I am an American so I still have not seen the film. I am very discouraged by the onslaught of negative reviews however I feel I need not be too disheartened. We Americans have been affected by years and years of brain numbing tv shows and bad movies. As a way to relax from the long work week, many of us just want to go to a movie, turn our brain off, and enjoy a movie despite the possibilities it may be very bad. I for one will be going to Prometheus with my brain turned off to escape life for a while. I'm sure I will enjoy it regardless of plot holes(I couldn't care less) , undeveloped characters(Normal for an alien franchise movie), and cheesy dialogue("game over man... game over" anyone?).

It's actually hovering at around 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, Which (as I mentioned in a different thread) essentially equates to a "hit". Why the glut of negative responses on this site in particular? I dunno. Maybe people need attention? Or maybe obsessing over something for so long expecting it to be one thing and having it turn out to be something else is more than some people can deal with gracefully? I can't predict how anyone else will react to it. I'll just say that I thought it was awesome on the whole (though the ending is kind of a WTF). It was really thrilling. truly creepy, and there are elements of it that will stay with me for a very long time.

"Put her in charge!" Aliens is its own wonderful-brand-box of exotic cheese, MOSTLY. ;) I prefer the term Artificial Person, etc.
2013 sci-fi horror novels 'Custodian' and 'Tandem' available from Amazon, B&N, iTunes etc...

Hicks: I like to keep this handy... for close encounters. Frost: I heard *that.* one of my all time favorite quotes from aliens

You may like it, and I really hope you do... there actually have been a few people who have enjoyed it. I wouldn't grasp to tightly to Rotten Tomatoes 'score' of the movie though, too many people logging fake/multiple accounts on there trying to drive up the positive reviews to really be able to trust them. Just see the movie and if you like it or not, you'll know.

I think you will like it. Apart from a part of the fan community (ie us) it seems people have a great time at the cinema. As for the fan community I think its split down the middle depending mostly on expectations people had before the movie was released. Consider alot of the people on this site that slam the movie. On the one hand they slam Prometheus for lacking 'cerebral' depth and character development ...on the other hand they praise Alien. It doesnt make alot of sense :) Dissapointed and angry geeks rarely do....it has to do with passion. Hence the AvP remarks (AvP being the worst swearword in the community). Finally do remember that Alien was dismantled by most movie critics and referred to as 'an empty bag of tricks' or variations thereof. In the meanwhile most of the big moviecritics give Prometheus a high score.

@Jtmann: in regards to what others think about the film: the ONLY opinion that matters is your own. i too am going to walk into the theater this coming friday but i will do so with my mind wide open, and my sad little brain turned on as high as it can go i am seeking an escape from the nightmare that my "life" has sadly become. perhaps PROMETHEUS will be a sort of distracting nightmare in the best possibly way at least, that is what i am hoping for can't wait..! =)

Shardy: if you dont expect another 'alien' (haunted house movie set in space) but instead feel ready for a great dark sci fi movie then you are in for a real treat. Enjoy the ride.

Jtmann I think you made an interesting point and I too am going with pretty much the same (maybe a little less due to the reviews) attitude. You are dead spot on with "brain-numbing" TV shows! How sick are you of friggin' reality TV and vastly truncated seasons for good dramas?

Um, so Rotten Tomatoes AND iMDb are both just big (random) conspiracies to trick you into thinking a movie is liked when it's not? And you say *Prometheus* has plot holes...

I read this with absolute astonishment. I literally cannot be sure I can really and truly be taking your meaning correctly. You seem to be suggesting that, "you Americans", have been so dumbed down to the point where it now matters not one little bit whether there is any actual merit in what gets served up to you, as long as there is an opportunity to watch a flickering screen for 2 hours - to, "relax"... If that is the case, then I have a feeling there will still be a great many, (although a minority, apparently), who will not be quite so happy in their acceptance of what you seem to acknowledge you are willing to accept and happy to consume - which would seem to be regardless of how poorly made it is. If that is the case, it seems to me that you are then complicit in an agreement with the manufacturer of that poorly considered garbage, that poorly considered garbage is what you agree you deserve. I can't imagine on what possible basis you, or anyone who agrees with such a statement would have in voicing any criticism of, or disappointment in, anything at all that they are served up: ever. If, "you Americans", are, "brain-numbed", and, "don't care", about Plot, underdeveloped characters and cheesy dialogue then, surely, by that token, (and re-inforced even in the declaration of such a sentiment), you'll get exactly what you deserve - and you shouldn't be surprised if what you deserve is exactly what you get. If you're happy to accept plot-holes, underdeveloped characters, cheesy dialogue, and all, where is there any grounds for any kind of complaint? Or filling holes? Or developing Character... What would be the actual purpose in discussion of it? In fact, what would be the point of holding any expectations of intrinsic value in what is produced, at all? What would be the value in a forum like this?...It seems you'll ultimately be just as happy, however it turns out. Despite what you have said, America still produces some of the finest and most challenging works of Cinematic and Televisual Art of modern and all times...but, if what you have said is now the general and prevailing attitude and sensibility of the majority, is it really any surprise at all, that thinly plotted, poorly characterised, cheesily-scripted garbage, (for the most and increasingly greater part), is exactly what everyone has to put up with? Not every film has to be Citizen Kane - but neither does it have to be poorly considered garbage to be a "light" cinema experience!.. If people stopped, (or even still knew how to stop), complacently paying to be served poorly considered garbage, there'd be a reduced incentive to keep producing poorly considered garbage and overall quality would improve - for everyone. One of the strangest and most terribly dispiriting things I have ever read on here.

You should not be so upset by a mere internet forum post. I am simply saying that the movie need not be good to be successful the USA. Movies can have many flaws to be enjoyable. I give you examples of garbage movies that have had huge success. Transformers saga, Twilight, Saw. One need not be offended by my post as I am just telling it as it truly is. Yes, Hollywood does make good movies as well and will continue making crap movies as long as one is willing to pay to see it. But alas, nothing is wrong with that. If someone considers themselves satisfied by a movie considered poor by someone else, then that is all right. That is fine. It seems you have a high place in your heart for film and like to have in depth discussion about movies after viewing them. That is fantastic. Also realize that there are many people that do not do this. I would say there are very few films even worth discussing for me. To me, action films and sci fi are two genres I will likely never discuss and contemplate.

I would also like to add that I though Alien/Aliens were good movies, not great. They both had many plot holes, lack of character development(every dies...almost), and very poor dialogue. Were they awesome movies though?? Hell yea they were! Alien is a sci fi movie about an Alien killing people and the suspense that comes with that. I would discuss with others how awesome the alien was or about an awesome scene where the Alien killed someone. Nothing more. I hold movies to a high standard but it does not mean I cannot enjoy mediocre/good movies. However I refuse to see movies I know are crap.

I've seen it on the internet already and was disappointed for all the reasons people have been mentioning. That having been said, I still plan to go see it in 3D this weekend with some friends and have a good time. While it might not be the masterpiece I hoped for, it's a good-looking film and will probably be amazing in 3D with nice sound. As someone who is definitely in the negative review camp, it's still pretty entertaining compared to most of what we see on screen these days.
