The Black Goo

The black goo dubbed bioform reminds me a lot if not exactly of purity control i.e. the black oil from x-files. I think nobody knows what it's made up from. Probably some advanced bio nano tech stuff designed to alter matter in some way and possibly induce life into dead matter.

Simple....It's the engineers hair removal cream.

According to Ridley in a recent interview, the goo works wonders as toothpaste and viagra.

The black goo was one of the most interesting mysteries of the movie for me. The thought that kept running through my head is that it is like liquid chaos, or a catalyst of sorts. Its effects apparently cannot be predicted, but what we can glean from the film is that it changes organic matter. Mutates it maybe, or even evolves it in a very rapid time period. The various things we see emerge from interaction with the liquid are wide and varied, but I feel like we see an evolution in its forms over the course of the movie, or perhaps that's only as it leapfrogs from one organism to another. Anyway, all my speculations. I think we will learn a lot more about it in the next installment. On a side note, I also was thinking about the facility where the goo is kept. I keep thinking that it's not a military installation. It looks more like a temple, and the one room with the head, as one of the characters dubbed it, "a tomb." Perhaps the engineers saw the goo as a gift from their god, which would explain the ritualistic swallowing of the liquid at the beginning of the movie, and the giant "idol" head that seems to be watching over the canisters. Idk, just some more thoughts.

My thought is this black goo is Eitr that the Weyland industries site has under investor information- Earth resource Breakdown. This is one of the only mythical substance the others are admantine and couple more. Not too sure. But Eitr has the lowest resource reserve and the characteristics of what it does is similar. The word is North Germanic language is broadly translated: poisonous, evil, bad, angry, sinister etc. I think the black goo is intended to be put on absorbed through the skin rather ingested. That's why the space jockey died and Holloway was going to die anyway before vickers killed him with a flame thrower. Black goo changes worms into sinister snake like creatures and Fifield to a mindless, powerful being going against his own crew. Why would the space Jockey use this substance against us when it can cause mindless powerful life forms on Earth. Maybe, those urns turn into gas in the Earths atmosphere ingested through inhalation and kill every life form. But most likely probably drop into water and ingested by all life form.

I posted in another discussion about the green crystal in front of the Xeno mural. Maybe the goo and crystal are linked somehow? Did the crystal in front of the xeno mural contain the goo or xeno dna originally? Do the engineers regard the xeno's as a higher race and worship them? Would make sense of teh mural and crystal. Maybe they are trying to bring the xeno's race back alive and created us as hosts for this purpose? I like the idea of the big head guarding the tomb. That green crystal is call Kryptonite. Space Jockey/Engineers creator is Superman.

Anything mentioned in the Weyland industries website is actual fact in this alien universe and not in real life. You may see connection after watching this movie and going back to the website. Substances, planets, technology and medical, if this information is related cloning exist on another planet Gliese 876D: Wan An Outpost Established 2053. Maybe we see more of Weyland in the next movie.

Alright, boys and girls, you twisted up the whole story. You have to pay much attention to details....There was TWO DIFFERENT black liquid substances. [list=1] One is a goo, which comes from top of the vessels as the Head Room was opened and a lot of CO2 was breathed out in the air. This one leads to DNA mutation (worms). [/list] [list] The other one is held INSIDE glass Ampulas, which are inside vessels, surrounded by a transparent liquid. And this one produces octopus/face hugger. And in the end - a Xenomorph. @Belial81 In the opening scene, he did not ingest the black goo for "ritualistic" reasons. It was to break down his DNA to seed the planet with life. That is why he was left behind on earth. That is also why it was done in large body of water .

Reboot, how do you know it wasn't a cultural ritual? The figure was wearing robes and stripped down before ingesting something from a container with writing on it. It sure [i]looked[/i] like some kind of ritual. For all we know, that's how they [i]always[/i] seed planets, and ritual sacrifice is part of the Engineer culture. I think that's actually more likely than a one-off.

Liquid DNA maybe?

@Reboot - I'm actually in complete agreement with you about the end result of the engineer's actions. However, there is absolutely nothing to say that his actions are not ritualistic in nature. As artyoh stated, he's wearing robes, strips down and drinks a liquid that ultimately kills him (to seed a planet, sure). This sounds like self sacrifice to me, and could easily be part of the engineer's religion/culture. @camjones93 - liquid DNA is an interesting thought, but in the beginning of the movie, it shows the substance destroying the engineer's dna, and then reconstituting it in water. It appears that the substance destroys to create, which would be a strange thing for dna to do. Come to think of it, it doesn't necessarily hold up that the substance is a mutagen either, as that would simply mutate the dna, not destroy it. Thoughts?

The black goo is the sum of all the fans tears compiled into 1 source. Scott now ranks up there with Lucas and Spielberg for ruining great story lines and my childhood memories. Alien: The Crystal Skull <== new title or Alien: The Phantom Menace What junk!
