Meaning of Prometheus relates to religion

I'm not religious but i found the constant inclusion of faith a possible way this film could be interpreted. It is assumed that the Engineers are the creators of human life and are worshipped by ancient civilisations as the Gods as, realistically, they are. The creators of life, as we assume from the opening scene. The movie is based in 2091. When they test the dead body that was decapitated they say it has been there for approximately 2000 years. Approximately 2000 years earlier, Jesus was born and hailed as the son of God. As the real God of humankind, how would you feel if the species you created started praising and believing in a God that was not yourself? We know that the engineers were intending to head to Earth to kill mankind, maybe this was their way of teaching their creation a lesson for no longer believing? You have to remember that the engineers were planning to head to Earth 2000 years earlier, well before we had the technology to meet the engineers. The fable of Prometheus is that he took fire from Zeus (THE God) and gave it to humans. Perhaps our newfound faith insulted these Gods and Jesus, as Prometheus did, took what was Gods gift and gave it away and this was the engineers way of redemption. Just a cool way of possibly interpreting it.

Yes, much like the characters lose their faith in their engineers, I have lost my faith in sci-fi after watching this. Mission Accomplished.

I agree the idea about connection between the Jesus and Creators. The way Elizabeth Shaw born the face-huger (which embryo was putted inside of her body) reminds me on the virgin birth of Jesus, whose embryo could be putted inside Maria's body by "God". But the idea that SJs are creators I totally disagree, which is described in the thread

Interesting perspective. Perhaps the Engineers were truly gods, creating the big bang and planted the seeds of life on primordial Earth. But when the humans come up with their own gods, the Engineers took it very seriously and decided to eliminate mankind for their unbelief. It is very provocative.

@ KIRILL Excuse me.....i'm sorry....and don't intend to be rude....but what is all this about shaws embryo and immaculate conception?....of all the ambiguous intention and unanswered this and that were discovering in these threads...there are certain facts in this movie....ONE very big one being....Holloway had SEX with Shaw.....Holloway just happened to be infected with an Alien DNA or contamination at the time which contaminated his own spermic DNA which he passed ON to Shaw....and she became pregnant....other than the miracle of life....wheres the immaculate conception there....the film 'Knocked up' is a good reference. Otherwise liked the idea of even more religious connotation...

@shinobi thanks for ignoring the question....i've already mentioned about the miracle of life...in reference to SHAW not being able to produce any....firstly its probably not her embryo....its just growing in her womb....john hurt didn't have any embryos growing inside him either....secondly it doesn't have mummys eyes or daddys lips theres no sign of human inference....and thirdly again i ask what's it got to do with an immaculate conception??...SHAW had sex with HOLLOWAY and he PASSED on the infected GENES.....cmon guys..

I agree. The religious metaphors are all there. 2000 years ago we were at a bad state & needing redemption. This is when the Engineers were going to wipe us out. The story is set at Christmas time. Shaw's Cross. Constant references to sacrifice. The Engineer at the start of the film. Holloway sacrificing himself. Do you think those arms go up for no reason. Janek sacrificing himself & the Prometheus to save mankind. Loads of references made by David regarding creation & relation to their creators. The immaculate conception of the Trilobite (Alien). These are metaphors not actual religious events. They are intended to create a tone. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Clever stuff.
