Well without wanting to spoil it....
This movie has two ending elements, that can either be explored.
So we have potential for two different sequels....
Or we can go the one route but have the end of that one tie up whats left from the other route that could be taken and thus give us the direct Alien link...
When you see the movie you will notice that the scope for how the movie would go as far as Prometheus 2 is not so open....
One route could avoid any Alien links... but also Weyland and explore Engineers....
The other would explore Weyland Corp, link to Alien but no Engineers....

@BigDave
Try and keep up, from the majority of comments coming in, it seems that anyone with a brain cell still intact after seeing this tripe, would rather blow a face hugger than sit through another "epic" journey in this universe "that he, Ridley, created".

i thought it was a good film not great it could of been but it wasnt ,it seems as though it was going to be a full blown prequel but then changed his mind half way through .in the original the Nostromo set down on lv426 because it picked up what it thought was a distress signal which turned out to be a warning to stay away a warning recorded by Shaw in Prometheus.so for scott to say this is a stand alone movie is rubbish theres too many links to Alien.
The death scenes of the crew members was too rushed it stands to reason if you were attacked by an alien being you would be terrified but im afraid the tension and fear were woefully missing.I thought the plot about man trying to find out his origins and evolution and that of Alien was good but not very well executed.
Having said that i do think its part of a trilogy and Scott now has a duty not to just go off into this larger universe but to fully evolve the alien into the Xeno weve all come to love part 2 should also be interesting as Shaw seeks out the answers to why our creators now want to destroy us .Potentially this has the makings of being a great adventure as long as Scott doesnt deviate too much and brings back those much needed incontinence pants moments.
Get your act together Scott and this could still turn out to be a masterpiece but if you let your inflated ego take over it could spell disaster

I think Ridley has to go and explore a new era.... and not go back to the Xeno....
Maybe this will upset some maybe not..... its a shame we never got to explore the final outcome of what the Black Goo would have done to some of the crew infected by it. Maybe it does no further?
I dont know what answers Ridley was aiming for or giving because he has not answered if the Xeno was created 1000's years prior.... some can assume that, it depends on how each person interprets the clues.
Take the end of the movie, we something that could explain, but then not because of some things that would not allow it to add up.
If they had allowed that scene to take place slightly different it would have given us a Alien Prequel.... they could have gone that route with one element and made Alien fans very happy....
And then explored the other aspect of the ending that may be not connected at all....
However the other aspect that was more linked to Alien, if Ridley wants to visit that in another movie and one thats not connected to Alien then he can do that with how it ended as opposed to how it could have.
I have no problems with the end of the movie.... yes one scene is not shown in detail, but Prometheus 2 if it follows that path would show us 5 mins of what off screen would had happened.
The scope of the story is very interesting, the way the movie ends leaves to routes for it to go..... one will close two aspects that had been done in Alien - Alien 3 should it ignore that route.... while the other would close the two aspects that was just started to be covered in Prometheus should they go with the other route.
