Egg chamber in Alien. In SJ ship or beneath it?

While reading the Alan Dean Foster novelization of Alien, Mr Foster makes multiple references that the egg chamber that Kane descends into in the original alien is below the ground level and not actually in the space jockey ship. For the longest time I wondered if the large egg chamber was part of the ship or perhaps a base beneath it. After watching the prometheus trailer for the first time yesterday I have a feeling this question will be answered since the jockey ship and a large underground base with retracting doors are shown. OF course I am assuming that prometheus does in fact take place on what will be known as LV426. What other info is out there which might help to shed light on this? Ultimately what i'm trying to discover is.... was the space jockey ship carrying the eggs as a bomber/terraformer or was the space jockey ship never intended to carry the eggs? Is everything we see in Alien the space jockey ship or are we also seeing a storage base as well? Granted all I have to work on is the novelization by ADF but then again in his version the facehugger had an glazed over eye so I don't know how canon this is. Is there any info form Ridley Scott about this regarding Alien?. Any help is appreciated.

I believe that the egg chamber is beneath the Derelict. Seeing that in the Prometheus trailer we see a Derelict ship rising from an underground "cavern", I think it could possibly be the same underground structure :)

I think it must be in the left side of the ship of SJ because you know when we enter SJ ship from backdoor, there seems to be a lot of posters of female SJs. So that can't be the place of egg chamber. So we have to wait until movie is released to confirm if it's right side of the SJ ship or the left side of the SJ ship.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

The egg chamber in the film "Alien" is definitely the inside of the derelict ship. If you notice in the scene where Kane descends into the chamber, the chamber has the shape of the ship and in fact the whole ship is hollow. In that scene you can see that the chamber curves as the ship curves too and there is a protrusion in the chamber at the same place as the outside of the ship. The SJ pilot chair room is at the top of the derelict ship. In a Prometheus trailer you can see a computer image of the hollow space inside of the derelict ship which confirms what I am saying.

I think we know that the eggs that are discovered by kane in the original film are actually on the ship. The burns on the floor next to the dead jockey may have indicated that the chamber was below the ship, but Darwin and further viewing of the film should make it pretty clear. Plus there is an interview where sir ridley scott addresses this himself.

This was answered definitvely recently in the interview in which he clearly ended 33+ years of speculation.
