MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:06 AMOr a '15'? Just reading a load of posts on Hysterical IMDB about
'soft R' (what?? God, ratings within ratings within bags in bags).
I still can't see a concrete confirmation on the R rating even amidst
all the buzz which, admittedly has had me caught up in it too. But
I need to ground myself here, lol.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:24 PMRuth, I'm with you there about IMDB - it is a silly place, to quote Monty Python's thoughts on Camelot, filled with idiocy beyond imagining. I have totally and utterly abandoned it.
Thanks all, for your responses, I'm gearing up for it to be a 15 over here then.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:13 AMTo my knowledge, R is the equivalent of 15 in the UK. All the Alien movies are rated R in the US and 15 in the UK. Additionally, on my IMAX ticket (UK) it says 15.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:24 AMThanks NoXWord, that pretty much settles things for me then.
The little number '18' on the poster over here would've been an extra flavoursome icing on the cake though, lol.
Still, I'm gonna love it and that's that.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:24 AM'R' can be equivalent to 15 or 18 in the UK depending on the content.
Also, back in 1979, Alien was released with an X rating in the UK; this is only suitable for people of 18 years or older.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 3:38 AMWhen Alien Directors Cut was re-released in the cincema it was 15 opposed to it being available on DVD at classification 18. I wander if they will do the same with Prometheus.
It appears to be all about the money, money, money.........

MemberDeaconMay-08-2012 5:23 AMWe have to remember the differences in UK and US ratting systems.
I feel the US one is Flawed because many films can be too much for a PG-13 and while they may be suitable for say 15 or 16 year olds as the US does not have anything close to that, they have to go with a R
I feel the US need to add another certificate that falls between a PG-13 and R
With the UK we are lucky as we have 12A, 15 then 18.
So many movies like Predators, American Pies, the Sacha Baron Cohen movies (Ali G, Borat, Bruno and now the Dictator) these was all 15 in the UK but in the USA they are R and thus you have to be over 18 to go and see them.
So to see movies with say some scenes of Nudity etc you have to be 15 in UK but 18 in USA.... i guess just as Age of Concent is 16 UK and 18 USA.

Art DirectorMemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 7:11 AMIt all just makes me think of Scott's Matchstick men... there was a scene in Spearmint Rhino and how the certificate would be raised if the girls where topless
"BBFC ALIEN cert 15"
"BBFC ALIENS cert 18"
What the hell, surely Alien is way more scary and horrific... what you see and what you think... its all about your imagination and what very intense images you don't see other than in your head. Psychologically it is perfectly Edgar Alan Poe "That thing in the dark half seen, half imagined, totally alien"
I am not trying to insult anyone, the facts are the facts and my rant can't change that.
As the punks would say "Who censors the censors"!

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 7:55 AMIn our country R is equivalent to N16 (16 and older).
Also, it's such a good thing that none of you are complaining about this movie not being enough R and so on. I've read a couple of threads on IMDb and I was astonished by the stupidity of some people (or just trolls). When we thought this movie was going to be released as a PG13, trolls and other idiots were crying that this will ruin the movie. NOW when Prometheus has received R rating they're weeping that this movie will only be soft R. And then they're arguing that FOX submitted PG13 filmed version to MPAA and still got off with R and just decided to keep it this way. This is so stupid. I swear I'll never go back to that site.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 8:11 AMHi Ladies and Gents - just checked My Vue for Inverness - I know ... the hub of entertainment !! - and they are still to certify the movie - it's still shown as To Be Certified - I hope it's 18 but will be ok with 15.
Did I mention that I will be seeing the movie twice on Friday the 1st June? 2:50pm showing then 5:20pm?

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 8:12 AM@bigDave...I'm of the feeling that censorship is bad and it's the UK that has one too many classifications (it's the odd one out in Europe also). I would propose getting rid of the two tier adult offerings and just have 15 (or 16 in Europe). I'm a Brit living in the states and the R simplifies very well. You can also go to an R at any age if accompanied by an adult

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 9:58 AMI love how the description under the R-rating reads, "Sci-Fi Violence". So, it's sci-fi violence when you're being shot by a ray gun or eaten by a space monster, but it's regular violence when being gunned down by a human dude, or eaten by a lion or a tiger. Hmm...

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 10:59 AMDon't know about Prometheus yet, but to compare i checked cabin in the woods
here in Belgium it's KT (ALL) officially, and the theater adds a suggestion of, 12+.
Anyway, it's like a lot of stuff, give it an R, and all teens will want to see it even more.

MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 2:44 PMHi All
I am glad for the potential 15 rating here in the UK - although 12A rated films manage to push things quite far nowadays, after seeing the launch trailer on Channel 4 last weekend, I knew immediately there was no way it was going to be a 12A - could you imagine some parent taking their 5 year old to see it! You wouldn't be able to hear the film for all the crying! Wish I was being sarcastic - I was working in a cinema when The Dark Knight was out - had so complaints from parents that it was too violent etc for a 12A - well, it wasn't our decision!! The R rating in the US COULD impact its box office take - the people of forums like this will have to make sure they go and see it more than once - even if it is a disappointment (I am sure it wont be) - if you want to see sci-fi of this type and scale again, people need to go and see the film - lots of times - that is how Avatar, Hunger Games, Avengers etc make huge money - repeat viewings - one viewing will not cut it. It needs to make at least 100 million at the US box office on opening weekend - I think it will do great internationally anyway. I am off work for a week from June 1st so plan to see it at least twice opening day then if it is great have no qualms on seeing it every day!!

reddy
MemberOvomorphMay-08-2012 7:31 PMIt seems it will be an 18 in Spain, and I've read that the US version has blood which is toned down to near black so as to get the R rating. So fingers crossed that Europe gets red blood and perhaps the 18 certificate. Personally I'll be gutted if it's a 15. All the others were 18 until the latest releases. I have a video and dvd sets, both of which have all films as 18s.
The thing is, if it's a 15 then basically anyone will get in, people never get asked for proof of age unless they are obviously about 10. I really don't want to see this with a bunch of kids (I'm only 24 but still).
