MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:21 AMI think that all along, David had an agenda which was only hinted at.
His foreknowledge (knowing just exactly how to remove the engineer's helmet, knowing how to work the control panels, open doors) means something. We see him studying the Engineer's language during the spaceflight, and when it comes to him reading some heiroglyphics, they just say, ' I hope you can read that!' and he says LOLscientists or something and if he can read it, he doesn't say.
Now, there can't be any evidence on Earth of the Engineer's language, probably not the written but certainly not the spoken. But there David is, taking lessons in that language to the point where he obviously says something meaningful to the engineer he wakes up.
So Weyland must share in that foreknowledge too. I think what David is doing during that two year spaceflight is significant. Perhaps also it's the case that once again, the Company knows something its employees don't.
And then what's with David's fascination with Dr Shaw's religious faith? He studies it in her dreams, he goes to lengths to break it down; his dialogue when he informs her of her 'pregnancy' is Diabolical, I think! Why did he keep her cross so that when she asks him for it at the end, he's got it right there?
Oh yes, and at the start of the movie, Weyland pointedly says, David doesn't have a soul.
Maybe it's just pretentious nonsense combined with shoddy writing, but I'd prefer it wasn't...

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:26 AMno I agree....many people are moaning about not having every little thing explained to them...at least not yet! But for me it was good thing. There has to be more to it than we have seen. How on Earth did Weyland know the engineers had biological technology, that may be implemented to increase his life span? Wild guess that he spent a trillion dollars on?

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:32 AMI think we can assume that if the Engineers created life on earth and inspired the ancient civilizations to create paintings and carvings in their honour, the the ancient languages of earth were also derived from the language of the Engineers.
I thought David was one of the best characters in the whole movie, dyeing his roots while watching Lawrence of Arabia, mixing cocktails and then the dig at Shaw, "I didn't know you had it in you."
The big question is can Shaw trust David now?

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:39 AMleewurf, that's exactly what i said about David last week.
He learned a lot, and keeps for himself. i think he even betrayes Weyland in some way.
I can't explain, but he is the most important in the movie.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 7:33 AMI think David has his own agenda, Maybe he wants to become a real boy so to speak and that is what drives him. Maybe using the black goo to somehow make him truly organic.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 8:13 AMWe have no idea what David said to the engineer either,I think that may be key.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 1:58 PMLove Gizbuts idea of using the goo to make him a real boy. Now that would be interesting.
But yeah, David was probably the best part of the film for me, such an interesting character.
