Well done Ridley!

I've been well and truly turked out of £15. What makes me laugh is hearing people say how they're going to a second viewing to see if it'll be better, that's right go and line the studios pockets even further. It's not Alien, and it wasn't meant to be anything like Alien. So what we'll do is create an ad campaign featuring the music, and aesthetics of the Alien film. We'll stick a bit of HR Giger in there, and tack on a short scene at the end of a xeno (proto alien) that'll keep em quiete. Genius my left foot.

I understand your rant, but it wasn't a crap film. It just wasn't great as we expected.
It's far from perfect, and your criticisms are valid.
However, It is a visual spectacular, jaw dropping set pieces and sound fx that are haunting.
Let downs, soundtrack, dialog, editing...
It's brilliant to watch on IMAX....

@sadako no one cares about the visuals..they wanted a good story
This film is truly disappointing, Ridley has good direction but how on earth he allowed that script to pass boggles the mind..he really has gone George Lucas in that aspect...the acting was very Hayden Christensen
And the end...my god....how cheap
June 05, 2012
Giger, O'bannon and scotts ideas around biomechanism and reproduction and an even greater part of this movie than they are of Alien.
That you expected a movie similar to Alien in expression is entirely your fault and doesnt make the movie crap. Maybe if you had listened to what the artist has repeated over and over the last year....
June 05, 2012
Haha, acting very Hayden indeed?!
All very 'LOST' to me.....
Ok, if there was no Alien tie-in would you respect the movie more?
Is it better than 'Sunshine' / 'Event horizon'? (thanks to Promethianman for this question)
June 05, 2012
actually, it was a crap movie, you 'apologists' need to stop coming to these threads and starting fights because we dont share your point of view. welcome to the internet.

Sadako
Would you say romy and Michelle's high school reunion would be a better film with epic scenery and backdrops and improved sound effects?
All in all it's not a bad movie in my opinion but surely if if Irish thinks its crap then that's his thats the beauty of film we all take different aspects from it
And Irish I have seen it twice and I did get a lot more from it 2nd time round having lowered my expectations I enjoyed it a lot more
However I do feel cheated that it was not the movie it was marketed as

i dont know what an apologist is in this regard really, but i see terms like 'apologist' being used in debates in geek communities like ours. I think it reveals an unwholesome look at the art in question. You are of course free to think its a crap movie and I'm free to debate in a thread on a debate forum.

the arguments are always: "well you shouldn't have expected an Alien prequel"...I didn't...I was quite happy with this aspect..I wanted a good story set in the Weyland universe, you could have removed all creatures for all I care
"Well art is subjective"...disagree...there are certain things that are objective..99% will agree "Alien" is a good film with great character development..FACT...saying it has poor character development would simply be untrue, it would be a false statement, regardless of your opinion
Gladiator has awesome cinematography...FACT...you can't say otherwise..there are certainties in art
Prometheus had a very weak script and character writing...FACT...it cannot be denied unless you are 9 years old
"Your expectations were too high" ...yes they were...This is Ridleys last sci-fi film before he croaks probably..is this the legacy he wants to leave behind? I would have settled for something as flawed as Alien 3, but what we got was AVP:R from Ridley Scott himself...Yes I was incredibly dissappointed
June 05, 2012
Personally, I think the ideas were far too deep for some people. They got lost in the film and they couldn't see enough explosions happening, got angry and then come here to pointlessly demean some great people.

Prometheus has the most interesting characters in the 'Alien franchise' ...fact
Prometheus has one of the more original and thoughtprovoking scrips in mainline cinema the last 10 years ...fact
it cannot be denied unless you are 9-year old and pissed off that Ridley Scott doesnt do what you would like him to do.

spot on....when i see hateful geeks filling the internet with venom about artists it just makes me sad. Particularly the digs at Ridleys age and George Martins weight/heart that have surface this year. It's unseemly and low.

Again i said it before....
I think the movie was trying to be too clever, they had a lot of good ideas that i think was just to hard to be able fit into a 2 hour odd movie.
Take Avengers.... if we never had Iron Man 1-2, Thor or Captain America, then Avengers would have had to had a lot to do to cover there stories while also go with the Avengers movie.... note me saying Avengers was good..... i hated the whole Avengers meets Transformers meets Skyline Baddies...
I think if Prometheus had 3 hours to play with some more depth could have been added to the movie....
I think you can see Lindelofs DNA on this movie and if you like his work, its not bad, if you dont then its going to cause problems....
Some stuff i liked, some stuff well was a bit odd.... made little sence.
There is potential in the movie though, i just hope Lindelof is not as big a influence on Prometheus 2.
But thats my oppinion and other people will enjoy the movie, just because one person loves Meat Feast Pizza does not mean every one will love it.
As i said the movie just needed more screen time to flesh out some aspects of the movie....
The plot was good, very good, just for maybe various reasons the execution is maybe not as well done as the potential.
That does not make it a bad movie at all, far from that.
And its each to their own.... I think Dark Knight Rises plot is a bit shabby, but depends how it is executed. While the Dark Knight was good....
Maybe its because i only class Bane as a henchman and a big man not the midget he is compared in this movie, and also i dont see Catwomen as a Heroine.....

