MemberOvomorphMay-18-2012 11:49 PMIn anticipation of Prometheus with all the hype and expectation it got me thinking, wasn't "Alien" more of a sleeper hit at the time it came out? I was 10 when it came out and remember hearing it had a graphic scene (couldn't talk my dad into letting me see it) and doing well at the box office, but don't recall a big push or anticipation for "Alien"

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2012 12:06 AMI was 25 when Alien opened and to put it mildly, Ridley Scotts film slammed the world up side it's head....there was notice of it's coming, yes, but nothing like today. Very difficult to relate it's impact in its day..it literally was a gamechanger.
My knowledge of Alien before it opened was pretty typical I think.....read one review of it, saw a few carefully chosen pictures, saw the trailer a couple of times and that was really all...I went to the movies at least 3 or 4 times of month in those days.
I think I and most of the public thought that it was simply the latest space monster movie of which there seemed to be dozens...absolutely nothing to distinguish it. We were so so wrong.
Anybody thinks that Prometheus is spoiled by all thats been seen so far is wrong just as hard. Scott is as crafty as ever, never lost it.

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2012 12:11 AMI was nine when Dad took me to see it. I have no idea what it was about this movie that I HAD to go, but yep it was a game changer. Seems like the trailers were fairly bizarre for the times, but I don't think even that was it.

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2012 12:35 AMBy its nature, Alien could almost be called the anti-Star Wars film. It's fame grew slowly but steadily instead of Star Wars' run away success. Whereas Star Wars blew people away with upbeat exhilaration, Alien more shell-shocked audiences with mind-numbing terror. In Hollywood at least, lines were around the block for Alien's premiere. I think Ridley Scott made sure that Alien was everything Star Wars wasn't, right down to a stripped down musical score versus a bombastic operetta.
One main thing RS took from Star Wars and ran with was making sure spaceships had a "lived in" look and showed wear & tear (unlike the pristine sets of 2001 & Star Trek).

MemberOvomorphMay-19-2012 12:57 AMForever is right. All those here who think the movie has been given up in 10 minutes of clips are just wrong.
The problem is, all the speculation on here that people have taken as the movie plot.
I'm pretty damn sure there's gonna be lots of surprises and action we can't even imagine.
Gonna be lots of fun. I'll have my cocktail in hand first thing in the morning.
