The reviews, while decidedly still mostly positive seem oddly split on Scott's new film, but as always we should look to history to get our answers. Remember both Alien and Blade Runner released to mixed reviews. It is ironic that some of the more negative reviews of Prometheus have critics mentioning the genius of Alien.. as when Alien was released it averaged a 2 1/2 star rating by most major critics who were not ready for the characters who were "stripped bare of any background and motivation". Blade Runner had a worst fate critically upon release and even did poorly at the box office. THUS we should really expect these mixed reviews and revel in them. Scott has always been visionary.. it is the very nature of an avante garde artist to be ahead of his time. Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life time...to his brother.

I still believe that there's no point in hoping that it might turn out to be a misunderstood masterpiece, drawing a parallel between it and Alien, or Van Gogh. High expectations a priori are unfair, but also this attitude towards a secret hope that we might discover later that it is a classic is unfair and in the end will not do any good to the movie. Time will tell if it's good or not, but we shouldn't be trying to illude ourselves, or pretend that it necessarily has to be Scott's best highlight. If I am going to like it or not it will be something personal. I only discovered later that Alien, my favourite movie, was identified as a historic landmark of cinematography. I'll let the same happen for Prometheus: my impression first, then I'll relate to anybody else and see if we agree or not. Cheers
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

@NoXWord I agree, I think we should all see the movie and then decide whether it's any good or not. People shouldn't alter their enjoyment of the movie just because of a review of previous expectations. Everyone should just watch the film and compare notes afterward :P.

ajrart : you're absolutely right about the critical histories of both Alien and Bladerunner. Gene Siskel panned it and re-reviewed it before his death. Bladerunner has had various endings and deleted passages inserted and only recently has it had anything like a "definitive edition." Either Time or Newsweek characterized Alien, at the time, as a movie about a beast with glistening metal teeth, a slathering maw, and an idiotic crew. One could probably plot out Alien in three to four short declarative sentences. Perhaps Prometheus will have several critical editions before it achieves its definitive cut, too. Thanks for the reminders, ajrart.

Look to history for the answers? Nope, watch the movie for the best answer. And the best answer is what YOU think of the movie!

i don't care about what reviewers say, I rarely agree with them. They are usually not the target audience. This is clearly a film for alien fans - nothing in it would appeal over any other tentacle-monster film. I have a specific complaint of my own. "we're going to show you the derelict!" "haha only kidding, you have to wait for the sequel!" its so contrived. its DUMB.
