I believe u are correct. I seem to recall something similar in the conceptual art illustrations in the 'book of alien' and it suggested original ideas about temples and alters relating to the worshipping of an unseen entity. This idea was canned in favour of the derelict discovery so perhaps Ridley has simply revisited his original vision with the benefit of budget and a free reign on artist direction now he has earned his 'stripes' after a further 30 years in the industry.
