David's "emotions".

David: Providing you're thesis is correct.
Holloway: Aahah, Providing it's correct?
David:(Smirking)That is why they call it a thesis, doctor.
Could this be a defect that developed while the crew were in hypersleep?

He doesn't sound defective or sarcastic to me - it just sounds like he's being precise.
If anything - and judging by the over-confidence and assumption revealed in just those 3 lines alone - I'd say it's Hollaway that sounds defective...

Fassbender said David develops emotions during the 2 year trip.
In every interview he gives he says that. :P

"Fassbender says he’s been imbuing the character with all the unrestrained emotion the script will allow. “I’m making him a very sort of vain and sort of patronising kind of character,” he explains. “There’s a massive ego within him, I’ve realised, because it’s open knowledge to him that he’s far more advanced than his human counterparts. In a response to their non-acceptance of him he develops a bit of a haughty sort of attitude around them. He likes to be right all the time.”

It could be that this model has characteristics of Weyland programmed in that have a slight sarcastic, holier than though persona that mimics Weylands own. I heard it somewhere that this David is not overly impressed with his makers and realises his vast superiority intellectually and physically. He struggles to express it whilst fulfilling his task of looking after everyone and doing "menial" tasks. I don't think it's representative of the David 8 series from the viral add they showed.

his mood in the star map sure looks emotional to me. I think there's more to his emotions than meets the eye ;)

Thats the whole point of the 8 model to understand and use emotions to make interaction smoother. He doesn't feel emotions, but two years for an AI is alot of time to think and question things. It was also brought up that he could watch the crews dreams through his visor.

Its poetic justice then, when he gets knocked the f*ck out by a space jockey. I know I'll be cheering.
