This movie gets a 3/5 at the very most, and a 1/5 is not unfair
So many plotholes I can't even list them all. There are at least 3 massive plotholes that are stupid and make no sense
The good points are the CGI (some of the best I have ever seen), production design, cinematography and errr...thats it
The music is awful, and does not fit in the slightest, even ruins certain scenes.
Noomi was ok, nothing to write home about. Way overhyped
Fassbender was too good for this circus, he carries a lot of this film
And the stupid scientist that keeps touching the snake..not once..not twice, but three bloody times before it attacks, there isnt a facepalm image big enough

I don't have the time for analytical full review now but i will say that they could of got away with a pg 13 i think the r rating will give some some viewers an inflated expectation .
On the whole i thought it was great in places and poor in others not a masterpiece / classic by any stretch, but an entertaining sc fi film with some moments of dazzlement, and some moments of disappointment, and the dialogue was in places poor and some scenes hurried and lacked emotional weight in their execution .Then again there were moments visually speaking that were awe inspiring, a real mixed bag of pros, and cons, reminded me of the consensus of blade runner first time round when that was released and the love it, hate it, opinions that produced at the time. Maybe time and repeat viewings will bear its place in film history.
I for one am hoping there will indeed be a longer better cut to come on blue ray or am i just wishful thinking my score 7/10.

Bioshock - I've seen it twice - Jingles , is it possible that you've been so annoyed by the elements you didn't like whilst watching you've missed some of the positive elements?
PrenihilityJune 01, 2012
These "plot-holes" that you speak of. There's no such thing. And you can't penalize this movie for "plot-holes". You know why? Because this is the introduction to something big.
Plot-holes. My BUTT.
jinglesJune 01, 2012
looks like we are going to have a lot of u fanboys defending a bad movie
let me summarise plotholes:
How did the Shaw know the engineer was going to destroy earth? he was just taking off...how did she jump to that conclusion? she must be a telepath
Ejectable medical bay? oh gotcha, so cuddles can make an appearance again...what a natural progression
Medical Bed only configured for male despite being in Vickers chambers
Stupid scientist that touches snake 3 times, 1 time it hisses, 2 times it hisses aggressively....what does the moron do? yup...touch again
Fifield is there to study rocks...seems to have no interest in them
The whole Janek/Shaw convo...pointless
The movie ends with Shaw piloting a derelict with an android head...yup thats beliavable
The proto alien looks like a fucking Tim Burton clay model
PrenihilityJune 01, 2012
Woah, woah, woah. I'm not. I'm just giving a realistic response to all the folks that say it's filled with "plot-holes".
Hell, i haven't even seen it yet. But i'll accept things that are only presented as questions, because the movie is the first in a new series.
Your post came before mine by mere seconds: Fanboy? Me? Hell no. I hate fanboys, and everything the movie stands for.
Once i've seen it, i'll break it down, in the most brutally honest way. But am i going to criticize the movie for it's questions? Given the fact that it's a more densely layered universe, and thought-out movie than Alien?
No.
People only asked ONE question in regards to Alien, and we all know what it is...
Fanboys are the ones giving the movie a low score, and 9/10 of them compare the film to Alien. Which is laughable.
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
Were you paying attention - the star map showed the destination for the WMD payload.
The medical bay was always in the escape pod - the escape pod was Weylands quarters. WHere else would it go other than in the MAIN place in the ship - Weyland and his daughters private life vessel.
The configuration could be changed by David - he was expecing to send Shaw home to examine there. I presumed it was for Weylan. Weyland is a MAN,.
The scientist may have been a biology genuis, but an idiot. Most highly intelligent people have little common sense or street smarts. And he was certainly mesmerised by it as a biologist would be - curiosity killed the cat. No real surprise there, is there?
Fifield is socially awkward. Of course he is, he study's rocks.
The Janek Shaw convo point was about the danger of the craft and where it was headed and the likely outcome and what he was willing to do. Pointed.
It's sci-fi - how is the androids ability to understand the flying of the craft any different to any ther unbeleiveable element in any sci-fi movie???
It's a fucking proto-Alien with squid like elements covered in goo.

MelkorJune 01, 2012
There are plot-holes but not as many as you said. Did you pay attention?
- David tells her it's going to Earth
- The med-pod is configured for a man because of Weyland- the key reason the pod is there at all, obv
But yep, Milburn petting Cobralien is ridiculous though. The other issue is that they get lost in the first place- that's insane. How many PHDs/ degrees between them and they can't find their way home?!
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
Thanks Melkor.
The movie was NOT hard to follow at all. Although I have seen it twice.

