Alien: Earth and Alien: Romulus sequel news

Where the hell are the thermonuclear warheads?

I have just emerged from the hot, gooey bath of the mind and soul that is Prometheus. What a magnificent piece of film making. All the mythological aspects aside, the technology itself was mind blowing. I pored over the Weyland site in detail to absorb everything I could about tech in the age of Prometheus. But one burning naked question remains. Where the hell are the thermonuclear warheads? If you are going to run a trillion dollar ship into deep space with a trillion watt fusion engine, you would figure a few nukes on board would be a good idea, in case of you know - hostile aliens. So then why does one have to kamikaze a trillion dollar spacecraft into an alien vessel when a single satellite guided nuke would have done the job? Sigh. I guess there was a need to not live a trace of the vessel intact for the inevitable visit by Nostromo, but there are other ways to do this than a pathetic, over blown suicide. I end my bitching and wait for the sequel. Please, please, please, watch this, rack up the cash, and convince the studio suits to fork out for a sequel before Mr. Scott gets too old!

Well i guess did we fit our Space Shuttle Missions and the International Space Station with Weapons.... You know in case ET comes along, i mean surely after Roswell etc... When Christopher Columbus set sail for the Americas i dont think his Ship was a War Class Ship that had Cannon after Cannon etc... So who knows...

Just a reminder that the ship kamikazed into by Prometheus in the move is not the one that will be found by Nostromo - that's already lying derelict on another planet. This, for me, but not for all, is an unfortunate aspect of the movie!

You would assume that the damage would be more and having a Nuculear Engined Craft would be like hitting something with 4 nukes... But maybe thats not the case, i am no rocket scientist so cant answer that... But i supose its a different process to when you set a nuke to detonate... I mean i dont think flying a plane into a Nuclear Powerplant would do the same kind of damage as dropping a nuke despite the Powerplant having more Nuclear Material... The only real threat would be from Radiation and not no Nuclear explotion etc...

I cannot express how much I loved how you dismissed, "all the mythological aspects", and then declared that what remains was, "magnificent", film-making with your major concern being the absence of some nuclear warheads. I enjoyed this very much. BTW, it's not the same planet that Nostromo goes to.

I don't think this model was designed to carry nuclear warheads. Maybe in the future Weyland Industries will design variations of the ship to utilize weaponry, but I'd think that nuclear weapons would be used by a larger space ship, and not a smaller ship like the Prometheus.....but then again I don't know.

I agree. It's very unlikely that we would travel so far without a self-defense capability more than a pistol or two... A trillion-dollar spacecraft should be able to defend itself, civilian or not.

Stupid plot - again. ALL the trip made for only one reason - weyland is old and hopes the engineers longer his life. He goes unweaponed and unprepared "hoping for good luck" with david to the engineer to ask in a hurry for eternal life. Haha - what did they expect? That the engineer says "...ohh... i was waiting 2000 years for you, sleeping here in this poo chamber. Nice to see you, here drink this medicine, get young again and then go home and enjoy your eternal life with 423 virgins...'" The whole movie seems to be produced in a hurry... everything so fast. In 3D in the scenes where things move fast you can not follow as these scenes fly around you in a snatch and are so fast gone. You will enjoy the action scenes even more in the 2D Trailers. Its a pity... Its not horrible as alien, its not an action movie like aliens - it tries to be an "epic" but i dont think it is. I think its designed simply as an "extended trailer" or "appetizer" for sequels. Oh how i hate this LOST strategy... So my conclusion is - you can really enjoy prometheus - but only if you are able to RAPE YOUR MIND...

Well nukes would be a bad idea as they would have destroyed the Prometheus at that range. But missiles with advanced targeting systems would have been a good idea. The ship could have carried a fairly large amount of them as we can, even now, outfit a predator drone to the teeth with missiles. The lack of foresight shown be all involved in this mission is pretty silly. One of the first things any person would think of is, "what if they are hostile".

I say we nuke the script from Orbit. That's the only way to be sure. (No bashing please, it's just for fun :)

@BigDave. You should check out Iron Sky if you haven't. It's pretty stupid but funny.

Well remember that this is a private company expedition. No government was involved, hence no warships. Imagine equipping private ships with thermonuclear weapons. So this was a private exploration research vessel, kinda like the ones we see in NatGeo and Discovery Channel. They went to this distant planet-moon with only 2 believers, the rest were just company staff. The mission was 2 fold, research and weyland's secret agenda. Even a company with a trillion dollars, prices and inflation would probably be higher in 2090, who knows. So this company must be pretty stable and most likely must also answer to shareholders. a Trillion dollars is expensive enough today, it might be reachable by a a company during that timeline. 1 Trillion Dollars is probably enough just to pay for the Trip, 30-40 something lightyears going plus another one going back, payment for the Crew and all the supply and high-tech research equipment they had. What was a bit cheesy though is that it's 2090 and the best they can get was a couple of flamethrowers and some pew pew handguns. Heck they could have brought in some Anti-Tank Rifles on board.
