If your expecting Alien or Aliens redux, firstly, you obviously haven't listened to a word Ridley Scott or anyone else involved in the production have been saying for the last six months, and secondly, why want that? You already have those two great films. This one takes an element of the first film ie the ship with the guy in the chair and explores what he is and why he has a ship full of rotten (to put it mildly) eggs. And by the way, doesn't answer that question directly. More,it tells a story which is interesting of itself that gives you clues as to the roots of Alien.
With all that in mind, plus Alien and Aliens being two of my favourite films; I bloody loved it. I saw it in 3D IMAX.and it looked breathtaking. It will definitely be a "grows with rewatchng". The first viewing will inevitably be dominated by the kills, the creatures and the explosions, and that's why I wanted to wait to write this review. I wanted the adrenalin to subside so I could reflect on the film as a whole. Also, I needed to get past the sad feeling of having actually SEEN it after the months of speculation and excitement. Weird I know, but I will miss that!
So, what to say? Well, Visually it is close to faultless. The 3D works beautifully. The story takes its time to build but once your into the second half it's pretty relentless horror/action all the way. In that respect it is very much a film of its time. People expect that kind of pace. Alien was made in a different time. If you want Alien, watch Alien.
I also suspect that some of the really disappointed reviewers on this site will get over their feelings of it not being what they wanted it to be and come to enjoy it for what it is. I also have a feelin there is going to be a tremendous directors cut on the blue ray!
It is of course the high expectations of Ridley Scott and Alien that result in some of the mixed reviews because if this film was released as a stand alone piece people would be raving about it and it's director. There is no sci if film in recent memory that comes close (yes, District 9 is fantastic, but not in the epic way of this).
I am sure people will have mixed feelings about the final ten minutes, and particularly the final 60 seconds. For me it works and I would be happy to leave it there. My only concern would be the sequel that it naturally sets up may be just too much (Matrix 2 and 3 anyone?).
So why only 4.5 not 5? There are a couple of scenes of dialogue that grated with me. Elba's exposition as to the purpose of the Alien ship was unnecessary and smacked of dumbing down and his speech to the crew before heading off to take on the alien ship would have been more suited to a Transformer film. But that apart (and it's a small that) I loved it and what's more, I think I will grow to love it even more on repeat viewings.