The gunJune 01, 2012
I was slightly dissapointed, well worth a watch, and I do want to know more but, David as the talking head ruined it for me. It was comedy.
The space jockey was massive, build like the ultimate warrior dipped in emulsion and kicked the shit out of the humans in seconds, he should have picked them off one by one, we should have seen more of him.
When he died, I was gutted. ...
100% agreed on the hissing super strong space cobra - you run a mile if you saw that thing, then you'd catch you're breath and run another mile. He went to stroke it and it broke his arm, then destroyed him. (deserved)
jinglesJune 01, 2012
@melkor David says no such thing, nor does she see the star map as she runs away early...bad writing
David says to Shaw a space jockey is approaching the ejected Med-lab...again how? how does he know being a head on the floor?
Why does the space jockey want to kill Shaw so bad? kinda trivial no? u could think of an excuse, but its just not beliavable
The dialogue was piss poor
jinglesJune 01, 2012
oh another good one..How does Shaw know her baby will attack the engineer? "just die" How does she know it can move at all? or that it will attack? so fucking far fetched

Not_my_intentionJune 01, 2012
i have not seen the movie yet and dont want to get into this but just wanted to say, if you are a big enough fan of "alien" to join an entire website devoted to waiting for "Prometheus" then you are just as big of a "fan boy" as anyone else on here, so i don't want to see that kind of stuff on this site ok? besides we "fan boys" would not defend something just because its alien, most of us HATE resurrection, and a good amount dislike alien 3 so i don't see why someone would defend it just because they are a fan of the series, like really? if anything fan boys would hate on it more then it deserves. if it was really THAT bad, then it would have the same reaction as the star wars prequels, and it did not so i see a flaw in that logic. also, what plot holes? i did not see the movie yet, so i am just wondering.
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
David will have seen the Engineer go after her at the least - he could also understand the language (somehow - then again he's a super computer). Did he hear something from the Engineer? Who knows?
There was sill another craft to fly into the other ship or ships. When you have a fly buzzing around the house, even though you haven't been attacked you'll often swat it. It's just an irritant.
Guess Shaw was an irritant or even a threat.
Some of the dialogue was hammy, some of it was awkward, yes.
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
She saw it moving and was trying to get out of the door.
If you find that a movie is intolerably far fetched over that then you will have to stop watching movies. Almost every movie is far-fetched, even those based on real lives!!
jinglesJune 01, 2012
@karlo...oh no...dont play that line on me..there is a difference between fantasy and shitty logic
this is the latter..the story needs to make sense in it's own internal way...this is a boring story, confused and boring
better than Alien 3 by a small margin...on par with Ressurection...somewhere around that area
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
OK, that's fine. I thought the movie was about David - the whole story resonated around his 'feelings' (that he doesn't have) observing his own Engineers barbaric behaviour and this was echoed by the Engineer of his Engineers. I think there's a good story running throughout that the films window dressing is hung upon.
How you could say it's a boring story is as incomprehensible to me as the plot was to you.
The execution of the film wasn't perfect, sure - but it wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination.
My imagination could have been more stretched too.
But really, what films don#t pull on these kinds of plot devices and missing links?
Pretty much all of them do. The fact is I can give an answer for all of your 'issues'. I may be wrong, but at least it shows that there was a logic of some sort, even though it defied your own.

BioShockJune 01, 2012
I think the people that are butthurt from this movie dont comprehend what actually happened in the movie. The only negative comments I have read are from this board.
You claim there are plotholes but give no examples or discussion on it...perhaps you didn't understand it. Sometimes watching a movie again makes sense the second time around.
karlosfunksterJune 01, 2012
I though it was on par with Aliens for entertainment, better than 3 and Resurrection.
Not as good as ....
AVP,

People, there's no need to get mad. We all react differently. Quite a few people liked the movie, and quite a few people didn't. Simply respect their opinion and move on.

