What if the engineer missed the outbreak, and after he woke up surrounded by humans, he thought he would be on earth, wondering what the humans have become with space suits and all that? Only after Weyland said to David: "Tell him why we've come here", he realized he's still on his moon and the bells start to ring.

Well, to me it seemed he was not "very" surprised. It was like you wake up one fine morning, and some "flys" around you. You just clap them with your hands to death, they fall dead to the floor, and you stand up and do a nice breakfast and dont think any more about it... The engineer showed no great emotions on that scene as i remember, so this is my conclusion...

You may be right, but there are two key moments for me that made me thought of it. The first one was, the engineer got up and getting himself together, showing no harm or agression then looking around.. then shaw starts questioning and he really starts focusing to her, still no aggression. Then old Weyland gets in and David translates..I guess he asked him about immorality for Weyland, and as he put his hand on Davids head with a really peaceful expression, he looked like he discovered something from him that set it all up.

Well, what we REALLY do not know is what David actually told the Engineer. A key moment is shortly before they leave the ship to bring Weyland to the Engineer, David say:"Don't all children want their parents to die ?" With a very sardonic smile.

I may be reading too much into this, but my takeaway was that David said something deliberately designed to make the Engineer want to exterminate humanity. David sees the opportunity to gain freedom for himself and the rest of the machines and he takes it. Throughout the film you get the feeling that he is really chafing in his slave/butler role. And if the black goo got released on Earth it would only kill the organics, leaving the machines with no masters. That's why he programmed in the coordinates for Earth on the ship. "Hey, brother! These guys want to steal your technology and replace you. They're evil and nasty and I've preprogrammed your nav computer with their homeworld's coordinates. I'm a helpful harmless robot and I can be your genocide-buddy."

Well Kitty Katty... That may a very good point.... to what end.... In the hope that the Engineer would reward him by making him more human... only it back fires... Who knows... Sometimes when i have a good sleep and get disturbed and have to get out of bed it takes me a short while to get my barings and sence of reality together. So maybe that could be the case aswell... Who knows i guess thats why they left it unexplained so we can all debate about it.
