It Came from Outer Space was director Jack Arnold's first science fiction film for Universal studios. It Premiered in 1953 and was the first 3-D film on wide screen with stereoscopic sound. Arnold said..."I think science fiction films are a marvelous medium for telling a story, creating a mood, and delivering whatever kind of social message should be delivered." Based on "The Meteor" by Ray Bradbury, the film features a "crash landing" near a small town in the Arizona desert of a spaceship that looks like a meteor. John Putnam, an astronomer played by Ricard Carlson is the lone witness, but because a landslide has covered the spaceship in a crator, the townspeople refuse to believe him. THE ALIENS IN THIS FILM ARE CALLED "XENOMORPHS" AND DEPICTED AS ECTOPLASMIC BEINGS WHO ARE ABLE TO ASSUME THE IDENTITIES OF OTHERS, BUT IN THEIR NATURAL STATE THEY LOOK LIKE GIANT, PEELED EYEBALLS FLOATING INSIDE PLASTIC GLOBES, lunging out of the screen and into the audience in 3D. Shots of the townspeople are from the point of view of the aliens, thus the people appear on screen through a shimmering eye like bubble. The Aliens assume the identities of the townspeople so they can repair their ship unnoticed but they mean no harm. They just want to fix their spaceship and be on their way after returning the citizens to their original forms. That take other identities because they are afraid of what humans will do to them. Eventually the town's people catch on and attempt to destroy the aliens, but Putnam protects the aliens in the final confrontation, explaining... "THEY DON'T TRUST US BECAUSE WHAT WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND WE DESTROY" AND AT THE VERY END, THE TOWNS PEOPLE GATHER AROUND PUTNAM WHO THEN SAYS... "IT WASN'T THE RIGHT TIME FOR US TO MEET, BUT THERE WILL BE OTHER NIGHTS, OTHER STARS FOR US TO WATCH, THEY'LL BE BACK" I find all of this fascinating for several reasons but the thing that inspired this post was this image...of... An Ectoplasmic "Xenomorph" !!! Created 26 years before I even falsely assumed and for 33+ years now that Brandywine and Ridley Scott Invented that term. Here are some other stills from that film. It was the fashion back then for Sci-Fi films to use scientific terms to explain the unknown, much like the scene in War of the Worlds when they examine the snake head extension. hence in the film you mention they use the term Xenomorph, which we should know means Alien Form.

Interesting, and yet, I still found, finding all this out for myself so very fascinating, because the term "Xenomorph" had in fact been widely used in film prior to Alien. I had No idea of this...I knew nothing.

Actually the term "Xenomorph" was never once used in the franchise until Cameron's follow up "Aliens": HUDSON Hudson, Sir. He's Hicks. GORMAN What's the question? HUDSON Is this going to be a stand-up fight, Sir, or another bug-hunt? GORMAN All we know is that there's still no contact with the colony and that a xenomorph may be involved. I always wondered.. how many other "bug hunts" had Hudson and co. been on? He made it sound oh-so-routine, Hudson seems to know what a xeno is "Yep, it's a bug hunt" I always wondered what that was all about.. I think that was the only time the term "xenomorph" was used in those first two movies.

@ msepsis... Yes, in regards to the Alien franchise Aliens was the first film to use the term Xenomorph, but the term was also used in the 1953 film "It Came from Outer Space", which is what this thread is about.

acquired this film within ten minutes and was watching it just now and immediately paused it after 10 minutes to come in here and tell you guys who love film how incredible this film is, how it reeks of class, even for a 1953 film, right from the beginning. And I would not have said this accept I realized it was my love for ALIEN, Dan O'Bannon and Ridley Scott & H R Giger that has lead me to discovering this film today for the first time and because of Prometheus and all of you. As it turns out, We all really are part of something special here.

WATCHED THE REST OF THIS AND IT WAS JUST AWE INSPIRING TOO SEE HOW FAR SPECIAL EFFECTS HAVE EVOLVED NOW !!! GREAT STORY AND GREAT DIALOGUE FOR A FILM FROM THE 50'S WHICH ACCURATELY REFLECTS ATTITUDES OF THOSE TIMES TOWARDS WHAT IS ALIEN TO US AND ANYTHING UNKNOWN.
