I have to say as a true fan of the Alien films growing up and a huge inspiration from Giger in my future artwork at College and University; I was truly blown away by the new film and Ridley's vision for a new concept within the same universe.
I came home and started flicking through my Giger books and came across something interesting which I wondered whether could shed some light on some possible inspiration taken and used in the new film. Much of Giger's artwork was inspired by his dreams and his nightmares. In one of his books he mentions another of his inspirations which came from a man called Carl Laszlo who he considered to be the most important connoisseurs of art. Carl Laszlo wrote what appears to be a commentary on the human condition which inspired Giger's nihilistic views. Here is a section of that commentary which made me wonder whether the answers that Dr Shaw in the movie seemed so desperate to discover from the so called "Engineers" or in my view "Prometheans" could ultimately be explained as follows.....
[He can claim no power for himself, if he draws only on his own forces, for he is himself nothing and has at his disposal only the illusion of his person and his forces. He can claim no power for himself, for, being meaningless, he has no right of possession over living beings or things. Lead astray by humanism and blinded by the belief that man is the centre of the universe, he fails to recognise his true place in the order of things. He forgets the basis of his existence, and therefore he must perish.i]"
Or I'm open to the prospect I could be reading a whole load of b****x into this and making a tit of myself, either way, it's fun to theorise. ;)
