Speculation - Is it so bad?

MemberOvomorphJune 06, 2012682 Views12 RepliesIt seems like it's common to get on here and start moaning about how the movie left so many aspects to question, but will then offer possible explanations to each question. Speculation is entertaining and interesting, possibly even more interesting than what we would have been provided with if they had answered every question. That's why many people are even still posting on this site even after seeing the movie, or atleast getting the gist of it. Every movie has minor plot holes, but leaving something to imagination (for now atleast) doesn't make it a "plot hole". What do yall think

I think there's more intentional plot holes than not.
Each hole leaves an option to make huge changes later. It may not be the most enjoyable way of doing it per the fan base, but it certainly works.
I personally like the movie. It could use a director's cut, but it's still a decent film.

I agree 100%. I enjoy movies that spark conversation, debate and ask a lot of the audience. I don't need to be spoon fed or have all the answers.
The fact that reviews are mixed is a good thing, imo.

I agree with all the above - I don't necessarily see any plot holes in the film, but any gaps in terms of the big themes or the plot generally are good and allow us all to speculate and discuss. I do think there is a better directors cut on the way which will spend more time developing the characters and their motivations - without spelling it all out for us I think the film misses this character development, so at present it's difficult to know (or even care) why such a character does such a thing. I'm convinced there will be a dircetors cut, probably what Ridley intended all along and will be a more 'complete' film. As for gpaps in the plot, there are good things mostly in that they leave things open for us to ponder over for ever more (e.g what did David say to the engineer) - it's the character development that's missing, mainly. The rest is all good man!

I have seen the film. No its not bad, but its not good either. The plot holes in it are not there intentionally, its just shoddily put together. The film doesn't leave much more questions, in fact i found the problem with it that it was too in your face and just utter nonsense.
I would make your own opinion and see it your self, but don't lie to yourself or turn the film into something it was clearly not . Its just a disappointing cash in.
What did David say to the engineer? Do you think that would ever be revealed?
I don't think there are many unanswered questions to be honest, i think people are reading too much into it.
It really is not a smart film at all, its absurd.
If you havent seen it and when you do, keep in mind oxygen.
I honestly think its watchable but the work of a genius gone mad.

I actully watched this movie on here last night....A recorded version from a sreaning was posted here then was gone!!!!! Anyways watched it....was not that impressed, then it got me thinking......I understand the why no one like it....They dont understant the idea!!!!!! So many quetion lay unanswered---that fine to me you need some left for next time..........My theory is that this was ony 1/3 of a whole story....put it this way!!!!!! its like only watching the first 1/3 of ALIEN....You see the begimming up untill kane wake up, and thats all!!!!!!! you following??? That would have been a horrible movie right..So hopefully I'm on the same page as R.S and there's 1 or 2 more movies on the way to complete one great story!!!!!!!! also leading into perhaps a rescue ship and crew searching for Prometheous, them finding and seeing an ALiens maybe, then leading to some how them crashing the ship to LV-426.......Only speculation at this poin though!!!!!

When we are big fans of a Franchise and we wait years for the Prequels, then we do build up ideas of how we would had liked it to had turned out.
Every person before we saw this movie would have different ways or wishes for how the movie ends up...... take some who was not happy about Engineers being Humaniods or creating mankind etc...
Just as Phantom Menance was not how every one would have maybe envisioned.... Good news is Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith was improvements and we never got to put up with Jar Jars lol...
So i think Ridley would take on board all comments both negative and positive and thats why Prometheus 2 has huge potential.

"....They dont understant the idea!!!!!"
Just f****ing shoot me now, someone please.
"....You see the begimming up untill kane wake up, and thats all!!!!!!! you following??? That would have been a horrible movie right.."
Thanks for pointing that out Captain f***ing obvious. That would make it a pretty stupid idea then.
I might point out thats why people don't release a third of film isn't it Because by your own logic, its unsatisfying and to a degree horrific. They had 2hrs to deliver something coherent. They failed.
Double ice is bang on the money.
These are not "how does Donnie Darkos mum recognise grechet?" these are "WTF did David do that for, cos it does nothing except lead to set piece X, which in turn leads to set piece Y and we'll tidy the rest up later".
The talk of sequels now to provide answer is probably to biggest FU to the audience in film history. Didn't crow about that a week ago did they?
If I'd known that this was going to be some shitty set up for two more films just to get the engineer in the chair on LV426 I would probably have avoided this film, God I wish I had.
June 06, 2012
Sorry you never enjoyed it Slipp_Digby....
If you was looking for a movie that ends with a Engineer getting into a Chair and then setting off on his Derelict to end up on LV 426, then Ridley did say the movie will not end with that.
I understand we been a bit swindled, because they said this movie will have....
No Face Huggers, No Chest Busters or Xeno, and Lindelof said likewise because they had been done to death....
Well we got Face Hugger, and Chest Burster just different and larger.
He said the end of the movie would explain Alien or link to it.....
It does not directly all it does is offer a clue... but then this clue is down to interpretation...
1) does this show us the Proto Xeno.......
2) Does this show us that the Engineers Fire/Goo can through a series of events create a simular Organism and thus give us the clue that the orginal Xeno was created via a simular process just at another time in History.
Yes the movie has flaws, and some plot holes and some cheesy scenes...
But i also think some of the unexplained stuff was not a problem.... and yes off course they was going for a movie that can lead to a few sequels as opposed to a one off movie that would lead to Alien.

