The engeneer is not wearing a space suit so it would seem he does not plan on leaving. Instead I think he is sacrificing himself. He drinks from the cup willingly. The liquid in the cup has it's effects and as he falls into the water we see how the genetic material is broken down to it's most basic elements and spread. But what planet is it? Earth in Pre-history?

the event you speak of could have happened on any "earth-like" planet

I looked really hard for vegetation, but I didn't see any at all. No vegetation means no oxygen, no ozone layer for protection from the sun. This engineer could have been holding his breath. Regardless, I am more and more convinced that what we see is an event 1.3 Billion years in Earth's past when all we had was singular-cellular organisms. His DNA spurred the jump to multi-celular organisms as seen by rapid cellular reproduction making his "offering" essentially the RNA and enzymes required for cellular mitosis. This seems to predate the Cambrian explosion of 580 million years ago.

i really can't remember that what i do know is that the domes on lv 223 are designed to produce naturally breathing air inside. i think the first vegetation that produced oxygen on earth was underwatervegetation. the engineer breath soemthing, (my guess is same air as us though it could be something else) and else they use breathing masks as well. aha, when the engineer left crashed derelict and went to lifepod (or what is vickers private part called?) he was still with his face in open air. either they need different air, or they can breath a more multitude types of air. i got myself yet 1 more question :'(

Hi, Ridley has confirmed in an interview that this guy is sacrificing himself to see the world with his time-bomb DNA building blocks. What a guy! You owe him your allegiance! Melkor My review here!!!

But according to David "Sometimes you destroy in order to must-create"...Maybe they want to start (a new project of the genesis)...but they changed their minds for 2000 years...Maybe an Engineer loved the "humanity" and fight for their freedom (Jesus or Prometheus). Another thought is that the black goo is designed to accelerate the evolution...then maybe they wanted to change us and not destroy us. Here is an interesting interview where Ridley Scott says something about this: Your text to link here...

No vegetation does not necessarily mean no ogygen in the atmosphere. There are may places on earth where there is no vegetation, such as the polar icecaps.

yeah.. that opening sequence is one of the most mysterious bits of the movie: true it seems that it is the only way to plant seed on the planet: a transformation/destruction of an element that combined with a new element ( water ) transforms into something new. thats mainly what happens to the poor dudes on LV223: two are in transform/destruction stage bfore getting fried, one gets killed by a worm who look for a complementary element to change into something new, and @ the end we witness two succesfull transformations with Shaw "giving birth" and then the now classic vessel/facehuger combination in its first primitive form . it plants the whole mechanism of the engineers evolution/terraformation: one must destroy to create... Back to the opening my question is: is this engineer the real PROMETHEUS? Did he sacrifice himself to create life without the other engineers permission? is that why the only engineer left go on rampage when seeing the humans?

snailmaster - I don't think the sacrifice engineer is a rebel but I can't explain his motives. The last engineer was not attack instant. He was staring what wants the humans. He was attacking when David start to speak to him ordered by Wayland (if I remember something about the immortality).

Prometheus (Greek: Ðñïìçèåýò) is a Titan, culture hero, and trickster figure who in Greek mythology is credited with the creation of man from clay and the theft of fire for human use, an act that enabled progress and civilization. He is known for his intelligence, and as a champion of mankind. In the Western classical tradition, Prometheus became a figure who represented human striving, particularly the quest for scientific knowledge, and the risk of overreaching or unintended consequences. In particular, he was regarded in the Romantic era as embodying the lone genius whose efforts to improve human existence could also result in tragedy. Just a thought.

It could be that he attacked because he realised David was not human at all, but an android; an all-new creation made entirely by man. Because this mirrors what the first Engineer (Prometheus) did, in creating a new brand species in his own likeness, maybe he thought this was blasphemy? Maybe he was afraid? He was definitely angered.