The OP is correct.
This film was an absolute load of shit, anybody who disagrees is simply a delusional/childish individual who still believes in Santa Claus.
And to 'Prenihility' - I find it absolutely hilarious, but I also genuinely feel sorry for you, that you are defending a film you have not even seen, with such ferocity.
Prenihility:
These "plot-holes" that you speak of. There's no such thing. And you can't penalize this movie for "plot-holes". You know why? Because this is the introduction to something big.
Plot-holes. My BUTT.
There are no plot-holes? The film is nothing BUT plot holes, here is a short list for you especially :)
Why were the engineers much smaller than the space jockey in alien?
What was the green gem we were shown in the chamber but it was never spoken of again?
Why did the engineers all run away in that hologram, what went wrong?
Why did the space jockey's heads explode for no reason?
Why did the engineer decide to go crazy and kill the entire crew after being in cryostasis for over 2000 years?
Why was there a picture of a xenomorph on the wall?
Why was the star map on earth showing the location of a random moon that was home to one of the many random engineer testing sites/military base - not actually their home world?
Why did Vickers have a med-pod in her room that 'only worked with men'?
How did they conveniently forget there was a 1 tonne giant squid living in Vickers' quarters for a considerable period of time?
Why did the alien at the end look almost nothing like any xenomorph ever seen before?
Why was there a geolgist on board who didnt show any interest in any rocks, or any form of science the whole time he was there?
Why did the scientist pet a snake 3 times which was clearly an aggressive dangerous alien?
Why did David infect holloway with the alien DNA? what was the point? Why would Weyland give the order to infect Holloway and risk the entire crew?
The list goes on, and on, and on, and on.
Is that enough plot holes for you, or do you want some more?
Oh, and An introduction to something big? Hahahaha. Shaw flying off to the Engineer's homeworld with David's head to go and say hello and get killed like the rest of the crew? Or the hatched Alien queen wandering round laying a few eggs and dieing on that empty space rock. Yeah, that's really 'big'.
The film was a load of SHIT, get over it, and do something else with your life.
stefanJune 02, 2012
I must say I kind of agree with jingles. The whole movie was too 'Hollywood', the script and dialogue was actually pretty awful, Vickers character was unbelievable and 2 dimensional and some of the scenes were silly. The special effects were on the whole excellent, but even some of that was poor; the initial scene were the engineer's body breaks down the giant alien baby/octopus (reminded me of The Little Shop Of Horrors) and the xenomorph at the end looked too cgi.
Alien was great largely because of the natural acting and realistic and believable characters, this did not have this. This was too Aliens/Avatar, not the Alien/Bladerunner that I wanted. Some of the concepts were good but not explored. Whereas in Alien the unanswered questions were macabre and fitted in, in Prometheus they were silly and too numerous. The story concept was good in itself, but the detail and delivery was poor. For me, this was 6 or 7 out of 10.

Well, saw it in France this afternoon.
Uh... My review is this :
-Beautiful cinematography ;
-Insignificant music;
-Some good actors. Well, two in fact : Rapace and Fassbender. The fate of Meredith Vickers is ridiculous....Idriss Elba has no consistance, same for the other actors.
-Fassbender is impressive in his role.
-And the scenario sucks like hell...
Let's say that you will enjoy these two hours, and forget them just after...