I had a solution that would answer Alien links and make fans happy.....
So Ridley wanted to do a movie that would be stand alone, and not link directly to Alien or the Xeno, a movie that would pose some clues and answer some questions but be not about the Xeno, how it was created or how it got on LV 426....
But then to say the last 8 mins would link to Alien....... which it had two endings in one and either could lead to Alien...
But then the movie left some fans with no answers....
If Ridley wanted to avoid the done to death Xeno here is what they should have done........
Like the Water Fall Sacrefice Scene, which was a flash back....
At the end of the movie show a Derelict either taking off, or even just show one in Space (so we assume it came from LV 223 or their homeworld or maybe even heading to LV 223... you know leave it open to interpretation).
Then show the Pilot in his Chair, then pan to teh Cargo Bay where it has Eggs and then show one Egg open up and maybe the fingers of the Face Hugger.... then fade to black...
We would assume that this craft then lands on LV 426...
Or we could not show the Engineer, or show him suiting up as ship prepared to take off, then cut to scene of it in Space...
Then cut to Egg Chamber again this time though we see a Egg already open and yet again fade to black....
Both scenes would give us a big direct clue that some ship set years prior to Prometheus was carrying the Eggs and one of them opened up...
We dont have to see the Ship crash, we dont have to see no Chest Buster no Xeno or even no Face Hugger....
It would just let us know that a Derelict ship was in space with the Cargo but then on of the Cargo had escaped and we would have enough clues to sugest it face hugs Engineer who must then manage to land the ship and set off a warning becon before he gets Chest Busted but dont show none of that.
I mean after we see the pan to the Egg Chamber, it could fade to black then show a crashed Derelict on LV 426 then roll credits for a even bigger hint....
A scene as above would explain Alien and would allow Ridley to shut the Door on Alien and the Xeno....
This was not the case......
Maybe because Ridley has left it open so that he can explore a link to Alien in a Prometheus 2 or 3..... thus not shut the door on the Xeno yet....

Big Dave,
Yep understand all that, that's not what I wanted. That's what the recent interviews have suggested by saying that we are two films away from lv426. It just sounds to me that is is where they are heading I hope I am wrong.
What I wanted was a distinct film without the burdens of what went before it. So no xenos, and no need to explain the specific event which led to the engineer and derelict on lv426.
The question is if this was the aim of RS, why the felt the need to throw things in which go so against all if those aims and actually draw on the original films so much -. the xeno, the look, the feel, even a stolen piece of music from a previous film.
It's almost like RS or the studio wasn't confident it would work without these elements.
I wanted an original film with hints, not a rehash of every film since alien.
That's what it is, unfortunately.

Admittedly, I was bummed when i saw the film. Seemingly disjointed storytelling. But since then, I've realized there are actually two scenarios. The second is fairly mind blowing:
1. Ridley was given a terrible script and did and equally bad job directing.
2. The glaring plot holes were intentional. Some answers were made murky on purpose. Some questions would require research on the viewers part. Something "built in" to create ongoing internet buzz, speculation, and social media chatter.
If this is the case, it's pretty ground breaking.
It demands the viewer to continue to interact with a film long after leaving the theater. The Weyland site seems to support this. It's fairly deep, and helps add detail to a "world" the studio is creating.
This might be the first film that requires more than an admission to get the whole story. You need to seek out the rest in a web 2.0/3.0 environment.
Real back and forth interaction with a film, after the theater. An approach that almost forces fans to debate with each other after viewing. Interesting idea.
Time will tell I suppose.

@dmpsk8
I agree that their viral material plays a role in this movie too.
Watching certain videos, such as Happy Birthday David (I think it's called) actually gives a lot of insight into the character's motivation.
It reminds me a little of Donnie Darko and having to read up on the Philosophy of Time Travel to better understand the movie.
