
