Human Creation Theory (spoilers)

I've been looking through the forums and so far everyone seems to assume that the Engineers created the humans out of benevolence. What I believe is that the Engineers procreated themselves (as we share the Engineers' DNA, it figures that we are them under different environmental circumstances) on Earth (a planet that supports their life) in order to test their bio weapons. We were created only to test their weapons. This fits with the concern, regarding David, of creating life. Halloway's response, "because we can", to David's question, "why did humans create me?", suggests that the creation of life is not necessarily a benevolent action and that it might be wiser not to know why one was created. The concept that procreation is not necessarily a kind or good action is further explored by Shaw's alien pregnancy.

I have a hunch, that we're deliberately getting confusing messages from the writer based on what David says, but that they are laying on the mythology for a reason, hence I am contemplating this scenario: These big hulking engineers were by-and-large a warmongering race, not interested in creating life for the sake of it, but in developing horrible beasts to use in colonial wars. (We'll probably see them fighting other species in sequel) And perhaps some few idealists amongst them decided to spread their technological seed, to seed a planet with 'normal life' rather than things selected for their nasty killing characteristics, and that they did this without official authority from the rulers of their society. I say this because it fits with the mythology (the spark stolen from the gods without their knowledge, and also with Socrates drinking Hemlock rather than retract his criticism of the 'might is right' attitude of Greek rulers. He died but his ideas spread widely. That's a guess of course, but I think there is a deliberate reason why the death looks so ceremonial, and why the ship is a discus and not a Horse Shoe . I think it's meant to convey that there's competing groups in their society, and we got set up and visited by the one that doesn't send Trojan horses full of nasty surprises. If they wanted to test weapons on us, we were really not very different 35,000 years ago compared to 2,000 years ago, (when the Jockeys were killed while working on their weapons. ) We were all homo sapiens by the time of the dated visit to Scotland. I think it shows that the group doing the visit were not planning on killing us, but their friends found out about us later, and marked us for annihilation. .

What a well thought out and well put together argument... I agree with nearly everything you both say....since we share dna,it's obvious that they created us but we also may have created them... Potential reasons why.. If we share dna perhaps they want to infect us with all manner of things to be able to cure all manner of things a bit like a lab rat for the egineers. Or maybe we worship them because their technology was so far more advance, that appeared like magic ..thinking about clarkes 3rd law.. Or maybe it has absolutely nothing to do with us at all..maybe it's like a distraction they create us and the egineers/onlookers view us with curious eyes...meddling from occasion and steering our development'but the real reason is that some piracy went on with the sj's and our planet system..is the site of where they burried their treasure..

The difference of 33 000 years does not necessarily disprove my claim. As Kay suggests, we could have been lab rats from the beginning. The ceremonial suicide/birth of the Engineer in the opening scene could be in keeping with some custom that has since died out. The star-map leads the protagonists to LV-223, not the Engineer homeworld. This suggests that we were engineered in a similar fashion to the Xenomorph and after it was created, why not test is on us? The Engineers created us for the same reason we created David (an the other synthetics), "because [they] can".

Hadley's Hope. The robed figure at the start of the film is in exile, or similar fate, but is not part of group. He is a solitary "Prometheus" that creates human life. But then again, unless he did not die and their species lives for a very long time, there would have to be multiple figures that visited the many different civilizations. The long life-cycle supports my other argument. The more I think about it, however, your theory does seem to have more validity. Personally, though, I find it difficult to believe that there was nothing malevolent in our creation or creators. The creation of life is not portrayed in a good light during the movie. There, potentially, could be a duality in the Engineers. This notion of our creator's duality is expressed by W. Blake's poem 'The Tyger' (which, itself, contains allusions to Prometheus); "Did he who made the Lamb make thee": did God, who created all forgiving Jesus, create the brutal, efficiently killer, the tiger?

If we were farmed as hosts for xenos, then what sort of war was being waged elsewhere that could wait around 2,000 years for weapons to arrive?
