The damage to the Monolith head

Well surely if the SJ's are responsible for the creation of multiple species then maybe we aren't the first species to investigate our "creators" or maybe something's happened there before which as you stated explains the running SJ "holograms." Now that I look at it there is a lot of damage, looks like it was a center piece in some huge fight or war, IMO.

Maybe they just suck at sculpting...

Could be that too, lol...it just seems that tho everything in the SJ tech has a bio slant to it, that this, being not so, has a decidedly, purposely damaged look..part of me just thought that it wasn't just for aesthetics. Surely I don't sit here hoping for a backstory to the damage as it would be wasted exposition...I was just curious. It's obvious we probably won't find this info out as the first we or the Prometheus crew even see it is in the state we all know it...that said, it would inspire just as much awe if it were pristine amongst the otherwise grim and unwelcoming environs...

It seems very damp in there. Age and water can be very detrimental to stone. I also think the SJs have taken over another culture's complex.

Since this is a movie/movie set, I am inclined to believe that it is meant to show that no one has been taking care of it. Maybe they're not around, Maybe they're scared to get near.

For a while I thought that it may have accumulated damage due to some incident that happened in that room millions of years ago.....well, maybe not millions of years, but a long time. Or maybe there's stuff in the environment that is aging it, stuff that others have already described above. Whatever the case, the cracks on the stone make it even more ominous.
