The PROMETHEUS legend is that Prometheus stole fire from the Gods and gave it to man. The first real technology for Man which further spawned many different types of technology.
WHAT IF... The Engineers stole the technology of the XENOMORPH from their Gods and have been attempting to unlock its secrets and manipulate its DNA to make them "obedient" to them.
Man's greatest gift = FIRE
Enginerr's greatest gift = XENOMORPH/DNA MANIPULATION
It is evident the Engineers have a lot of trouble handling this outbreak in the film. Could the URNS contain "[b]failed attempts[/b]" at creating an "obedient" version of the Xenomorph? And the numerous chambers containing URNS is merely storage units to house dangerous, failed attempts of Xeno-DNA configurations?
It makes sense when you think about it. Each organic life form to come into contact with the "Bio-Former" form different urns turned into something DIFFERENT! I think this was most certainly done on purpose - NOT just for kicks.
So, back to my theory - The Engineers steal this Bio-forming technology from their Gods.. Or better yet, their Gods GAVE them the ability to create life - BUT the Engineers get greedy (like humans) and want MORE - more power, more control. Maybe they even want to over take their Gods! So, maybe either on of their Gods.. Their "PROMETHEUS" if you will - leaks them a sample of this Xeno-DNA to tamper with in hopes that someday it will over throw their superiors and let the Engineers reign supreme.
But they have yet to get it right - and understanding its technology is too difficult for even them to comprehend. So, their failed attempts have adverse affects on the Engineer race - killing them.
We know something goes wrong on LV223 - and the Engineers need to lock themselves away in cryo to escape whatever is after them (I assume it's one of their earlier failed attempts).
So I want to hear your takes on this theory. It's a patchy one at best right now - but I think could certainly work, given the philosophical influences this film possesses.

In short....
Gods give Engineers the ability to create life. Engineers create us.
Engineers get greedy, want more - they steal Xeno DNA.
Humans evolve - gain more knowledge and wish to meet our makers. Learn from them - or quite possibly steal their technology so we may be on equal footing with them.
Engineers fail repeatedly at breaking down the Xeno-DNA and only craete hordes of DNA mixtures which pose massive threats to all organic life throughout the universe. So they stow it all away in confined URNS in an attempt to quarantine the hazardous materials which they contain.
Humans develop FTL travel - track their creators to their base of operations.
Humans set off an alarm by entering a room the Engineers hopes to keep sealed away. Xeno-DNA cross breed mixtures are released and have adverse affects on its hosts. Mutating the DNA makeup.
Engineers wake up - realize what they have done, assume they're there to steal their technology and over throw them (as that's their goal as well) and so they react aggressively.
In a freak accident, a new breed of Xeno-DNA mixture evolves into something horrific and the only piece of the puzzle missing is the Engineer's genetic makeup - which once mixed creates the PERFECT ORGANISM.
From there, for both the Engineers' and Humans' treachery, they are punished and burdened with a creature which can adapt to any environment, which is resilient and relentless. They are punished for their insubordination.
PROMETHEUS legacy begins.

Wouldnt it of been great if the movie had actually given us some kind of story or plot instead of us all coming on here making up our own.

I think that whoever the Big Head happens to be, he is the Engineers' Prometheus. He, in turn acquired his knowledge from another group of gods who are xeno-like, or like the crouching creature in the mural, who from his forehead, eyes, elbows and ribs, fits exactly inside the space jockey suit.
Somehow, some experiment paying homage to this group went wrong resulting in the xeno and the Engineers extinction.
There's some truth in this somewhere-- and the real truth lies somewhere between your view and Spiral's view, but includes the crouching creature and the xeno.
The Engineers just aren't the real space jockeys. The Engineers may be their soldiers-- who really knows, but I believe the saucer at the beginning of the movie may belong to this group. Perhaps a living host is the only way they can reproduce so they dropped the Sacrifice Engineer off on earth to create a planet of hosts? Maybe.
Perhaps, they're benevolent? But there's a mystery underneath this that RS is now setting up for a later payoff that will satisfy those who are now so angered by Prometheus, they can't even see when they're being set up.

AdminEngineerJun-02-2012 10:46 PM@OrangeAgent, perhaps the Humanoid Head represents the "TYPE" of species those DNA mixtures are compatible with. (IE. instead of just killing outright).
So for mixtures in the Urns found in that Ampule room - they react to create something new and living with species which share the "humanoid" DNA structure - just like the Engineers.
Perhaps in other chambers we see other Alien races which these DNA mixtures are "Targeted" for.
You look in nature, there are types of parasitic fungus which ONLY attack one form of insect in an ecosystem. It's a tailored virus so to speak.
Germ warfare - we can create pesticides to target one specific type of plant or bug.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is the case. That MURAL of the "Alien" could be what the Engineers find to be the byproduct when mixing those DNA mixtures with humanoids.
There could be different murals for different species classes which they've crossed the DNA mixtures with in the past.

i was thinking
god = engineers
prometheus = weyland corp or humans on the whole
gift/fire = biotech or it could be the gift of life as witnessed in the first scene
but i like your interpretation much more. it gives it more depth and a new twist. and i think thats the way RS will tell this story of the space jockey. that they are actually prometheus. they stole the fire and gave it to man. and there punishment was remain on this outpost or something like that.
what happens to the engineers homeplanet is a complete mystery. maybe that is where the god is, who gave them this technology.

MemberOvomorphJun-02-2012 11:52 PMWell, in the words of Janek the pyramid is a military base. It's like nuclear testing in the middle of the desert...and the end is quite clear that the engineers live far from there (his real home). And the myth of Prometheus, well for me:
1) Weyland wanted to get the technology to be immortal, the engineer looks perplexed but then puts his hand on David's head. Now hell and anger are unleashed and the engineer begins to kill them all. But the question is why?
David is not a human being, but if the attempt that. Then the engineer is enraged to see that humans were on the verge of being Gods (like them) and deside to go quickly to Earth to kill them.
2) Who is the eagle? We must remember that humans are creations of engineers. Maybe the engineers stole the technology from its creators to be like them. But Vickers said: "A king has his ring and then dies...is inevitable"...( I know these words were addressed to Weyland, but still sounds pretty good IMO) Perhaps mankind is destined to destroy their creators (such as Engineers)
But being honest is quite plausible that humans and the Engineers are punished with biological weapon, the perfect organism.
Then we have other Gods, who created the Engineers, and yeah it is possible that the head is an indication of the compatibility of DNA with black goo and can be nice to see a new variant of this weapon (maybe another alien race).

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 9:14 AM@sham. what if humans are the eagle? what if that invitation to come to the military outpost was not left by the engineers,but by the gods - the one who the engineers stole from. there intention to send us to them as a punishment. we humans turn into mental monster xeno types after touching the liquid. maybe its not a military outpost but a prison and we trigger the punishment?
that would make sense, the gods realised what had ahppened visited us and told us thats where we need to go.
also the first engineer in the opening scene is not dressed like the engineers on the outpost, also the ship is differant - although that could be because there millions of years apart.
