Will it become a hit?

I heard it was made for nearly 150 million so it will have to make at least 300 million worldwide to garner a profit and allow the studio to make its sequels.
John Carter and Battleship had huge overseas earnings but failed to break even due to their huge budgets and low domestic earnings.
So based on the reviews, it being rated R and the cost; will it at least break even or flop?

so far on boxoffice mojo, it states that it has made 35 million and is not yet in the US and many more countries. I am in the UK and saw it yesterday at the IMAX and loved it. a great film with many questions to now have answered!!

I think it will be fairly successful commercially. Will we be talking about in 30 years or even 3 months? No.

...well it killed MIB3 in almost every country it was released so far and MIB3 opened relatively strong....so that says a lot! Right now Snowwhite and the huntsman is making a killing....apparently it is taking in double what the studio anticipated and I loved the trailers...actually can't wait to go and see it as well!....tho i am certain Prometheus will kick it of it's current no.1 spot....the thing with prometheus is that it has generated tuns of curiosity...people want to go see it and even many of the haters have opted for a second viewing.....
It might not break any records....but it will do well enough to justify a sequel!

I certainly HOPE it's a hit. Being in the US, I have not seen it yet but I want to see further installments of this that will connect directly with ALIEN! I have yet to see a Ridley Scott genre film that I didn't like. I expect to like Prometheus!!

...the critic score i think is gonna drop with US audiences....but the commercial success will greatly increase!.....

I think it'll be a hit. I was hugely disappointed with it but even I went to see it again to see if I could salvage something from the wreckage. It was actually better the second time around but the third act is still a complete mess.

It's opening against absolutely nothing this week other than a kids movie, while the Avengers, MIB3, Snow White, and Battleship are all a few weeks old.
Theres a major Alien fanbase, and a major Lost fanbase who will likely see this. MIB3 and Snow White opened at about 55 mil and i see no way Prometheus underperforms either. Best horror movie opening ever was 54 mil, and while this isn't directly horror I look at the subject matter and R rating for comparison. I'm thinking it'll do about 60-65 million opening week as a floor, with upside to about 90 million depending on how bored everyone is this weekend.
When all is said and done i don't see it having a problem cracking 200-250 mil domestic. Based on what i'm reading here, there's alot of people that will want to see it twice, for better and for worse.

I can only guess, but I don't see any way for this to crash and burn like John Carter. FOX is way more on their game than Disney was in generating interest for this one.
It has a Rotten Tomatoes rating (so far) that is exactly the same as Return of the Jedi, and it has elevated 3D ticket prices and inflation on its side too.
1983 RotJ has produced roughly $500 mil. worldwide in its 30 year ride.
Prometheus will perform and spawn offspring.

It all depends on how receptive US audiences are to the film by this point. The many negative reviews will probably do a lot of damage to its box office earnings as rotten tomatoes is huge among movie goers here. It should still rake in a sizable amount of cash all things considered. However, it will probably be nowhere near the amount it would have been if it had released worldwide at the same time though. Americans are really big one being the first to get something.

No. With the obvious exception of advance ticket sales and the geeks, like me, who will watch anything Alien-related, word of mouth is going to strangle this movie. Bottom line is that it just isn't very good.

I still don't understand how this movie will be crippled by bad reviews. As of now, out of nearly 14000 (!!!!) votes on IMDB it holds an 8.0/10 rating, good enought to debut in the top 250 movies of all time list. 79% fresh on Rotten tomatos with a score of 7.1/10.

Well since I am deployed; I will not see this movie until I return to the US but I told my wife to go to the movies this weekend with the other Army wives. When I push her to spend my money; it is not an issue lol.
I see that June is a light competition month and hopefully it can sustain itself for three weeks.
