Narcissus
MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 6:17 PMBeing a rabid Alien fan I have been reading the original Dan O'Bannon scripts and looking at the original Ron Cobb pre-production art. I noticed a passing resemblance of one of the the original derelict ship designs to the beautiful new Prometheus. After seeing the artwork once again over on another blog “Strange Shapes” article - Making ALIEN I: Script I am convinced there is a nod to Ron Cobb in the design of the bow and the "shoulders" (directly behind the bow) of Prometheus. Notice the similar arrowhead like shape of the bow and the hull segment directly behind the bow on the derelict (a yellow stripe to boot too)... and even though this is a relatively low-rez image it looks like there is a multi-paned glass cockpit / bridge at the very tip just like Prometheus.

Now flip the "Fireproof Windscreen" upside down and you have a portion of one of the original designs for the derelict ship. Thoughts?

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 6:23 PMThe Prometheus bridge IS inspired by his late 70’s design for the Nostromo bridge. They said so, somewhere...

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 7:19 PMI hear you Narcissus as I have made the analogy that some how the eagle mythology has been incorperated into the Prometheus' design when in 'flight mode' and I made a thread about it with regards to the ship having an Eagle-like ashtetic for its inspiration whilst in 'fligh mode'. I believe elements of both your hypothosis as well as my own were parts of the original brain storming conversation that perhaps went down during the inception stages of the Prometheus film project. I'm certain that in due course the Prometheus Bonus DVD Extras Disc will shed light upon this for you and me both.
Note in my own extrapolation with the Prometheus' thrusters swept back as is that of an Eagles wings in either the sitting position or in Dive-Bomber mode....

Note where I have encircled the 'Head' section of the Prometheus there is what looks like a port-hole window in the shape of an 'Eye', grey looking, almost like a swept-back little triangle if you think of it with the 'Eagle' shape around the Prometheus 'Head'.
Its a working theory of mine. Not that many are willing at this stage to follow the credibility of what I have suggested but in time we shall see!
Good observation on your part too! Well done for that!

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 7:25 PMnarcissus...I have been watching as many alien documentaries as I can find...and RS is totally allowing all that concept art for ALIEN to inspire the PROMETHEUS universe...and I love it. it is so cool that RS has kept this material relevent....thanks for sharing this

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 7:40 PMI sense that in part the Prometheus was in part a homage to that of Gigers original Turkey Burster painting in a very slim-line outer shape/overall shape sort of reasoning. A possible incorporation of your scenario, my scenario and Giger hints as well.
Its probable that these images and iconographies in a direct or indirect perhaps influenced the creators methodology of thinking in their approach to the project as perhaps nothing more than a starting-off point. Thats all. Just something to set it off with. A 'nugget' if you will...
Note the inverted position of the limbs upon the Turkey Burster at the extreme top right of the image and look at the Prometheus with its limb-like thruster 'appendages' in a swept back notion. Then take your eye to the Turkey Burster at bottom-right of the image then look again back up to the Prometheus ship in its swept-back position for in flight manueverability. It just feels as thought Ridley Scott and his team of creative designers are both making a nod to all these former themes, a homage in my observational opinion. As too whether there will be any signifigant 'impact' to the narrative and/or plot line as a result of these apparant hidden-in-plain sight visuals remains to be seen. I believe there is an element of truth to what I am hypothosizing here. Again, we shall see in time and due course...

A working theory still...
I do not wish nor intend to hijack your thread with my hypothetical scenario's of what may or may not happen in the films plot or what may go on through the creative minds whom worked upon this interesting project, its just your thread seemed relevant to my ideas and thought processes.
Thank you.

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 7:49 PMYou'd be hard pressed to find any sci-fi designers today who weren't heavily influenced by Cobb's work.

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 7:52 PMYes that is very true Takka. Very true indeed! Very good observation. Cobb is a brilliant thinker and designer.
