MemberOvomorphMay 14, 2012Please forgive me, I don't know the other previous posts that I have read people mention this but I know there has been some discussion concerning the Weyland Yutani timeline.
I recall reading some people arguing that "Weyland Yutani" was something that James Cameron had come up with and that the original film only references "The Company" or simply "Weyland Industries".
Well, I just got done watching "Alien" for the billionth (Give or take a million) time and at 4:19 into the movie, as the computer is kicking on getting ready to wake the crew up from their cryosleep, I distinctly read on the computer screen (And it is VERY VERY clear) this statement in the upper right hand corner of the computer screen:
"Ship:
Weylan [sic] Yutani
Nostromo 180246
Function:
Tanker/Refinery
Capacity:
200,000,000 tonnes
Galactic Position:
270/zRx883

@Sparty: Who was it (now deceased) we read that they put down a lot in regards to Alien? Something about his initial script being dreadful? I think you posted the .pdf article.
side note, Ridley Scott said he had a Japanese neighbor in the U.K. when he was growing up named Yutani or something very similar and that's where he got the name from.
It was Ron Cobb !
Hold 1 sec I'll get you the exact statement
“ One of the things I enjoyed most about Alien was its subtle satirical content. Science fiction films offer golden opportunities to throw in little scraps of information that suggest enormous changes in the world. There's a certain potency in those kinds of remarks. Weylan Yutani for instance is almost a joke, but not quite. I wanted to imply that poor old England is back on its feet and has united with the Japanese, who have taken over the building of spaceships the same way they have now with cars and supertankers. In coming up with a strange company name I thought of British Leyland and Toyota, but we couldn't use "Leyland-Toyota" in the film. Changing one letter gave me "Weylan," and "Yutani" was a Japanese neighbor of mine. ”

What is the exact time-marker(s) in Alien (1979) where you (anyone) see Weylan (or Weyland)?
Never-mind, I see where you posted it appeared on the screen at 4:19. I'll freeze frame the next time I put it in. Thanks@

Yeah, Cameron changed the name from Weylan to Weyland...for some unknown reason for ALIENS...at least unknown to me.

@allinamberclad:
Thank you very much for saying that! It wasn't until after I posted, read another thread and came back to this one that I realized, "Crap, I didn't make the connection I was trying to make!" So, thank you!
I was trying to say that, although some have suggested that Weyland Industries in Prometheus didn't have any connection to the Yutani Corporation until "Aliens" BUT as we can see from "Alien", there is some connection already early on. Especially considering the fact that the events in "Alien" occur a short time after "Prometheus".
So that connection must take place earlier than some people think. Do the events in "Prometheus" actually CAUSE the merger between the two companies? Does whatever happen to Peter Weyland in the movie (if anything at all, as some have speculated) lead to a merger to save the company? Etc.
Does that help to see my point a little better? I hope so. I'm really tired after having spent a week in Jackson Hole/Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park so my "well-formed" thoughts may be coming out as a jumble of verbal vomit rather than the slick way I'm imagining it to be.

@Neurion
I didn't know that. That IS interesting. The only thing I can come up with is that is seems more "natural" to say Weyland rather than Weylan. It's a bit simple as far as reasoning goes but that's my only guess.

It's actually easier for the Japanese to pronounce it without the "d."
Ue.I.RAN YU.TA.NI
But, as of Cameron and Aliens, it's:
Ue.I.RAN.DO YU.TA.NI
The name Yutani is literally "Warm-water Valley".

@Athy16
OK, now that works.
I'd say yes, it's interesting - to the degree that it's a pretty natural conclusion to come to if you wanted to retrospectively construct the Story?
That, somehow, the events of Prometheus/Weyland lead to or cause a merger...
What's significant and interesting is that, "how?"
May 14, 2012
@Athy16
There are theories that one or more members of the Prometheus crew might be spies for Yutani in Prometheus. There are roughly 20~30 years of time between the events of Prometheus and Alien (1979) according to the Gregorian calendar.

@Athy16
What should be important to you is that your gut feeling for how the story could be constructed has validity - what could be very interesting for everyone, is what you imagine that Story could be?...

@sukkal WOW! I definitely want one of those beer cans! AND it DOES say Weylan!
@ Spartacus HOW DARE THEY fictionalize our fictional history!

@abordoli
FYI, there's also another computer reference in Alien to Weylan Yutani at 15:04 as they're coming in for a landing on LV-426. Right when Ripley says the word "Turbulence" there is a computer screen shot with the company name at the bottom of the computer screen, along with "Nostromo" and the ship's registration number.
This one isn't as clear as the earlier screen shot but it is still there.
