I think you're right on both counts: 1. some of the SJ space craft we see is ancient & obsolete, and some of more recent vintage; and 2. we see different models of a huge fleet incorporating both generalized craft & specialized craft.
Which is which is up for debate. Thought my bet is on the derelict having a freight/militarized purpose (bio-weapon cargo drop-off), not a science/exploration purpose.

that is a huge question in my mind as well @theEgg, I believe you nailed a great idea.
The saucer should be almost like a traveling "home" for their kind. It must have been proper to send him there to sacrifice himself by the whole community!
The Juggernaut and said Derelict surely are expedition craft, much like the Prometheus? I'm hoping this will be some what explained. We shall see...

If the scene we see at the beginning of the movie (with the engineer sacrificing himself to put life on said planet, maybe Earth) then we're talking about a ship design that is approximately 3.8 billion years older than either the derelict on LV-426 or the Juggernaut-about-to-become-a-heaping-derelict-yet-with-the-new-car-smell on LV-223.
In short, it SHOULD look nothing like the current design of the more recent craft. That's a lot of model years to roll out with more bells and whistles over a 3.8 billion year time span. I guess maybe around 2.3 billion years ago they passed a law to add seat-belts?

^Lol to your seat-belts

abordoli FTW. maybe to the engineers the saucer is a Ford model T. and the juggernaut/derelict is more of a hybrid :D
It's also possible that the idea of purpose of the vehicle comes into play, but i think abordoli has a good point with the span of time coming into play.

Think we are assumin the theory of evolution relates to this film etc?? we dont knows its 3.8 billion years older do we? could have been a more recent past??

The Juggernaught/Derilict is like there version of a scientific craft, where all the techno-stuff is done and used. It is like a suped-up version of Ash's science lab. So they may be for "local" space travel means where-as the "mother ship" looks as though it is their version of a cross-continental jumbo jet. Its big, bulky and stream lined enough for longer distance space travel. It gets you wondering and perhaps a clue of this has already been given of their society being ruled by a cast system. If not ruled then certainly it features within it. They may have more "craft" then we have seen on the clips and if there is more it would tie-in to the ancient engravings of civilizations who show what appears to bee aircraft in their jewelry, complete with wings and a tail rotor and others speak of a helicopter.
I wonder if Ridley Scott will somehow tap into the myth that Eric von Daniken suggested about the alien craft landing at the Plains of Nasca. We know now that those symbols on the groung are small, medium and large but in each culture around the world, where ever there is a temple and engravings, the engravings themselves near enough always have one or two or many that resemble space craft of some popular description.

I remember an older post here showing that the lines on lv223 looks like the ones on the big saucer. (where then it was suggested the big saucer is imbedded in lv223)
i'll try to find it, it had good comparison pics
edit: i'm sorry i couldn't find it, but i know isaw it here/

Your assuming that scene is on earth.how about it beiing on the sj home world thousands of years before prometheus. I rekon this movie will be about the fall of sj culture just as much as it involves the exploration of earth by that culture. The saucer may be a structure rather than a ship.

I actually wondered if the Saucer was a sort of planet terraformer, I mean it's damn huge. And as it got done terraforming, they dropped an SJ off to start the process. Lets be real, with the exception of LV-426, you dont see the Jockeys just dropping in on inhospitable planets without a plan or a terraformer.
