Likes about the movie:
Picture quality, crystal clear, I saw it at an IMAX 3d. I thought it was completely worth it, the 3d was cool but I noticed halfway through the movie I wasn't even noticing the 3d anymore, last half the movie might as well been entirely 2d. The "pop" scenes like when David activates the star map were brilliantly done and completely benefited from being in 3d. See it in IMAX if you can, its worth it.
Anything that I don't list as a nitpick about the movie means I liked it.
Nitpicks about the movie:
1. David's manipulation of the crew and his treachery, could have been written better, instead of wondering who was going to screw who over, it was almost immediately apparent that it'd David the Android. Potential for interesting plot twists wasted.
2. I really didn't like the squid/starfish alien thing they came up with, it lacked all of the mystery/creepiness of the original xenomorph.
3. The crew rushing into things like this is their very first field expedition. Especially when they have the mapping orbs. I just get tired of characters being written as morons. And also the weapons guy who's supposed to provide security for the team, lets make him useless as soon as we land on the planet.
4. While watching the movie I thought I understood the Prometheus reference. That the first Engineer's act that caused humanity to spring up on earth was illegal or forbidden. And that when the other Engineers found out about it, they were sending a ship to exterminate humanity since we are mistakes/abominations. So the first Engineer was Prometheus, and that his DNA is the fire that he stole from the other gods and sacrificed himself knowing that he'd be punished for it.
Instead, humanity is created, the first engineer dies for whatever reason, the other engineers know about us, they let our ancestors worship them for a few millenia, make carvings of them in the rock, and then decide we are to be wiped out for some unknown reason or no reason at all. I've always hated the "b/c they can" explanation which ultimately explains nothing.
5. WTF was up with the primitive xenomorph bursting its way out of the last Engineer at the end of the movie? What was the point of even showing that considering that when Alien takes place, its at a completely different place, on a completely different ship, fully loaded with facehuggers that create the xenomorph we've all come to love. They should have just left that out, it made no sense at all.
6. The lack of development at various points throughout the movie. As a result, I don't really care about any of the crew, the whole horror aspect gets shelved in the process. In a movie that is supposed to be bring up the fundamental issues for humanity, "Why are we here, who made us, why did they make us, what happens when we die...etc" The movie was remarkably void of any real reflection on this point with any of the characters. Other then the Captain not caring about it...and Shaw wanting to know why the Engineers are trying to wipe out humanity. The movie leaves a void where any of these philosophical issues could have been tackled in at least some form.
Conclusion:
Overall, I liked the movie. It was as good as I could have expected. I was immediately hooked when I heard the announcement for the movie, its premise and that Ridley Scott would be directing it. I don't know if this movie warrants any sequels, b/c for the most part Prometheus did succeed at getting it's message out there and concluding it. I personally hope we get to see more original movies such as Prometheus in the future. And yes, even though Prometheus is a rehash of Alien, I enjoyed it. I will probably see it a second time at least in the theater, although I will fore go the 3d version.
