Define "spoiler" :-)

MemberFacehuggerMay 03, 20121620 Views23 RepliesOkay, so I'm somewhat making a joke starting this thread, but I know this is a serious topic for many. I think the trouble is "spoiler" means so many things to so many people. For some, it seems to be any vague basic aspect of a story (this probably isn't the forum for you).
What is your definition?

To some it can be anything, any detail at all (the Prometheus is a scientific research vessel). Quite a few people like to go into a film completely cold, and let the film explain everything to them.
To me a spoiler is something more significant. A major plot point, a twist, a picture of a creature, the death of character X, that sort of thing.

We have to start to talk about this again and again ??... if you are in doubt if you are posting a spoiler or not ( something that can reveal an important plot part to everyone ) just write SPOILER in the title ( without of course revealing the spoiler itself )
There is no need to make a drama of it from both sides ...just use brain and respect .

I would define spoiler as one of the following.
1) A thread that has parts of the plot, information, especially when backed up with hard evidence (like the callcard thread). Or information about the movie and its plot that has not been given my Ridley or his writting staff in any interviews.
2) Scenes and images that are from the movie that are not shown in any trailers (especially leaked ones not released by Ridley or Fox or any related Viral Campaigns. That can potentially give away important parts of the movie. Now some images wont be classed as such but any that show a important event or that would cover the death or out come for some important members of cast.
3) Any obscure detail from maybe a image or trailer released officially that than has a still blown up that may then give away a massive part of the plot or the outcome to one of the important members of cast, in paticular how/when they die.
Now for me the most important members of cast are Shaw, Holloway, David, Vickers and Weyland. These are the main characters in the movie.

OMG do we have to keep talking about this? Are you trying to be a passive aggressive troll? lol
For the record , I agree with both Frantz and BigDave. The main thing is to keep in mind you're part of a diverse community, so use common sense/courtesy, and respect.

I agree with all of you and your definitions. Like I said, I was somewhat making a joke by starting this thread. This is clearly a very touchy subject, but when you are on forums like these, you have to know there's a chance you will come across a "spoiler".

A spoiler is *NOT* - a sentence or paragraph that begins with "I think that....", "I believe that...", "My thought is.." or any variation thereof...

When your refrigerator breaks and can no longer keep food and freeze items. It becomes a spoiler. :)

And thats a good point Franz....
If someone gets a image or information thats backed up with fact and hard proof and it relates to the plot they need to be carefull what title they use.
Lets say i find a scene or some hard proof that gives away these plots (these are made up just examples).
1) Shaws Baby Squid either laying a Egg, or Face Hugging a member of the cast....
You dont go and post "SPOILER SHAWS BABY FACE HUGS AND IMPLANTS VICKERS"
You go and put "WARNING! SPOILDER SHAWS BABY FACE HUG SCENE"
Or a leaked scene of the Derelict landing on LV426 or scene that shows the Cargo and from that 8 min scene at the end and shows what caused it to land.
we dont want to be putting "SPOILER DERELICT SCENE FROM END OF MOVIE INC XENO ATTACK AND CHEST BURSTER"
Putting "WARNING SPOILER LEAKED DERELICT SCENE FOOTAGE LV426"
We have to be even more carefull with the cast deaths or events especially the main ones. So what if Ford dies its not important, we can assume she, Janek and Milburn die. Most will but maybe not know when.
So if i had proof that say Shaw cuts Holloway to bits with Axe.
Then you dont make title "SPOILER HOLLOW KILLED BY SHAW WITH AXE"
You put "WARNING SPOILER REGARDING HOLLOWAY ATTACKED"
Thats a tricky one as someone could think oh attacked like by Cobra and click on it and then see Shaw Chopping him up, thats a spoiler the viewer would not have known would be under that thread. But then if you put HOLLOWAYS DEATH maybe that would be better, it would then spoil fact that he dont survive but being honest the only characters who from story and trailers etc that you could assume to survive are Vickers, Shaw and maybe David and Weyland.
I gues the only true way of dealing with spoilers is.
1) Dont come to the site.
2) If there was a Spoiler Section.

End of the day maybe what i put the other day is a spoiler... when i did some piecing together of clues, after finding the cast list and thus who plays the Jockeys and the simularities of one small actor face compared to Statue and Water Fall guy, latter someone then posted a thread from a French Magazine that said about the Engineer actors roles and that the face of one actor is used when we see Engineers face, and in scene when Engineer on own, but it uses two taller actors when the Engineers are in scenes with Humans.
But i dont think its a massive one as its all in official interviews and cast lists and we all know (well some dont) that the Jockeys and Engineers will bare some resemblence to that Statue head. And Mural Guy/Water Fall guy.
But i think the spoiler the other day, from a still from a scene in the movie that someone with keen eye would spot a body of a important cast member that then confirms this scene to be their end. Well while its ok to post trailer i did think when a section of a still from that is blown up and then hilighted the said cast members body etc, is a big spoiler.

RickK you are right.
@Nate - I see you smiling over there! This is getting quite comedic. lol

Liam Gallagher....or anything about a film AFTER it is released....you can't spoil something you don't know everything about....no matter how smart you think you are....or think somebody else might be.

As annoying as this thread may be, it is needed. Some people don't know what is considered a "spoiler". Simply saying "When in doubt, just add a spoiler warning" doesn't cut it.
For one reason, there may never be any "doubt". If uneducated in the term "spoiler", the poster may post a spoiler without even knowing its a spoiler ("doubt" never comes into play).
For another reason, if someone is not sure whats a spoiler ("in doubt"), than they'll just put a spoiler warning on everything which becomes even more annoying than reading this thread, LOL.

@Frantz, @Syphonox
Unfortunately, your recommendations assume the presence of things that appear most notable for their frequent absence.

is there any proof that the waterfall guy (i've only seen the back of his head in the trailer) ever becomes a blue guy, or is the same actor as a blue guy?