Coming from the guy who has to post a troll/rant to a specific member because he doesn't like the movie.
LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAWL.
pulserifle1June 03, 2012
Yeah theyre were massive plot holes, the script was poor in terms of the development of the story:
go to the alien ship, go back to promethious, go back to alien ship, go back to promethius, etc crash promethius into alien ship, the end
If you want drama/suspense dont take the characters out of the crucible.
On the plus side Thought Rapace was great, I kind of have a crush on her lol, Sets Cgi amazing, Great big ideas in the film/script I guess thats why were all talking about it now!
thismoviesuckedJune 10, 2012
Wow guys. Read my username and believe it. I might have given the film say a 5 out of 10 if it had nothing to do with the first film. But it did. It was a prequel. You owe something when you make a prequel. You owe it to the fans to at least make it so the first movie Alien could have happened.
Lets just list problems here....
Big white mr. clean eats genetic crap and dies at the beginning...why?
So, after all the coolness of "where did this strange skeleton looking pilot in the first movie come from"....the answer is....It's not that strange of a race at all....in fact the cool skeleton is nothing but a space suit?.....and has inside it a giant man....not a cool creature of some kind....a man goodness sake....only big and bald like mr. Clean...whatever.
Why would mr. clean create a race of humans on earth just to destroy them...and if so why would he visit earth about 6 different times through the ages just to say high and then later...right when this movie is going on....decide right then he needs to juice up the "derelict spaceship" and destroy the earth....
Not that this is really a derelict spaceship anymore....see, it has good company....in fact conveniently there are many of them just lying around all over this planet...so at the end....after they've destroyed the first derelict spaceship....the heroine can take off in it and do .....what?.....
Oh ya, she wants to find out why the big mr. clean wanted to destroy her planet...way to go answering those important questions....not even the cast knows whats going on....anyway.....
so if mr. clean eats black genetic ooze crap, he just disenegrates like at the beginning...but if another human eats it....say an annoying drunk guy who just knocked up his girlfriend....that guy grows a big head and starts jumping around like a super chimp idiot?
Now then...I should mention that the 2 guys most scared of doing anything in this whole movie decide to hang out in a room full of giant snake creatures and then poke at them? Can anyone guess what happens....if you guessed death....you'd be....bored like me......
Oh by the way....I spoke earlier of the strange pilot in the chair from the first movie...I guess we can disregard that actually because in this movie it ends with all the possible pilots dead somewhere else. The one giant mr. clean pilot that got impregnated with an alien didn't die on the chair....he died in like a human escape pod....by like exploding or something....and giving birth to....
Something that I guess was an alien but didn't have the metal jaws so that was lame....and also that was the only live creature left on the whole planet (other than boring cg giant worms)....so how in the world when you get to the movie "Alien" do all these alien eggs even exist.....
And what ever set off the "warning beacon" that the crew in Alien homed in on? Surely not the heroine at the end of this movie. She's off flying around in space....flying an alien spacecraft by the way via instructions from a severed android head. Man she must be some kind of piolot....even for a scientist with no pilot skills.
By the way...I know there were trying to gross us out by having an automated medical bay open up a lady and drag out a squid, but come on....that scene was ridiculous and like this chick could just pump herself with a couple of sedative shots and run around diving over falling crap with 15 staples holding her stomach together.
By the way...I want to make it very very very clear that I in know way thought the evil old guy behind this whole operation could possibly be alive....or that his motives might be trying to meet his maker to extend his life....I never thought that would happen....it wasn't cliched.....not cliched at all.....yawn.
By the way....if mr. clean was waiting for us humans to become technologically advanced enough to come visit him, why would he wake up out of deep freeze like a grouch and try to kill everyone he sees? Wouldn't he be pleased instead. Oh wait....I forgot they needed a "plot turn"....oooooo......plot turn.....scary mr. cleans on the rampage.......oooooo......
By the way, my wife thinks they were trying to say that the black ooze dripped out onto some small worms on the ground and then they grew and became the big CG snakes....but if that was the filmmaker's intention it was vague and I didn't get that until she pointed it out to me....either way....CG WORMS don't push the envelope.
So they wanted to give us some back story I guess as to what happened with this derelict spacecraft....and so they do it by making the token evil android ....and I do mean token at this point because there's one in like every alien film.....the "token evil android" happens to decipher languages so well that he can pretty much instantly figure out how do do things like play this complicated foreign spaceship's holographic video logs.....(yes I know, planted only for stupid 3D effect but anyway).....and then these video logs go on and....they just show dudes dying but nothing before that??? Like they can't press rewind on the holographic logs?.....just rewind it back a bit further and maybe you'll get some more info you know.....and then that might be able to explain why this next thing happened.....
like there's a pile of big mr. cleans all dead ad huddled over with holes in their chests like an alien exploded out of them....so where are all these aliens?....they weren't in the holographic tapes....mr. cleans just ran around a bunch and huddled in fear with that.....and there's no aliens running around anywhere now......so what, they all maybe got bored and flew off in these many many many derelict space crafts that apparently were scattered all over the planet?.....man oh man.....
OK.....there's plenty of other things, but I've wasted enough time just watching this movie so.......
Side annoyances are...
Oh I saw this in 2D because 3D is nothing but a distracting jazz gimick....but that didn't keep me from having to endure the WOW and PIZAZ scenes so obviously planted just so they could try and do .....33333333 DDDDDDD......wow!....3333333 DDDDDDD......a new invention....just out today.....not back in the 60's.....man, don't get me started.
They touted this movie like it was a "scary film", with a similar feeling to the first film.....uh.....sorry guys.....no.....
Movie was slow going with lame payoffs when they happened.
wow, the technology sure looks pretty good considering 30 years later there practically holding their ships together with duck tape.
great cast of actors used to drool 3rd rate rag doll lines.
The cool tunnels obviously "created" by the aliens near their nests I guess were never created by them but these big white mr. cleans because those tunnels are everywhere in this movie and there's no aliens until the very end. And there was only 1 alien....so I guess he's a really hard worker.
dialogue campy and cliched
characters campy, stupid and cliched
Guy pearce old man makeup was fake looking as all get out
Anyway. Like I said I could go on for hours. The plot holes were many the general little annoyances were many. The movie sucked guys. If you are smart enough to know that there are really only 2 good alien movies.....which are ALIEN and ALIENS.....then you'll be smart enough to know not to see this heap of trash. It's certainly no better than the lame Alien 3 and really isn't much better than Alien resurrection. This film in my opinion is quite possibly the biggest failure in the franchise for what it was trying to do. And what it was trying to do was explain to the Alien fans where all of this came from. The explanations are lame at best. The methods of explanation are poor as well. For anyone who is a real fan of the original Alien, this film doesn't feel or achieve anything like it. The more intriguing you found the original film, the more disappointed you will be with the answers you get from this film....which really aren't many anyway....because like I said....the ending didn't even clear Prometheus up.
Sorry Ridley,
You completely missed the target