How hard would it have been to tie this film directly to the SJ in Alien. Many people want to know his story. The studios just want to churn out sequel after shoddy sequel, to maximise profits at the expense of quality cinema. Which it would seem that RS is more that happy to oblige.
I agree wholeheartedly with Xeno Jonesy, nice avatar btw.
Galacticnorth you don't have any idea of what I expected. You obviously were wearing rose tinted specs whilst watching this rubbish film. The dialogue was comical at best, Zero character development, and the pacing was all over the place. In short RS could film himself taking a shit, and you would rave on about his artistic vision. Grow up.

Ridley Scott didnt make this movie to tie it nicely inn with the SJ in Alien....deal with it.
June 05, 2012
@galacticnorth
I dont think everyone who does not like the movie should be called geeks....
Everyone has their own oppinions....
Ridley Scot has shown he is a genuis Alien and Blade Runner was great movies, some of his others not as great.
I do wonder maybe Ridley should have used more of his ideas over Lindelofs as i can see his stamp/DNA in the movie...
But then again some will love his work some wont.
And i guess all along Ridley was up against it because when you made two great movies in Alien and Blade Runner that sets a bar that is really really hard to meet.
I think the plot was great, maybe tone down some of the Lindelof ambiguity elements and if Ridley had a bigger budget and more time and had 3 hours to play with, we could have seen a masterpeice.
But saying that it is what it is and its a very bold attempt to make a more orginal movie than pop corn Aliens from Space Flick.
But thats Sci Fi, a few films really devine different elements of that genre and its hard to make something orginal and pull it off.
Credit has to go to Ridley for trying.... and ultimately he has made a decent movie, some will love it more than others but thats life.

1.Prometheus has the most interesting characters in the 'Alien franchise' ...fact
2.Prometheus has one of the more original and thoughtprovoking scrips in mainline cinema the last 10 years ...fact
Disagree with 1...agree with 2
Still...the movie was terribly executed and insulted the viewers intelligence a little too much for comfort
"well this movie is too deep for you"
fuck off....I love deep movies, movies people find too boring and slow moving like Solaris, The Sphere, Sunshine....I love intellectual sci-fi...THIS IS NOT IT

Ridley took a chance...
He decided to go with Lindelofs ideas to tone down the Alien links...
He felt that having a movie that directly ended with a Derelict Crashing on LV 426 with a Cargo of Eggs would just be your typical ending that you already knew.
Ridley also wanted to do away with and not visit the Xeno as its been done to death.....
The way they ended the movie, has however left the door open and could pose a risk....
Yes it could have ended with the Engineer getting up and getting on another Derelict to chase Shaw etc but then crash on LV 426 due to the Organism in side....
But then while this would close the door on Alien, it would imply that the Xeno is created at the time of Prometheus and not before...
And i think Ridley wants to leave the door open on that one, so it could be in Prometheus 2 explained to be a event a long time prior, or indeed he could go the route of that Organism being the Proto Xeno...
I said that i would have gone for a scene like the Water Fall creation one, a flash back at the end of the movie to show a Derelict leaving for somewhere but then see it have to make a emergency landing...
Then we pan to Egg Chamber and a open Egg....
That would have been the best ending... because it closes door on Alien and it does not show a single Face Hugger, Xeno, Chest Burster nothing.....
We could then in Prometheus 2 go after what happens to Shaw or go the route of a rescue mission goes to find what happened to Prometheus and Weyland/Vickers etc.....
As the movie ended.... now visiting that secon scenerio is going to lead to that new Xeno Organism which i think is going to have a big task to even live in the shadow of the Xeno and no matter how you dress it up its another Xeno type creature... not a good route for someone who does not want to do the Xeno as its done to death and then have to do another creature thats maybe dispointing...
Nope the more interesting route is to follow Shaw and David....

Galactic and spuppet
I'm sorry that people who didn't enjoy the movie aren't on the same intellectual wave length as others it must be difficult for supreme beings like yourselves to have to put up with mere mortals such as ourselves and for that I apologise
Did you enjoy avp??? because Prometheus has the same basic plot outline only set in space and with the exception of David you could've have found the same depth of character in every teen slasher movie since a nightmare on elm street
And just to clear something up I have seen the movie twice and I did enjoy it after the seconed screening but not enough to blindly sit here to defend a movie that has obvious flaws It seems to me that your only defending Prometheus because you are fans of RS would you be a fan of this movie with a different director
Ridley Scott is a great director it does have to mean he's directed a great movie there are lots of factors that contribute to a movie being great other than who the director is
