Spectagraph

So riddle me this....the spetagraph...kind of a "game changer". I have not seen the movie, so I am not sure how its use is explained (away) and there has been no discussion on the topic that I have found on this site, but wouldn't they have had that in Alien. The crew of the Nostromo is a mining vessel, might be necessary for finding any nefarious "critters" on the rocks they are chewing up and bringing on board. Your thoughts.
