Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub of Collider.com landed an exclusive interview with Fox CEO Tom Rothman at CinemaCon last week. Rothman talks Prometheus and other Fox assets. But of course, I'm just gonna include the Prometheus parts only. http://collider.com/tom-rothman-wolverine-prometheus-daredevil-interview/162819/ Fox CEO Tom Rothman Talks 48fps, Fox’s Formula for Quality Films, THE WOLVERINE, PROMETHEUS, CHRONICLE 2, DIE HARD 5, Comic Book Movies, More Rothman: [For] Prometheus, it would have been very easy—in fact probably in Chapter One of the Executive Handbook, if I ever read such a thing, it would say, “Go ahead, make a straightforward prequel to Alien.” That would have been the easy thing to do. Prometheus is the more challenging thing to do. It’s bolder, it’s original, it’s in the universe, but it’s not a literal story-based prequel to [Alien], it’s a wholly new science-fiction entry from Ridley Scott, who hasn’t made a science-fiction film in 30 years. So I think what we tried to do in recent years is listen to the audience, believe in the audience, and don’t underestimate the audience. Believe that the audience wants to be challenged and try to push the boundaries, try to be original. When asked about what rating Prometheus will get: Rothman: I don’t know, but I do know this: it will be whatever is best for the film. So I can assure the fans—I’m very aware of their concern—absolutely they can take it that the film will not be compromised either way. So if that means that the film is R, then it’ll be an R. If it’s PG-13, then it’ll be a PG-13, but it will not be compromised. People can rest assured. --Viscal

"So I think what we tried to do in recent years is listen to the audience, believe in the audience, and don’t underestimate the audience. Believe that the audience wants to be challenged and try to push the boundaries, try to be original." Now that is something you don't expect from Hollywood.....that's what I want to hear.....

i dunno if you you noticed this, but well... 1. The "risk taking" he first describes is both (a) cushioning his fall, if it should fail (i.e., "hey guys, at least I was brave enough to take a risk!") and (b) redounding to his benefit if it should succeed ("hey guys, I took a risk, and see how awesome it turned out") 2. his promises as far as the audience is concerned are (a) both good business (if you're happy, the studio is happy), but (b) probably not going to have anything to do with the quality of the final product or the rating it receives, sorry. Elected officials get elected and don't follow through; do you think the PR-talking head of a studio is going to talk it up, even if he can't deliver? of course! And will he break his promise if necessary? Of course. So, yes, pure doublespeak. My only question is why even bother to interview him? To get nonsense back?

I agree with the doublespeak notion. One thing I am a lil to tired to remember at the moment is , are different versions of films still shown in different countries? First that comes to mind is Jaws 4< yeah I know> where a certain person that was indeed dead randomly floats to the surface alive in the UK version. To get to the point , I see that Prometheus is getting a rated r US equivalent in other territories, would they make a different cut for our shores? We All know that CEOs never speak a meaningful word ever :)

We will never really know if we got (will get) the "actual product", especially if the DVD version doesn't contain unrated material. Worse scandals have happened and folks never, ever know. Real-life example, During the early-to-mid 80s the Pope visited Miami (where I lived). An assassination attempt was made but it never hit the media. I happened to know because my Scout Master was a volunteer police-officer who knew a lot of the details. Nobody will ever know that it happened.

Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

False positives in my opinion ... I just hope Ridley has his say in the matter because to me that counts more than anything the Studios can ever say ... yeah I know Fox controls the 'spice' but it would nice, just FOR ONCE, to let the paying audiences have a little word in the matter ... we will see if what Rothman says stays true to form ...

The paying audience? Are you referring to the 'unwashed masses'? We are nothing but rodents running in fixed place inside a hamster wheel. Let's not kid ourselves....

I see it like this: Fox are the generals and Ridley is an old sergeant major. Even though the generals far outrank the noncoms, the experience of the sergeant major is to be taken very seriously. Fox may have a hand in how this all goes down, but I think that Ridley the old veteran will get his way when push comes to shove...and in turn make us all very happy with the end product....win the war if you will.
ALL generalizations are WRONG!

Well the movie is not out yet and hasn't made any money.. What do you think all of the other movie executives are thinking now about what kind of movie can be released and the mannor in which to release them. Hopefully after this movie is released we will see a whole new branch of great sci fi movies. The guys at Warner Bros. Pictures must be messing in their pants right now..

So the rating it will get will be the one that's best for the film. That's a huge relief?

I believe that the film will need to be solidly rated approx. two weeks prior to release at the minimum. The ratings board have this on the top of their stack, I'm sure. They probably already gave it a preliminary rating which the studio doesn't like and have asked for an appeal. The reason I know this is because I watch a lot of commentaries and documentaries where such things are discussed (the back and forth "negotiations" between the studio and the Motion Picture Ratings Board). It's just my gut feeling that they are in appeal mode right now have another set of panelist review the film for their opinion. I imagine that the studio would love to have this R-Rated film slip under the radar as a PG-13. T'would be to have their cake and eat it too, so to speak.

So, are they just going to wait until the final moment to release the rating??
